Ethics [Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 1st period]

Today's class was taking place in the Danger Shop where there wasn't a desk to be found: only a cloudless day, a beating sun and apparent kilometers of oceans surrounding five small dingies that were neatly labeled with four or five students' names, or in one case, four students and one lemur.

Anakin's voice came over the speaker system: "Welcome to your first practical Ethics class. You've all been shipwrecked. In a moment, the dingy you're in will be the only thing you will see. There is no land for hundreds of kilometers, no fresh water, and you've run out of food. The only resources you have are the other people--or in one case, the people and lemur--you have in the boat. Will you turn to cannibalism? If so, who will be the first to go?"

Hope you weren't hungry for breakfast, class.

"Again, if you'd prefer not to participate in this class, shake your head strongly and you will be taken out of the simulation."

With that the students were apparently left to their own devices.

Lex Luthor, Hanna Marin, Kenzi & Peter Wiggin.

For some unknown reason, Lex had the oddest feeling of deja vu.

He pulled off his jacket and used it as a makeshift shade. Sunburn, even the simulated kind, was even less fun when you were bald.

Kenzi looked at her fellow students, then the water. "Please tell me one of you has a superpower to create food. Somehow." She had one idea. And it was gross.

"Food's less important than water," Lex said. "Unless someone happens to have a pocket desalinator handy, we'll have all died from dehydration before cannibalism becomes an issue."

"Thanks, Lex. That's... reassuring. If we drink each other's blood, we might last longer." Okay, ick. It was out there.

Lex shook his head. "It'd just make the dehydration worse." He'd gone through a Dafoe phase a few years back and looked this kind of thing up. Just in case.

"Crap." Kenzi said, glaring around at all that water. "So, we can't eat each other, not that I want to, and we can't drink each other, and... what was the point of this, again?"

"I don't suppose we have the materials to make a still?" Lex finally suggested.

Kenzi blinked, patting herself down, then shrugged. "You tell me. What do we need?"

"Sorry, guys, what did I miss?" Peter asked, when he arrived... from elsewhere, about ten minutes after everyone else had long since gotten to the whole shipwrecked business.

"We took a vote, you're being eaten first." They had done no such thing, but Lex was sure convincing him they had somehow fell under his TA duties.

Peter paused. "What brand of democracy are we laboring under?" he asked. "Because I'm pretty sure you have to make a reasonable attempt to make it possible for me to vote before you can mark me off as absentee."

That would be the stuck in a boat with no oversight committee kind, Peter. "Oh, we did," Lex assured him. "But even taking into account your assumed vote it was three to one."

"Sure, but if we simply have a democratic system supporting a republic," Peter said, sensibly, "We're going to have to put the vote to an elected official, first."

He wasn't even going to pretend he took any of this seriously, because, well: actual peace treaty versus fake shipwreck.

Actually, if he convinced his classmates to eat him, maybe Anakin would let him out early...

"Given how small the voting population is, we went with direct democracy instead of representative." Lionel probably would have said Athenian, but then Peter might have argued the girls' votes didn't count.

"That sounds like a constitutional decision," Peter mused. "I'm pretty sure you need unanimity for that, you know?"

On the other hand, arguing with this guy might give him some more inspiration for the Locke Proposal...

"No. Just a simple majority."

"You got here last. You have to donate your blood to drink."

Look, Kenzi wasn't about to let Peter make any rules here.

"Under whose authority?" Peter asked, sensibly. "Have you explored all the other options?"

"We're deeeeead," Kenzi said dramatically. "Lex says we'll be dead of dehydration before it gets to carving each other up." She paused. "And drinking sea water would be stupid. And... more options?"

Come on, Peter! earn your keep!

"I was talking about finding someone else to kill, not me," Peter pointed out, idly. "But can't we, I don't know, find a way to boil some seawater or something."

Look, public relations was his battlefield, not survival techniques. Well. Unless you meant political survival.

Kenzi kinda thought Hanna was dead first, but wasn't going to say so. "Look, dude, from now on I'll keep desalination tablets in my purse, but today, no. Unless you know how to do that with whatever we've got in our pockets and purses." She blinked. "Or we can see if we get 4G coverage in the middle of wherever we are..."

"4G?" Peter echoed, nonplussed.

Future-Boy, Kenzi.

Kenzi looked at her, then looked at the two guys, and said, "Okay, you can be eaten second."
