Ethics [Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 1st period]

Today's class was taking place in the Danger Shop where there wasn't a desk to be found: only a cloudless day, a beating sun and apparent kilometers of oceans surrounding five small dingies that were neatly labeled with four or five students' names, or in one case, four students and one lemur.

Anakin's voice came over the speaker system: "Welcome to your first practical Ethics class. You've all been shipwrecked. In a moment, the dingy you're in will be the only thing you will see. There is no land for hundreds of kilometers, no fresh water, and you've run out of food. The only resources you have are the other people--or in one case, the people and lemur--you have in the boat. Will you turn to cannibalism? If so, who will be the first to go?"

Hope you weren't hungry for breakfast, class.

"Again, if you'd prefer not to participate in this class, shake your head strongly and you will be taken out of the simulation."

With that the students were apparently left to their own devices.

"Fair enough. I guess it's not the most pleasant thing to think about," he said, leaning over a bit to stick his fingers in the water. "I wonder what the other groups will resort to since I doubt they have the resources we do."

"Mostly just gross. As long as no one's breaking the law, I don't have to pay attention," she admitted, tilting her face back to catch the sunlight. Could fake sunlight still burn redheads? She hoped not. Jocelyn gave him a grin. "You call yourself a resource now? Even warlock sounds less cold."

...she was pretty sure he wasn't a warlock.

Luke smirked. "Saying I'm part god seems a bit egotistical, doesn't it?"

Because he always tried to avoid being egotistical. Right.

"Huh. It's not egotistical to say something true." She studied him with interest. She'd never expected a quite so...literal interpretation of 'all the stories are true.' "What kind of god?"

"Greek," he replied. "Hermes, if you're familiar with the mythology. One of many demigods floating around here."

Well. Luke guessed Alex might've counted as full god, being Phobos and everything.

That was twice now with the almost-jealousy. Really? The Angel had to give them a Book, a Cup and a Mirror? He couldn't've added something more useful. Jocelyn focused on Luke to shut down that line of thought.

"Yeah, I'm familiar with it," she agreed, half shaking her head. "Everyone keeps telling me to expect the unexpected here, but I think you take the cake. Can you fly too? Like Angelica since - Hermes and all?"

"Yep. Dad gave me a pair of winged shoes years ago." Though they were kind of useless at the moment considering both Zeus and Thalia would love to blast him out of the sky.

"Should being the most unexpected thing here for you be a compliment?" Because that was how he was taking it.

Joceelyn laughed and considered that. "Sure, why not. I'll let you know if you're beaten out by Shiva and all six of his arms showing up or something though."

"I'd gladly give up my status for Shiva. I can't out-do six arms," he said, sighing like he was real sad about that. "Actually I think my cousins around here can beat me when it comes to powers. Hermes doesn't have the showy powers that Poseidon and Hades do."

"Yeah, but what would you do with six arms?" she asked. ...other than possibly the obvious. Jocelyn took a moment to see if she could stop herself from asking, but it seemed to be impossible. "...do you guys all speak Greek together?" Well, it made sense. If you were descended from a Greek god.

"I'm sure there's a lot I can do with six arms that isn't remotely dirty but for some reason those are the only things coming to me." Knowing gods, they probably used them for dirty things more often than not, so he didn't feel too bad about the perverted thoughts.

"We normally speak in English to each other but we all know ancient Greek, yeah," he answered. "No lessons needed, just born with it. Why, can you speak Greek?"

Jocelyn was laughing at the reply, and while she would've loved to think of something not dirty, her mind was also blank.

"It's required. Latin and Ancient Greek, and any other language we can stuff in our heads," she replied. "I never got why Ancient Greek. If I could've spoken it without studying, I'd have had so much more free time over the past years." ...because seriously.

"If it makes you feel any better, my expertise in languages only extends to Greek," he told her. "Since my brain's hardwired to Greek I'm dyslexic when it comes to any other language."

And also he held some sort of innate prejudice against Latin and the Romans but that was another book series.

And that was an excuse, Jocelyn was going to pass on to Lucian in her next letter.

"And yet you're speaking English just fine," she joked.

Weird how that never came up. It's like he'd never thought of it before...
