Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

A talking pink pony was fascinating on one level of Jane's interest; a young man filling out his armour was fascinating on a completely different level of it. She took the fact that he was gaping to her advantage to make a few purely scientific, of course, observations before she decided it would almost be rude of her to not go over and introduce herself.

"Pardon me, sir," she said with a bit of a smile and wishing she'd brought a fan rather than the parasol that the weather had demanded, "but you appear to be quite new, and so I thought I'd come on over and introduce myself. Miss Jane Porter. Instructor of biological science and primatology, mostly." She dropped the slightest of a ladylike curtsey. "I trust the picnic is finding you well?"

For a brief second, Alistair almost thought she was Isolde, but no. Isolde would have sneered at him more than a bit. "Biological science," Alistair echoed. "Ooookay. I mean, hi. I'm Alistair. I'm... finding myself very well at this picnic."

"Wonderful!" Jane, clearly, was pleased by this news and took it as a good reason to keep beaming happily at the poor fellow. "It's always good to see new contributions to our faculty. Tell me, Mr. Alistair, on which subject will you be imparting knowledge to these impressionable young minds?"

"The avoidance of misadventure," Alistair provided. "As in... not dying horribly. By preparing up front, I heard there's another class about not dying that's more... in the moment."

"Oh, yes!" Jane positively beamed in acknowledgement. "Mr. Skywalker's class. Though, I must admit, if I may, that my own class was quite a bit of dabbling in making sure to avoid an untimely and miserable sort of death. African exploration! Plenty of ways to die horribly there; I should know, I've been there many times myself! Naturally, preparation is certainly the best way to avoid such a fate, too. All those bugs and diseases and dangerous animals and tricky terrain!"

Really, she should way too excited for someone talking about gruesome death.

Wow, she was all kinds of epically cheerful, wasn't she? "That sounds like a bad camping trip," Alistair volunteered. "I think I've had a few of those myself."
