Library, [11/17]

Okay, so Jono was a little late getting himself into the library today for his shift, what with having to travel back from Vail and all, but he showed up as soon as possible, considering.

So soon, in fact, that he still had his bag of laundry and his guitar with him, both of which were sitting behind the desk while he set to work, re-shelving books and silently, very silently, chuckling to himself.

Once again, it looked as though he'd gotten off easy today, didn't it?

I fully admit that the reason Jono didn't change is because he's a picky, picky jerkface when it comes to PBs, and Penelope would have been too easy.

... And too colourful.

Faramir had not been so lucky, but he had been reading the Dr. Seuss book for two weeks now thanks to having to stay out of the library because he lost a bet with his brother. Faramir simply needed a new book and to be honest, now that he had modern clothes (jeans and a blouse) which did not swim about him, he did not feel like hiding.

"Hullo, Jonothon," he greeted, placing the book on the desk. "It seems that Fandom must like you better than the rest of us."

"You did not seriously go to work right after a vacation," Ariel said, arms crossing over her flatter than usual chest as she looked at Jono and tried to look surly over the fact that he was still his usual self although she was currently not.

But, really, by now, she'd gotten a bit more used to the idea and, so long as things went back, she figured it was a heck of a experience.

//Mmm, I don't think like has much t'do with it. It gave me one hell of a rotten summer,// Jono noted, raising his eyebrow at... He'd get it in a moment, just give him time. //Faramir?//

When in doubt, use that sixth sense that he hated having to see what it was that his eyes couldn't quite place.

//I missed my shift last week,// Jono replied, as though that explained everything. When you were Jono, maybe it kind of did. //Figured I ought to make up for at least a little bit of lost time today.//

The attempt at surly was... an interesting look, really, for her. Please, pardon him for taking this moment to try not to laugh. He was fortunate that he didn't know many gingers, really. Placing who the not-so-surly bloke standing before him was was made significantly easier that way.

"Not that I needed a lot of proof in the first place," said Ariel, her surliness slipping all too easily into a grin that should be pretty familiar regardless of gender, "but you are officially a nerd."

The way she leaned forward a little on the desk was distinctly her, as well, leaning on her elbows and looking at Jono critically.

"How come you're not a girl?" she asked.

//Because I am th'very essence of masculinity,// Jono managed to say, with a more or less straight face. //Turning me into a gel would break th'very fabric of time and space, and so Fandom Island decided it would be for th' best to leave me as I am.//

In other news, Jono was completely full of gobshite.

And, really, there was only one response to that:

"Pppppffffffth."

Followed by a faint sigh, because there was no bangs blowing up off her face when she did that right now.

Yep. This was Jono. This was Jono laughing. Which Fandom would certainly get back at him for, sooner or later. It was a quiet laugh, because he was still in the habit of not projecting after a week of playing mute, but it was stil absolutely there, what with the way his shoulders were shaking and he couldn't quite knock that smile from his eyes.

//Fandom's been kind to me in regards to this particular sort of strangeness, I've noticed,// he offered. //It does make up for it in other ways, mind. I'll take th'little breaks where I can get them.//

Rosalind, who looked utterly normal and was glad for it, stopped in the doorway of the library and arched an eyebrow as she took in the scene.

"I'm impressed," she announced, as she made her way over to the desk. "You're working."

Was he surprised that that was her reaction?

"See," said Ariel, smirking at him and his laughing and glad to see that being a boy didn't take away from her obvious charms. "Now that just makes me wonder if it's trying to be extra mean to me because I would be curious to see what you'd look like as a girl. I'll bet your hair would be gorgeous."

Not that it wasn't already, but if it were long...

She could also be projecting her own sadness at shortened hair. Her neck felt cold, so thank goodness for scarves.

After getting back into town, Sherlock made a beeline for the library to find out more about this... this... this.

"Gender alterations," he demanded, stopping at the counter.

Not at all!

//And yer a gel!// Jono made the important observations today! Really! //Welcome to th'normal club, luv.//

... You know. Relatively normal.

She shook her head, mildly amused at that. "It seems to be a rare 'club' today," Rosalind replied.

//Mmm, yes. And in everything. There's a reason I chop it short when it gets about as far as my shoulders, you know.//

Because when he wasn't wearing his wrappings, it tended to tousle about a bit. And when your hair liked to stand almost vertical when tousled about by psionic flame, it only stood to reason that you were going to get it tangled up on something, somewhere down the road.

//I really don't think I'd wear femininity well, honestly.//

... Please hold, Sherlock. Jono didn't take long at all to figure out just who you were, not wiht an attitude like that one.

He was laughing at you. And might remain laughing forever.

//Right,// he replied, once he'd regained his wits. //Would you like information on them in theory, or a history of all th'times it's happened on the island in the past?//

//It's one that I think I'll stay in, so long as I can. I can't imagine I'd make a very good female, really.//

No boobs, for a start. No chest for boobs to sit on.

"Of course you wouldn't think that," Ariel reasoned. "I think you would, though, and my opinion matters more because I'd be the one having to look at you."

Infallible logic, that.

Sherlock tapped far too slender fingers on the counter as he waited for it to pass. "So it has happened."

A beat.

"Why haven't you changed?"

"The island being what it is," she said dryly, "is it wise to say such a thing so loud?"

Was he attempting to give the island ideas?

//... There's a flaw in that reasoning, somewhere in there,// Jono replied, squinting a bit. //Give me a minute, and I'll be able to pick it out for you, ma-... luv.//

Mate. Luv. Maybe he'd just call everybody sunshine today and be done with it.

//I'm under no illusions about the island, trust me,// Jono replied. //It'll get back at me somewhere down th'road for even thinking it. It always does. If nothing else, I suppose it keeps me on my toes.//

And made him miserable, generally.
