Ethics [Thursday, November 4, 1st period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest, the ring on his left hand gleaming in the light, and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"You can't stop someone," she said, frowning. "Hearts don't do that--they don't care if it's an awful idea to love someone or if it'd be better to love someone else in whatever situation. Your mind might care, but what you feel..."

Maron shrugged.

"I think love can be as potent a weapon as it can be a weakness."

"How many ways can hate be a weapon?" Maron countered, tilting her head at him. "Love can match its opposite. Love can make you harder to predict, if your enemy does not understand the depth of it. Love can drive you past your limits to save someone you care about. Love can push your ingenuity to new heights to solve a problem that needs to be solved. I think that makes it a weapon."

"Fear can make you stupid," she said quietly. "So can hate. Why should love be any different? It doesn't mean that the emotion itself is a bad one--it's a glorious one."

She tilted her head at him. "Like what?"

"How do you put shackles on your heart?" Maron asked softly.

"I don't think that would stop you from love," Maron said honestly. "I think that would only make someone a liar for not being honest with themselves."

"I don't remember saying that it wasn't," Maron half-asked, frowning slightly. "Only that I do not think love needs shackles. Some things may not, cannot happen--but why not give them a chance? If you cut it off before it ever tries, then you don't know what you could have accomplished with the feeling."
