//I missed my shift last week,// Jono replied, as though that explained everything. When you were Jono, maybe it kind of did. //Figured I ought to make up for at least a little bit of lost time today.//

The attempt at surly was... an interesting look, really, for her. Please, pardon him for taking this moment to try not to laugh. He was fortunate that he didn't know many gingers, really. Placing who the not-so-surly bloke standing before him was was made significantly easier that way.

"Not that I needed a lot of proof in the first place," said Ariel, her surliness slipping all too easily into a grin that should be pretty familiar regardless of gender, "but you are officially a nerd."

The way she leaned forward a little on the desk was distinctly her, as well, leaning on her elbows and looking at Jono critically.

"How come you're not a girl?" she asked.

//Because I am th'very essence of masculinity,// Jono managed to say, with a more or less straight face. //Turning me into a gel would break th'very fabric of time and space, and so Fandom Island decided it would be for th' best to leave me as I am.//

In other news, Jono was completely full of gobshite.

And, really, there was only one response to that:

"Pppppffffffth."

Followed by a faint sigh, because there was no bangs blowing up off her face when she did that right now.

Yep. This was Jono. This was Jono laughing. Which Fandom would certainly get back at him for, sooner or later. It was a quiet laugh, because he was still in the habit of not projecting after a week of playing mute, but it was stil absolutely there, what with the way his shoulders were shaking and he couldn't quite knock that smile from his eyes.

//Fandom's been kind to me in regards to this particular sort of strangeness, I've noticed,// he offered. //It does make up for it in other ways, mind. I'll take th'little breaks where I can get them.//

"See," said Ariel, smirking at him and his laughing and glad to see that being a boy didn't take away from her obvious charms. "Now that just makes me wonder if it's trying to be extra mean to me because I would be curious to see what you'd look like as a girl. I'll bet your hair would be gorgeous."

Not that it wasn't already, but if it were long...

She could also be projecting her own sadness at shortened hair. Her neck felt cold, so thank goodness for scarves.

//Mmm, yes. And in everything. There's a reason I chop it short when it gets about as far as my shoulders, you know.//

Because when he wasn't wearing his wrappings, it tended to tousle about a bit. And when your hair liked to stand almost vertical when tousled about by psionic flame, it only stood to reason that you were going to get it tangled up on something, somewhere down the road.

//I really don't think I'd wear femininity well, honestly.//

"Of course you wouldn't think that," Ariel reasoned. "I think you would, though, and my opinion matters more because I'd be the one having to look at you."

Infallible logic, that.

//... There's a flaw in that reasoning, somewhere in there,// Jono replied, squinting a bit. //Give me a minute, and I'll be able to pick it out for you, ma-... luv.//

Mate. Luv. Maybe he'd just call everybody sunshine today and be done with it.

And Ariel would never be opposed to Sunshine.

"I'll be patient," Ariel offered kindly. "Maybe I can go check out some music while you think on it; I could probably get through a whole decade of records while you do."

//Singing along would be quite the experience for you today, wouldn't it?//

The things that Jono thought of...

//You could record yerself today, and then add to it when you change back, and be yer own duet.//

Ariel's still blue eyes widened.

"Jono!" she gushed. "That's brilliant! Ohmygosh, that would be so weird, I love it! Ohmygosh, we have to think of a really, really good song for it, too; can't let that go to waste."

//For a duet with yerself?//

Jono, don't be a complete berk and suggest what you want to suggest...

//'Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better.'//

There he went, suggesting it. Because, come on, it would be absolutely hilarious.

But that was Mister Deadpool and Master Skywalker's song!

That didn't seem to stop Ariel, though, from barking out a laugh.

"I love it! Only we have to give the better part to me when I'm back to normal, because girls are better, Jono, it's just true."

//I think th'gel's part is the one that does better, in the end.//

Jono knew his show tunes, thank you. Please, try not to think too hard on that fact.

//And you'll forgive me for not being heartbroken that I've missed out on the opportunity to be a member of th'superior gender for th'day.//

"Better luck next time?" Ariel offered with a smirk and a shrug. "And you can say you're not heartbroken all you want; that doesn't mean I'm really going to believe it, you know."

//Well, I'll have to try harder to convince you, then.// Jono shrugged. //Perhaps I would be easier to believe if I said that I was thankful that I didn't have to wake up to figure out how to wrap myself from nose to navel when I'm a completely different shape than usual, instead?//

Because that would be slightly awkward, with or without breasts.

"I don't know," said Ariel, eying Jono dubiously and very specifically in the face because picturing his scenario too vividly seemed to only be a path lined with trouble. "It could be interesting.

//... There's one word for it, I suppose.// Jono was now eyeing Ariel right back. //Are you just sore that the island left me alone, and not you?//

Because, really, Fandom did not want to suffer Jono's inevitable shriek if he woke up as a girl. It would give headaches in a terrible way.

And would probably still sound completely masculine.

Ariel's nose wrinkled slightly.

"Being a boy is strange."

That was all she was going to admit to. She was not going to go into any details at all. Partially because she didn't feel she'd need to and partially because there was the added factor of how having legs in the first place was still fairly new to her, much less having something constantly in between them.

//I'm sure there are worse things to be,// Jono replied, shrugging. Yes, he could imagine what line of thought her current logic was following. No, he really didn't want to elaborate on it, either. //Or, at least, stranger.//

He'd been quite alright with being a boy his entire life. Being on fire, however, was a different matter entirely.

//I'd tell you that you'll get used to it, but that would be assuming you were stuck that way long enough to have to. This sort of thing usually wears of before long.//

It made her feel like she may as well have stuck with the tail...

"It does? That's good, then. I'm sure I'd get used to it, like you said, but, yeah. Not only that, but I miss my hair. If it weren't for everyone else dealing with the same thing..."

Pause.

"Mostly everyone else dealing with the same thing," she corrected, "I'd be worried."

//Hair grows,// Jono offered. Because that was hugely helpful, right? //At this rate, I'm going to begin to feel almost left out.//

No, not really.

And she'd gotten all those cute dresses yesterday, too...

"We could get you a nice wig," Ariel offered with a grin, "maybe some mascara..."

//Mm, yes. And we can stuff a bra and I can stick that on, too.//

No. He wasn't going to. And his raised eyebrow hopefully conveyed as much.

//Long hair and eye makeup are only going to leave me looking like more of a goth than I already do, at any rate.//
