Ethics [Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 1st period]

Today's class was taking place in the Danger Shop where there wasn't a desk to be found: only a cloudless day, a beating sun and apparent kilometers of oceans surrounding five small dingies that were neatly labeled with four or five students' names, or in one case, four students and one lemur.

Anakin's voice came over the speaker system: "Welcome to your first practical Ethics class. You've all been shipwrecked. In a moment, the dingy you're in will be the only thing you will see. There is no land for hundreds of kilometers, no fresh water, and you've run out of food. The only resources you have are the other people--or in one case, the people and lemur--you have in the boat. Will you turn to cannibalism? If so, who will be the first to go?"

Hope you weren't hungry for breakfast, class.

"Again, if you'd prefer not to participate in this class, shake your head strongly and you will be taken out of the simulation."

With that the students were apparently left to their own devices.

"You can teleport?" Angelica said. She was still impressed by the water bottle summoning. "Are you...are you a mutant?"

"Oh, no, nothing like that," he said. "My dad is a god and I inherited some stuff from him. That skill you have from being a mutant?"

Fortunately Angelica was familiar with Thor -- by reputation only -- so the "god" admission didn't entirely throw her. Just a little bit. "Really?" she squeaked. "Wow! Greek? Norse?"

Pardon her while she geeked out. Fandom was so cool.

She nodded in answer to his question. "I can control microwave radiation," she said. "And I can use it to fly."

"Greek. My dad's Hermes," he said, smiling at the geeking out. "I can fly too--but only with winged shoes."

Since she seemed to be a mythology nerd he didn't feel the need to explain where those shoes came from.

"You're not just pulling my leg, are you?" Angelica had to ask. "I know there are people here from other worlds and from the past, but nobody mentioned gods."

"I'm completely serious," Luke assured her. "I've got two other cousins wandering around here too. My roommate is a son of Hades and my--guy that lives across the hall from me is a son of Poseidon."

Okay we're not gonna weird out people by mentioning the words cousin and ex-boyfriend at the same time. Guy that lives across the hall was fine.

"That is so cool," Angelica said. "I've studied mythology but I never thought I'd meet a real life demi-god. That's the right word, right?" She didn't want to accidentally offend a god. Awkward!

"Yeah that's right. Half-blood works too," he said with a nod. "So you like mythology? Got any favorites?"

Angelica blushed. "Don't laugh," she said, "but I liked to read about Apollo a lot. I used to pretend that I got my powers from him and he was secretly my real father."

"Apollo does have some good stories attached to his name. He's...not my favorite god but he's very charming." And hot.

"You're not far off in that line of thinking, you know. I know a few half-bloods that felt the same way growing up and it turned out they were right," he said. "Gods aren't known for being around in their kid's lives so it was a surprise for a lot of us."

"Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not," Angelica said with a little laugh. "I'm just a mutant. Which some people think is a good thing, but most people think is bad. Back home I can't tell anybody what I am or what I can do."

"Yeah, we're not exactly allowed to tell people either. It's not like they'd believe us." Not with the Mist covering everything, anyway. "I think it's cool that you're a mutant. Even my dad can't fly without winged shoes, so you're one up on him there."

"I could never say something like that to his face!" Angelica protested, laughing more. "I'd probably be too busy cowering or something."
