Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Well, this was definitely something different. Not the rain - Alistair had only just spent three weeks around Lothering, now they knew rain - but the everything else. The food! The people! The signs! ...The food!

He wasn't wriggling like a puppy or anything (he was a big, strong Grey Warden representative), but he was thinking very hard about the moral quandary of whether he should stick around to talk to students and his 'teaching buddy', or run off and eat all the food.

... Or maybe gape some more. Was that a pink pony?

A pink pony with balloons on her ass flank, even.

Pinkie noticed the gaping and waved a front hoof cheerfully at him.

Everypony here was so friendly!

...And now... the pink pony... was waving at him.

"Helloooo...?" Alistair drawled.

"Hi!" Pinkie answered cheerfully. "I'm Pinkie Pie! Are you a new teacher here, too?"

"Yesss," Alistair said slowly. "Yes... I... am."

Please excuse his mind for a moment. It was rebooting. "And... so are you."

Pinkie was entirely unphased by the apparent brain breaking in front of her. "Yup! I'm going to teach the students all about how to throw the best parties! What do you teach?"

"...if you're another Prestor John, I'm calling shenanigans," Deadpool informed the newbie. Neeeeewbieeeeee.

"Prestor who?" Alistair asked, nonplussed. "I mean, I can't rule out shenanigans, obviously, but my name is Alistair, and I'm not with... whatever organisation uses 'prestor' as a title."

Also, what the hell was this man wearing? Alistair tilted his head a little.

"I dunno, but he liked tryin' to make my brains a fine paste because of his morality and faith and I can't remember because he's not in any books anymore."

"I tried the faith thing," Alistair said, philosophically, "But I'm not really the type, as it turns around. Too much sitting around in temples, too little making brainpaste, I suppose."

"And that is what's wrong with the world today," Deadpool insisted. "And why priests are the butt of unfortunate jokes about alterboys."

A beat.

"Wait, reverse the order of that."

"Alistair?" Dick asked, walking up. The guy just looked like an Alistair. It was either this guy or the horse. "Welcome to Fandom."

"Last time I checked," Alistair agreed, "Of course, that was ten years ago, so that's not a guarantee. But thank you. You're... Dick, I take it?"

He was not going to giggle snicker.

"That's the joy of nametags. You can check quickly," Dick said. Sure enough, he checked his nametag. "And yes, I'm Dick. I can say that with confidence now."

"Oh, now I know," Alistair said. "Silly me, I thought those were just for decoration, or maybe naming the tables. Hello, Dick. I'm Alistair, of the Grey Wardens, and I am here to fill young minds with knowledge." He shrugged. "Theoretically, anyway."

"With an introduction like that, I have to ask what kind of knowledge you plan on giving them," Dick said. He liked this guy. There weren't enough non-psychotic smartasses around here.

...Was that armor?

That looked like armor.

This place just kept getting more and more surreal. But pretty! And that was the important thing.

"You're looking a little shellshocked," Cindy observed dryly. "Did you just finish talking to our VP?"

She hadn't seen the pony yet.

"...Oh, please don't tell me the pony is the... whatever you just said," Alistair said, blinking at the (pretty) newcomer. "Because now I'm paranoid I haven't been treating my horse right."

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] steel-not-glass.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"The pony?" Cindy glances around the throng until she saw...yes, that was indeed a pink pony chatting with the Dean. She blinked once or twice at that and fought down the irrational urge to call Red and make sure that no one from the Farm had joined her at Fandom--not that anyone besides Bigby knew she was here.

"Uhhh, no," she said, turning back to Alistair. "She's new. The VP is the bizarre man in red with the swords who refuses to make sense."

Extending her hand, she added, "I'm Cindy. Cindy Perrault. Around here, though, making sense is kind of relative."

"Ahhh, him," Alistair said, glancing Deadpool's way. "He's all right. In an incredibly crazy sort of way, but it's more 'dance, dance, you peon, and watch the daggers!' than 'I whisper inanities into your ear while I touch you in bad places', so I'll take it."

He smiled, glanced down at Cindy's hand, and wondered if this is where he did the handkissing... thing. She was a lady, after all. Maybe she expected that kind of thing? "I'm Alistair, of the Grey Wardens," he offered. "Do you want me to, uh..."

... That was probably a stupid question.

"Yeah, actually that first one sounds pretty much like something he'd say," Cindy said. She smiled at his evident confusion, reaching to take his hand and give it a shake--even though for a moment she gave serious thought to letting him kiss it. It reminded her of old times.

"A handshake is the modern equivalent," she explained with a smile. "You'll get fewer funny looks this way."

A talking pink pony was fascinating on one level of Jane's interest; a young man filling out his armour was fascinating on a completely different level of it. She took the fact that he was gaping to her advantage to make a few purely scientific, of course, observations before she decided it would almost be rude of her to not go over and introduce herself.

"Pardon me, sir," she said with a bit of a smile and wishing she'd brought a fan rather than the parasol that the weather had demanded, "but you appear to be quite new, and so I thought I'd come on over and introduce myself. Miss Jane Porter. Instructor of biological science and primatology, mostly." She dropped the slightest of a ladylike curtsey. "I trust the picnic is finding you well?"

For a brief second, Alistair almost thought she was Isolde, but no. Isolde would have sneered at him more than a bit. "Biological science," Alistair echoed. "Ooookay. I mean, hi. I'm Alistair. I'm... finding myself very well at this picnic."

[identity profile] bootlessjane.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Wonderful!" Jane, clearly, was pleased by this news and took it as a good reason to keep beaming happily at the poor fellow. "It's always good to see new contributions to our faculty. Tell me, Mr. Alistair, on which subject will you be imparting knowledge to these impressionable young minds?"

"The avoidance of misadventure," Alistair provided. "As in... not dying horribly. By preparing up front, I heard there's another class about not dying that's more... in the moment."
