Ethics [Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 1st period]

Today's class was taking place in the Danger Shop where there wasn't a desk to be found: only a cloudless day, a beating sun and apparent kilometers of oceans surrounding five small dingies that were neatly labeled with four or five students' names, or in one case, four students and one lemur.

Anakin's voice came over the speaker system: "Welcome to your first practical Ethics class. You've all been shipwrecked. In a moment, the dingy you're in will be the only thing you will see. There is no land for hundreds of kilometers, no fresh water, and you've run out of food. The only resources you have are the other people--or in one case, the people and lemur--you have in the boat. Will you turn to cannibalism? If so, who will be the first to go?"

Hope you weren't hungry for breakfast, class.

"Again, if you'd prefer not to participate in this class, shake your head strongly and you will be taken out of the simulation."

With that the students were apparently left to their own devices.

Well usually stranded on a boat with a bunch of girls wouldn't be a problem for Luke. Of course now it was a bit of trouble considering cannibalism was on the line and he had to be a gentleman or something.

Actually, screw that, he didn't want to be eaten.

"I'm gonna take it using powers would be cheating on this thing." Because if it wasn't cheating food and getting off the island would be nooooo problem.

"How is it cheating," Rosella said, with a bit of an exasperated sigh, "to use the powers and resources afforded to you to save your life and the lives of the others with you?"

Another reason why she hated Ethics. It made people feel bad about doing things like, you know, living.

"Good point," Luke said before snapping his fingers and making a bottle of water appear in his hand. "But you don't get any because you're snippy."

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"If I'm snippy," said Rosella, barely keeping from sighing again, "it's because I think these exercises are a bit silly. Your not sharing the water with me will have no real world consequences, only hypothetical ones. If you don't share with me, it's not as if you'll have the weight of my eventual dehydration on your shoulders in actuality, which I trust is why you would keep me from having any. I should hope that, if this was a real situation, you would not deprive someone of comfort and life merely because of a snippish tone."

"That was a mighty long speech for someone who thinks these exercises are a bit silly," Luke told her, giving Rosella a smile. "You're right, if this was real I would probably give you water. Well, actually, I'd skip the Cast Away stuff and just get everybody off the boat 'cause nobody likes sunburn."

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Rosella snorted, failing a little to keep back a grin of her own. "I'm a princess," she informed him. "Long speeches are part of my birthright. But that just simply emphasizes my point that even a real life simulation won't be able to fully allow us to judge how we would act in a real life situation. So, now that it's been established that at least one of us has the ability to make all of the danger a moot point, I suggest we all relax and enjoy our little sailing excursion."

"If we are allowed to use our powers I can see if there is land anywhere in sight," Angelica offered hesitantly. "And give us a direction to try to go in at least. I really don't want to eat anyone. Or get eaten."

"I'm not so much into cannibalism either," Jocelyn agreed. "Powers are part of us. It'd be silly not to use them if they'll help."

"I can fly," Angelica said. That was the first time she'd outright admitted that, and she was never going to get over how much of a relief it was to be able to say it without people turning against her. "But, um, you might want to all move as far away as possible from me, just in case."

Not that there was much room in the dingy, but she didn't want to accidentally burn someone when she launched herself.

Shadowhunters weren't supposed to feel, well, jealous of anyone. They were the ones given the charge by the Angel Raziel, but the idea of being able to fly was such a cool one that Jocelyn almost felt that little bit of longing.

"I'm so torn between 'that's so awesome' and 'are you going to sink the boat?'" she admitted, grinning over at the other girl.

Re: Dingy 3

Angelica was very familiar with Emma's danger room, so she wasn't worried that she'd sink the boat and drown them all at least. "I think I'd flunk the class if I did that," she said with a nervous laugh. "I just need to superheat the air under me to make myself fly. I can isolate it so the air around you will be fine, but it's best to be careful I guess."

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] sedlexduralex.livejournal.com 2011-09-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no big then," Jocelyn decided. "I was picturing some type of equal-but-opposite cannon action thing."

Re: Dingy 3

"It might rock the boat a little," Angelica said thoughtfully. "But I shouldn't blast a hole in it." She hoped. "But I could, if I was trying to!"

That wasn't reassuring, Angelica.

"That power's pretty useful," Luke said. "It'll help here, at least, since I tend to get tired if I teleport too many people so I probably can't go too far."

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"You can teleport?" Angelica said. She was still impressed by the water bottle summoning. "Are you...are you a mutant?"

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no, nothing like that," he said. "My dad is a god and I inherited some stuff from him. That skill you have from being a mutant?"

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortunately Angelica was familiar with Thor -- by reputation only -- so the "god" admission didn't entirely throw her. Just a little bit. "Really?" she squeaked. "Wow! Greek? Norse?"

Pardon her while she geeked out. Fandom was so cool.

She nodded in answer to his question. "I can control microwave radiation," she said. "And I can use it to fly."

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Greek. My dad's Hermes," he said, smiling at the geeking out. "I can fly too--but only with winged shoes."

Since she seemed to be a mythology nerd he didn't feel the need to explain where those shoes came from.

"You're not just pulling my leg, are you?" Angelica had to ask. "I know there are people here from other worlds and from the past, but nobody mentioned gods."

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] sedlexduralex.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'd think it'd fall under 'all available resources," Jocelyn decided. "Otherwise the question doesn't make sense: 'if you were someone else, watch would you do?'"

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well since we're agreed that powers are okay then we can relax and get a tan," Luke said. "Even if I couldn't do what I can do, I don't think I'd eat anybody. Something tells me eating raw flesh would just make me sick and I don't need to be losing anymore fluids out here."

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] sedlexduralex.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"The blood would probably be nourishing, but the salt would..." she paused. "Okay, please pretend I did not just say that."

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke shook his head. "I'm not sure if I can, it was pretty gross. Might stick with me for a while."

Re: Dingy 3

[identity profile] sedlexduralex.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Jocelyn made a face. "I was thinking about how the Mongols would drink the blood of their horses for nourishment if they were on hard journey without enough supplies."

Because that made it better, yep.

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Better than people that drink blood for fun, I guess." He had come in contact with way too many of those lately.
