Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"'How to avoid misadventure'," Alistair said, making it sound nice and big and dramatic. "Because Andraste knows I know a few things about that."

"Actually, that might prove remarkably useful to the students here..." Dick said. "Congratulations, you ended up at a school where your knowledge will come in very handy."

"I'm... not sure whether that's a good thing or not," he admitted. "At least it doesn't sound boring..."

"It's a good thing," Dick promised. "If it wasn't, I would have left after the last session ended."

"Good to know," Alistair said. "I spent eight years in a Temple once, you know. Promised myself I wouldn't be wasting any more time being useless after that." He glanced across the picnic. "So you're here to get me situated, am I getting that right?"

"Pretty much, yeah. Anything in particular you need?" Dick asked.

"It'd be nice to know what this is, besides a horribly inefficient weapon?" Alistair asked, holding up the (closed) umbrella he'd been given.

"You'd be surprised how good a weapon it can be," Dick said. Damn you, Penguin. "It's an umbrella. You open it up and hold it over your head to keep the rain off of you."

"Ohhhh, well, that's handy," Alistair said, and reached down to-- "...How does it open?"

"It depends on what kind of umbrella it is," Dick said. "But usually it's just pushing a little piece of plastic until the fabric extends...."

And then he pointed out how to do it on whatever kind of umbrella Alistair had in. Nice and easy!

The umbrella jumped open. "Okay," he said, "That is neat. What part of Thedas have I wandered into, anyway? Or is this some spooooky other dimension?"

There had been a portal. He'd been suspicious.

"If it helps, I don't think it's all that spooky," Dick said. "But I've never heard of Thedas, so I'm guessing it's another dimension. The planet is Earth, the nation is America. Nominally."

You know, to account for being next to Atlantis.

"And it's nominally because...?"

Like Alistair would be able to tell Atlantis from Maryland.

"The island's been moving all summer," Dick said. "Throughout space and time on Earth. But the causeway still leads back to America in the present day."

"Riiight, so lots of mages here, basically."

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] exboywonder.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's probably the simplest way of explaining it to you, sure," Dick said. "The island is pretty magical, and there are a lot of people with special abilities."

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] badnewsandwit.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"So it's like one big tower of Magi." Now that sounded more like the Chantry. Alistair sighed. "Right. Well, I do have another question for you. I have... no idea where I'm expected to sleep. Do we camp out in the woods, or are there rooms at the castle...?"

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] exboywonder.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"The castle is actually the school," Dick said. "And you probably could camp out if you wanted, but the apartment building I live in has some openings. But that's only if you want to sleep indoors on a bed."

[identity profile] badnewsandwit.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Awww, but then I'd miss the romance of lying out in the rain in the mud with all the bugs and the wolves and the grass slinking into my breeches," Alistair said. "I suppose if I must..."

[identity profile] exboywonder.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"In fairness, we have very few wolves here," Dick said. "But MHA still comes out on top over camping somehow."

[identity profile] badnewsandwit.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Em-ache-ah," Alistair said, testing out the sounds. "I suppose it might be a tolerable alternative to camping."

"I'll show you the way after the picnic so you can get settled in," Dick said.
