Okay, so Jono was a little late getting himself into the library today for his shift, what with having to travel back from Vail and all, but he showed up as soon as possible, considering.

So soon, in fact, that he still had his bag of laundry and his guitar with him, both of which were sitting behind the desk while he set to work, re-shelving books and silently, very silently, chuckling to himself.

Once again, it looked as though he'd gotten off easy today, didn't it?

Ariel blinked a few times, before her eyes started to wander back over the bandages. To be honest, she'd never really thought much about them at all, except as a fashion statement.

"You mean...?"

//You just... don't want me taking them off, luv. Trust me.//

My, but his toes were fascinating right about then.

See, and the thing with toes was that they were connected to feet, which Ariel now knew could fit so well in your mouth.

"You know I'm just teasing with you, right?" she asked with the hint of what she hoped might be a balm of a smile. "I'm...I'm sorry, Jono."

She wasn't, however, going to throw out the excuse that she didn't know, because it didn't matter.

It didn't. Because he understood well enough, anyhow. And she hadn't meant any harm, and she wasn't running for the door. All of which were nice, really.

//You didn't know,// he replied, throwing the excuse out for her. //And I didn't say anything, for all th'time we've known one another. I suppose if I've kept you in th'dark about it for this long, that means I've been doing something right, at least.//

And it wasn't like he was the only one not saying anything about things for all the time they've known each other. Ariel felt a slight pang of guilt for that one, but not enough that she felt like turning this into a whole session of opening up about secrets and everything.

"Yeah, if it's an consolation," she offered, "it totally looks just like a fashion statement. One that works, too. I can't think of anyone else on this whole island that can pull off leather bandages like you can, Jono."

//Well, I imagine they'd have troubles breathing if they tried,// Jono noted. //Or speaking. Wearing them is one thing, surviving them would probably be a completely different matter entirely.//

Which just totally made Jono hardcore, didn't it?

You know. For a guy with no innards.

Details, schmetails.

"Which I guess," said Ariel with a ne'er-do-well shrug, "just proves how much more awesome than all of those other people you are."

//Flattery will get you everywhere, Sunshine,// Jono replied, with a wink for good measure. //In any case, people around here have been... fairly good about it, when they find out.//

It probably helped that when Jono's flames came out, it was generally a matter of life and death, and he was using them to keep people from being eaten by nasty undead things, and such.

Just a hunch.

That might have had a little to do it, but Ariel was going to place her money on Jono's winning, cheerful personality.

She smiled happily now that they were back on a more comfortable footing that matched her stride and said brightly, "They do seem really good about things in general. I mean, here's a day when most of us are completely different genders and there was only minute screaming this morning, you know?"

//Mm, yes. I only had a little headache by th'time all of th'blokes were finished shrieking with female lungs,// he mused.

... The girls, meanwhile, had seemed to take it comparatively well. Mostly. Kind of. Maybe they were just less painful to listen to.

//I think Fandom is just starting to dull us all to the exceptionally weird.//

"It is a fair point to say that, with everything that does go around here, certain things don't really seem as big of a deal," said Ariel, completely ignoring how this could possibly apply to her at all.

Hey, it had taken Jono over a year to get to where he was now. And he was still half petrified to just tell people flat-out that he was a mutant. Even while guys like Kurt were running around with blue fur and so on.

//I suppose it doesn't make much sense to spend all yer time worrying about th'little things, when there are things from time to time that sit waiting around corners with an easy meal in mind.//

Oh, Kurt and his blue fur...

Shh. Ariel might have had a thing...

"Or randomly distributed gender switches..."

//Or chocolate rain.//

Chocolate, Fandom had taught Jono, was bad on leathers.

"Ooh! Or very nice unicorns and not-so-nice onions!"

And, yes, that inspired a giggle, or as close as Ariel could get.

//I still don't regret lighting those onions on fire,// Jono grumped, managing to survive Ariel's giggle with his sanity more or less intact. They'd been asking for it.

"And I'm still going to go ahead and pretend that you didn't light it on fire," said Ariel, "and be convinced that you were really just trying to cook it and failed miserably."

//Well, I wasn't going to eat it,// Jono noted. Because he couldn't eat it. Which was something that the bloody onion had been mocking him about, for that matter. //If it can talk to me, it's probably not for eating.//

"Hey," said Ariel, holding up a finger, "I'm supposed to the one randomly pulling out logic to debunk things you say."

Which, of course, meant he won this time.

Jono was going to savour this victory. He didn't win often, after all.

//Maybe next time, Sunshine. I'll try not to lord this over you too much, in th'future.//

"Those onions are going to probably be my downfall every time, aren't they?"

She still thought it was mean of him to burn them. And she usually liked burning things, too.

"Although, really, if you wouldn't eat them because they talked, doesn't it seem off that you'd still burn one slowly to death?"

They'd been saying nasty things to his roommate. He could tolerate what they had to say to him, but when they started picking on George, that had been a bit of a snapping point.

//Quickly to death,// he corrected, because that made all of the different. //You could... call it a bit of a flash-fire.//

From his face. He'd snapped. It was a miracle the dorms were still standing, really.

"...Yeah, definitely going to be my downfall every time," Ariel sighed. "I can just tell."

//At least I didn't pull out a kitchen knife and slowly chop them to death like th'radio was saying other people had done,// Jono offered. Because clearly, reducing them to cinders in seconds flat had been the kinder, more humane option.

"You have a point there," Ariel allowed.

Paused.

"I just threw mine out the window, so..."
