With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yesss," Alistair said slowly. "Yes... I... am."

Please excuse his mind for a moment. It was rebooting. "And... so are you."

Pinkie was entirely unphased by the apparent brain breaking in front of her. "Yup! I'm going to teach the students all about how to throw the best parties! What do you teach?"

"I'm... teaching how to avoid misadventure," Alistair replied. "But considering that I'm standing in the soaking rain speaking to a pony, I'm starting to doubt whether I'm the best choice for the position. No offense." Beat. "Ah well, I suppose it's more hopeful than being dead... I think."

"Oh, I hate missing an adventure!" Pinkie was not always entirely clear on the concept, no. "And being dead would definitely mean missing adventures all the time. Oooo, but maybe you'd be going on one big huge adventure."

Oh dear, the pony was starting to get philosophical. This could only end in tears.

"Oh, yes," Alistair said. He was speaking to a pink pony. He felt he was allowed a bit of going along with the madness. "I bet when you die, dragons swoop down and lift you up into the skies, and there we'll all run about waving swords around and having a merry adventurous time being dead."

"Dragons swooping sounds way more fun than dragons snoring. We met a snoring dragon once and I tried to cheer him up when he got all cranky 'cause we had to wake him up or he would have turned the sky dark for a hundred years if he kept going and he was so mean. He didn't like to laugh. Can you believe that? Who doesn't like to laugh? Oh, but my friend Spike is a baby dragon, and he doesn't do any swooping at all. Just eats gems and breathes fire. Do you know any dragons? I bet they don't like it when you wave swords at them. That doesn't sound very nice at all."

Yeah, she could keep this up for hours.

"I don't know any dragons personally," Alistair offered, "But I've heard tales of them. One tried to eat one of my friends once, but the sword-waving got in the way. Such a pity."

"Ooo, I hate it when they do that. One tried to eat my friends, once, but Fluttershy yelled at it."

"Yelling scares off dragons?" Alistair said. "Clearly, I need to pass that on."

"Well, Fluttershy's very good with animals. It's her special talent. But she was pretty amazing when she told the dragon off. It was all 'HOW DARE YOU?!' and then she made it cry."

"...Is she a pony too, by any chance?" Alistair asked. "Just curious!"

"Of course, silly! She's a pegasus."

...Yeah, okay. "A what?"

Sorry. He'd be wittier later, when he pasted his brain back together.

"A pegasus. You know, ponies with wings? Grew up in Cloudsdale? Help make the weather? Oh, but take it from me, never try to eat their rainbows. Those things are spiiiiicyyyyy."

"Andraste's flaming sword," Alistair sighed. "I'm still drinking, aren't I? No, wait, I'm still on the ground back by Lothering, sleeping off my hangover. That must be it."

"You don't seem to have any punch or anything," Pinkie observed. "So I don't think you're drinking right now."
