Ethics [Thursday, November 4, 1st period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest, the ring on his left hand gleaming in the light, and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

This...was a short lecture and, for that, Jonas was thankful. Still, he felt his heart pang uncomfortably at the word 'love' and had to duck his head and try to calm himself down.

Listening to the lecture, Katchoo punctuated it with several very loud snorts.

Maron's eyes just got bigger and bigger as she listened to the lecture.

What?

Angela decided she could never be a Jedi. It wasn't the love thing that got her. No, it was the fact that there were a lot of people deserving of hatred out there. Or if not hatred, at least severe dislike that looked like hated. And anger. It was the only thing some people would understand, okay?

Raven might have been tempted just a liiiiiiiittle to call Anakin on his attitude about love, because she'd seen him when he talked about Rory and Juliet. But she would never contradict him in front of the class. Nor would she roll her eyes. But she just may have given him a eyebrow and a bitch, please, I've seen you with the baby pictures look.

Tara thought the Jedi were pretty much insane, but she had to admit that - if she tried to be logical -- she could see their point. They just went about it all ... catawampus.

"You can't stop someone from feeling," Kyle insisted, a little more into this than most discussions. "It's what makes us human. Or people," he added as an afterthought when he realized not everyone on the island was human. His tone got more heated. "They were probably trying to do what any order does, desensitize its soldiers so emotions won't cloud judgment. But expecting anyone to give their emotions up entirely, instead of choosing how to react in spite of them, is wrong." If he knew how to spell wrong he probably would have done so aloud right then.

"Love can make you do some pretty stupid s- uh, stuff," Bobby shrugged. "I guess they figured it was easier than teaching people how to deal with their feelings."

"You can stop someone," Jonas said, voice sounding half bitter and half sad. Thinking back, he wondered if anyone felt anything in the Community. Everything was prearrange, done for you so there was no opportunity for feeling. "If you stop someone from feeling, you prevent possible major disruptions to the balance of your community."

"You can't stop someone," she said, frowning. "Hearts don't do that--they don't care if it's an awful idea to love someone or if it'd be better to love someone else in whatever situation. Your mind might care, but what you feel..."

Maron shrugged.

"I think love can be as potent a weapon as it can be a weakness."

"Within the Temple," Raven said quietly, "where life is more controlled, it would be easier to suppress emotions and teach others to do the same. But outside the walls, that is not a realistic expectation."

Raven didn't have any similar experience at all, nope.

Hayley raised her hand.

"How can all your family have kids if they don't love people?" she asked. "Well, I mean, I guess that happens, but if you're all a bunch of deadbeats then you're not as nice as I thought. Jedi don't go around just knocking poor unsuspectin' ladies up, right?"

"Doesn't matter how much you try to repress an impulse. It's still there," Emma replied scathingly. "You can lie to yourself all you want, but eventually that much repression is going to turn on its owner."

Or be used against them by an unscrupulous telepath. Details.

"I think they were trying to stop people from -- abusing power, kind of?" Tara tried, feeling like she didn't have the words quite right. "It's like with magic. If your emotions are involved, if you do things differently because of how you feel ... it's easier to go bad."

"But," she added, "I don't know if, um, if people can keep from falling in love."

Re: Answer the questions [11/4]

[identity profile] thismaskiwear.livejournal.com 2009-11-05 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's stupid," Katchoo said bluntly with a pointed glance at Anakin's left hand, "and either they figured that out eventually or just decided they didn't care any more."

Oh god. She couldn't unsee it.

"You can't stop someone from falling in love. Asking them to deny that's the most cruel thing you could do. And denying anger or hatred -- that's bull. Some people," and could she ever name a few if she really wanted to, which she didn't, "sure as hell deserve that."

"It seems completely unreasonable to act as though someone can go through their whole life without being angry. Even the kindest, holiest of people can become angry if provoked, and rightfully so," Morgana said. "As for love...I assume you're speaking of romantic love. If someone were to go through their whole lives without meeting their true love, then I suppose it might be possible to live a life free of that feeling. But you cannot stop that person from loving their companions, in a more friendly way."

"Love makes everything complicated," Francine said slowly, not looking at anyone in particular in that way that people who are terrible at not looking at anyone in particular when they're talking about someone in particular do. "But it's worth it. Without feelings, what's the point of even being alive?"

"They were trying to secure your loyalty," Elena said firmly. "If you love someone, you might place their wants and desires above your orders. Or even their safety. If you care for someone outside the system, you become harder to control. It's a variable they'd rather not have in play."

Raven was there, just a little twitchy about the topic of the lecture. If she had been paranoid, she might begin to suspect Anakin choose his topics after talking to her earlier in the week.
