Ethics [Thursday, November 4, 1st period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest, the ring on his left hand gleaming in the light, and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"It's stupid," Katchoo said bluntly with a pointed glance at Anakin's left hand, "and either they figured that out eventually or just decided they didn't care any more."

Oh god. She couldn't unsee it.

"You can't stop someone from falling in love. Asking them to deny that's the most cruel thing you could do. And denying anger or hatred -- that's bull. Some people," and could she ever name a few if she really wanted to, which she didn't, "sure as hell deserve that."

Katchoo wasn't a bunny anymore. That would explain why Raven was so suddenly very uncomfortable, particularly when the subject was love.

Katchoo shot a quick glance in Raven's direction and narrowed her eyes slightly, but shook her head. It was a reluctant and possibly deliberately vague way of saying she knew it wasn't Raven's fault, but yeah, she was still pissed.

Oh, Raven was very much aware of the anger. It would be giving her a headache if her shields had been relaxed.

She made a small nod. If Katchoo had more to say to her, she knew where to find her.

Anakin's right hand reached out to caress his ring. "No one has ever accused me of being the best example of a Jedi."

"Least you admit it," she answered with grudging approval -- as if he needed her approval. "It's a stupid, delusional expectation nobody should be expected to go along with."

"It worked effectively for several hundred years," Anakin countered. "Being a Jedi wasn't supposed to be easy."

"And maybe it came back to bite you all in the ass," Katchoo drawled, leaning back in her chair. "That's a hell of a lot of dysfunction to build up over a few hundred years. Sexual frustration doesn't look good on anybody."

Anakin pursed his lips. He was reminding himself that he was a teacher and no one needed to be inflicted with mental images of Yoda being not sexually frustrated.

...or he didn't need the images, since no one else knew Yoda.

"That wasn't what bit us," he declared.

"I'm thinkin' it sure as hell didn't help much," Katchoo replied. "What, are you just supposed to be a void? No positive emotions, no negative ones? What the hell does that leave? What's supposed to frikkin' drive you to do anything at all?"

"Duty," Anakin said. "Justice. A higher calling than just what would make one person happy."

There was a reason Anakin wasn't generally a part of the recruitment teams.
