Ethics [Thursday, November 4, 1st period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest, the ring on his left hand gleaming in the light, and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

Hayley raised her hand.

"How can all your family have kids if they don't love people?" she asked. "Well, I mean, I guess that happens, but if you're all a bunch of deadbeats then you're not as nice as I thought. Jedi don't go around just knocking poor unsuspectin' ladies up, right?"

"Of course we don't," Anakin replied to the last question icily.

"Well, I dunno, just seemed like it'd be hard to keep up a marriage if ya never got to hug your wife," Hayley remarked, still smiling and oblivious to any sour reaction.

Which was soon going to take a truly amazing level of obliviousness because Anakin was starting to have the look that would make Padawans cry. "They didn't know I had a wife," he said, "and I didn't see her often."

Hayley suddenly felt quite, quite small.

"...I thought you still had one," she said, her voice tiny and hushed.

"Second wife," Anakin said shortly. "Padmé died."

And with that he turned on his heel and stalked away.

"...that's awful," Hayley said, sniffling a bit as she cried softly.
