Ethics [Thursday, November 4, 1st period]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred...or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest, the ring on his left hand gleaming in the light, and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"At a high cost," Elena said, very gently. "What happens when someone discovers feelings, entirely on their own? Are they shamed into denying it?"

"It's only happened once," he said after a moment's quiet. That he knew of, at least. He was certain, though, that if it had happened before him, those people would have been Released. "And no, there's no shame. There's a lot of things but shame isn't one of them."

"So how do they react?" she asked. "Do they insist the person stop feeling at once, try to convince them it's better not to?"

"It's---" He struggled with how to word something this terrible without making it sound terrible. "It hasn't happened before, that I know of. People can feel, they just don't know how to feel different things because they don't know what it is. They don't have the capacity."
