Library, [11/17]

Okay, so Jono was a little late getting himself into the library today for his shift, what with having to travel back from Vail and all, but he showed up as soon as possible, considering.

So soon, in fact, that he still had his bag of laundry and his guitar with him, both of which were sitting behind the desk while he set to work, re-shelving books and silently, very silently, chuckling to himself.

Once again, it looked as though he'd gotten off easy today, didn't it?

"Mmm, good point," Ariel allowed. "We'll have to get you a pretty dress, then, too."

//That couldn't possibly end well. Dresses and leather wrappings don't generally go along with one another, luv.//

And he'd already made his stance on skirts clear at the glee club meeting!

Please, like that meant anything to Ariel.

"Not to a closed mind, perhaps! I swear, so stuck in a rut. There are so many things to explore; how can you be sure unless you gave it a try?"

//... I don't deal with drafts well?//

Now he was officially just trying entirely too hard. And he knew it.

He wouldn't be Jono if he didn't. It was why Ariel liked him as much as she did; he was a challenge.

"And you'll never deal with them well at all with that attitude."

//It's a matter of attitude now, is it?// Jono raised his eyebrows a bit at that, yes. //Lord, if somebody had told me sooner, I might've taken to running around topless in a pair of cutoff jeans.//

... Which would be a terrifying sight.

"I've got a pair," of course you did, Ariel, "if you want to borrow them."

And now Jono needed to take a moment, to kind of stare at Ariel with wide eyes.

//Trust me, luv. You don't want to see me in nothing but cutoffs.//

"You leave me to decide what I would or wouldn't want to see," Ariel said mischievously.

Of course, she might have been just saying that because she knew this was definitely not something Jono was likely to actually budge on.

And if it happened that he did? All the more fun.

Fun for people who did not mind the burning! So much burning!

//Really, you'd be surprised,// Jono replied, trying to keep his tone totally casual. Yep, compleeeeetely casual, that was Jonothon. And not kind of freaking out. Not even a little bit.

Honest.

The kind of casual that would not at all result in Ariel just looking at Jono with suspiciously raised eyebrows, right?

And here was Jono's best attempt at a completely casual fidget, right here. Wasn't it impressive?

//That one time, at th'campfire, that you saw me without these wrappings on? That was... a bit of a temporary thing,// he hedged. Totally casually.

The most casual ever.

There was a slight pause, those blue eyes probably doing nothing to help with any fidgeting that was not going on.

"Well, obviously it was," Ariel said carefully, "considering you started wearing them again..."

But, yeah, she was getting the idea that maybe it wasn't as simple as personal preference and being a stubborn mollusk about wearing them.

//They're bandages, luv. It isn't exactly a fashion statement.//

Oh, to hell with it. The fidgeting wasn't happening anymore, because he'd now crammed his hands into his jacket pockets, where fidgeting would at least not be so obvious.

Ariel blinked a few times, before her eyes started to wander back over the bandages. To be honest, she'd never really thought much about them at all, except as a fashion statement.

"You mean...?"

//You just... don't want me taking them off, luv. Trust me.//

My, but his toes were fascinating right about then.

See, and the thing with toes was that they were connected to feet, which Ariel now knew could fit so well in your mouth.

"You know I'm just teasing with you, right?" she asked with the hint of what she hoped might be a balm of a smile. "I'm...I'm sorry, Jono."

She wasn't, however, going to throw out the excuse that she didn't know, because it didn't matter.

It didn't. Because he understood well enough, anyhow. And she hadn't meant any harm, and she wasn't running for the door. All of which were nice, really.

//You didn't know,// he replied, throwing the excuse out for her. //And I didn't say anything, for all th'time we've known one another. I suppose if I've kept you in th'dark about it for this long, that means I've been doing something right, at least.//

And it wasn't like he was the only one not saying anything about things for all the time they've known each other. Ariel felt a slight pang of guilt for that one, but not enough that she felt like turning this into a whole session of opening up about secrets and everything.

"Yeah, if it's an consolation," she offered, "it totally looks just like a fashion statement. One that works, too. I can't think of anyone else on this whole island that can pull off leather bandages like you can, Jono."

//Well, I imagine they'd have troubles breathing if they tried,// Jono noted. //Or speaking. Wearing them is one thing, surviving them would probably be a completely different matter entirely.//

Which just totally made Jono hardcore, didn't it?

You know. For a guy with no innards.

Details, schmetails.

"Which I guess," said Ariel with a ne'er-do-well shrug, "just proves how much more awesome than all of those other people you are."

//Flattery will get you everywhere, Sunshine,// Jono replied, with a wink for good measure. //In any case, people around here have been... fairly good about it, when they find out.//

It probably helped that when Jono's flames came out, it was generally a matter of life and death, and he was using them to keep people from being eaten by nasty undead things, and such.

Just a hunch.

That might have had a little to do it, but Ariel was going to place her money on Jono's winning, cheerful personality.

She smiled happily now that they were back on a more comfortable footing that matched her stride and said brightly, "They do seem really good about things in general. I mean, here's a day when most of us are completely different genders and there was only minute screaming this morning, you know?"

//Mm, yes. I only had a little headache by th'time all of th'blokes were finished shrieking with female lungs,// he mused.

... The girls, meanwhile, had seemed to take it comparatively well. Mostly. Kind of. Maybe they were just less painful to listen to.

//I think Fandom is just starting to dull us all to the exceptionally weird.//

"It is a fair point to say that, with everything that does go around here, certain things don't really seem as big of a deal," said Ariel, completely ignoring how this could possibly apply to her at all.
