BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

Meanwhile, the other chaperons, one very large and muscly and bald, and the other very small and hairy and hamster-like, were looking over a road map.

"Boo," Minsc was telling his hamster, "I think that is a river, not a road. But okay, okay! You're the navigator here, and I must trust your instincts."

He patted the hamster proudly before turning his attention to the new shiny students.

"WELCOME," he boomed, "WELCOME, WELCOME! Fandom Shuttle! One and all! Plenty of room, no need to shove!"

"Dude, your hamster can read?"

Eric was willing to believe that.

If that was the case, then Eric and Minsc were going to get along great!

He chuckled at the boy's question. "But of course he can! He is a miniature giant space hamster, after all! Reading is just the beginning of his knowledge, youngling newbie!"

"Huh? How did you get a hamster from space?" Eric asked.

"Very carefully!" joked Minsc with a laugh.

"But, seriously, he was given to me as spoils for a fight! Or maybe I won him in a gamble. Or mayb--" He shook his head. "Well, Boo and I have been together for so long, it appears that I can barely remember!"

Anakin blinked and shook his head. "We can drive on the river," he said. "Boo's right, it's a good short cut."

Minsc nodded amiably. "Well, of course he's right," said Minsc. "It's Boo! And I can see what you mean now by the short cut, although I do like a nice rambling adventure, Sir Anakin."

Hayley just sort of stared.

"...you seem awfully big, mister."

Minsc really couldn't help chuckling.

"I more than just seem big, little lady!" he bellowed happily, feeling quite proud of his hugeness. "I am big! Name's Minsc! Me and Sir Anakin and Boo here are going to take the lot of you up to the school!"

To be honest, Hayley was a little scared of the guy.

And, really, no one should blame her for that.

Minsc hardly needed more prompting than that to whip out his hamster, presenting him to the little lady. "Yes, Boo!" he announced with the pride of a father. "My brave and close companion! Say hello to the nice little lady, Boo!"

"You don't need to shout," Azula said, glowering. "You have sufficiently caught everyone's attention with your... appearance."

"But shouting," shouted Minsc, "is fun! But I appreciate you noticing my appearance, little lady! But it is kind of hard to miss!"

There was a slight pause, where you could almost hear brain gear shifting, and then Minsc bellowed, "Welcome to the shuttle!"

"You said that already," Azula said acidly, finding it hard to rein in her annoyance. "A blind Earth bender would notice you without even trying."

"Well, then I am doing my job properly!" Minsc informed her, his brightness seeming to find absolutely no sign of any annoyance it might be causing. She did remind him a little of Xan, though, just with less talk about death and futility. "I would't want anyone missing the shuttle on account of being blind or bending earth, would you?"

Clark's mind had been blown from here to Australia and then there was a teacher talking to a hamster.

"You're sure your pet knows the way?"

Minsc's eyebrows lifted, looking at the boy with something like surprise. "Pet?" he asked. "Boo here is no mere pet! A man would have to be something pretty special to think he could make a pet out of a miniature giant space hamster, my good sir!"

"Miniature giant space hamster?" Clark found he was repeating an awful lot of what other people said this morning. "I'm sorry, this is the shuttle to Fandom High?"

"Indeed it is, my good sir!" Minsc assured him with gusto, including another bold sweep of his arm toward the fine vessel. "Step right up and aboard, ye mateys, and we shall start our adventure to the school very shortly!"

Well, he was certainly enthusiastic. Summer couldn't help but smile at that. She might have stared a little at Boo. She thought the hamster was cute, okay?

"Does he have a good sense of direction?" She asked, gesturing to the hamster.

That hamster was adorable.

"I've never actually met a miniature giant space hamster before," Summer admitted, somewhat amused by the encounter.

"Well then!" said Minsc with a laugh, happy to hear such things so that he could have the opportunity to introduce her to one. "Allow me! Boo!" He held out the little hamster. "Meet the nice lady! Nice lady! This is Boo! Now you've met one!"
