Library [08/19]

Instead of his usual plain morning coffee, Sam had gotten the biggest, sweetest coffee concoction that the Perk had to offer, and then headed to the library. If he was going to try to live in the land of denial about how close they were to the end of summer, he was going to need a sugar high on which to cruise.

Instead of cleaning the physical library today, Sam focused on cleaning the main computer so he could stay up at the front desk. He couldn't remember the last time he'd checked for viruses, and he wasn't sure what he'd find.

Raven stopped by in the morning as she had promised, eager and somewhat nervous to discuss demons from Sam's world. "Good morning, Sam," she said as she arrived, then paused and frowned slightly, sensing sadness and an unwillingness to confront it. She didn't wish to pry, however, so she did not ask about its cause, for the moment at least.

"Hey, good morning," Sam replied, pushing himself away from the computer. "It's good to see you."

"Is now a good time?" Raven asked. "I do not wish to disturb you if you are busy."

"Oh, yeah, now's a great time. I'm just killing time, I'm not doing anything that important," he assured her. "You still want to talk about demons?"

Raven nodded. "Yes. I am very interested to see if they are like those of my world," she said. "And perhaps I may learn something of how to deal with them."

"Is there anything you want to know in particular?" Sam asked. "I could probably talk about them for days if I had to."

"What form do they commonly take?" Raven asked. "How are you able to identify them? What are their powers? How are you able to imprison or destroy them?" She ducked her head and blushed a little. "I have many questions, as you can see."

"Questions are never a bad thing, really," Sam said. "Our demons take the form of the people they're possessing. If they're not possessing anyone, they just look like black mist. It's easier to get around that way, but it also limits what they can do. Once they've possessed someone, they're super strong and capable of telekinesis. You can imprison them with a devil's trap - it's a circular symbol and if you draw it on the floor or the ceiling, the demon can't move outside of it, or use any of their powers. As for destroying them, you can't, not really. All you can do is exorcise them and send them back to hell."

"What does this devil's trap look like?" Raven had to ask as she wondered if such a thing would trap her as well. She didn't want to find out, so it was best to avoid them if she could. "I do not know of a similar thing on my world."

"It might not work if your demons are different, but..." Sam trailed off for a moment and grabbed a piece of paper, sketching out a rough example of the trap. "The symbols aren't quite right. I don't have them all memorized by heart yet, but you can get the basic idea."

Raven took note of the shapes so that she could try to avoid such a thing if she could help it. "The demons of my world are different," she said, nodding. "There is one I know of that is hundreds of feet tall, with red skin and antlers like a deer and two sets of eyes, though he is capable of assuming a human form." As he had done for her mother years ago. "He has destroyed entire planets and conquered hundreds of dimensions. He would be akin to your world's Lucifer, I think. He controls other demons, but they are not as powerful as he."

"We have demons that are more powerful than others too," Sam said, thinking of Yellow Eyes and how much more damage he could do if he had the power to destroy an entire planet. "But as far as I know, they all have to possess people to have a human form."

Despite Diana's negative reaction, Claire decided to head over to the library before work and look for some books on gardening.

Sam peered up from the computer and grinned when he saw Claire. "Hey, what's up?" he said.

"Hi, Sam," Claire said, wandering over to the desk. "I was hoping there might be some books on gardening."

"Regular gardening?" he asked. "Not like, gardening in space? Gardening on planets with no water? Gardening in times of no TV?" He got a lot of weird search requests.

Obviously. Claire was a bit taken aback. "Yes, regular gardening," she finally said. "Rose mentioned that other-me was growing tomatoes and, I don't know, it made me curious."

"Are you thinking about taking up vegetable gardening?" Sam asked, looking it up on the computer to see where the books would be here. "That would be useful to all the people who love to cook."

"Maybe," she said. "I haven't really decided. Just thought it was something I'd look into."

"Well, if you want to find books, that's what I'm here for," Sam said. "Someday, I'm going to have the whole place memorized."

"Almost everything," Sam said. "Plants aren't a section I go to often though." He came around from behind the counter to lead her to the right section. "It's good that you're getting something good out of what happened to other-you."

Claire shrugged and followed him to the correct section. "I was up on the roof the other night and noticed the garden up there. Got me thinking."

Which reminded her. "So, what's this I hear about you and Chuck and a kilt?"

Sam almost stopped walking, but he recovered with little more than a stumble. "What do you mean? He has a kilt?" he asked, trying to be smooth.
