Instead of his usual plain morning coffee, Sam had gotten the biggest, sweetest coffee concoction that the Perk had to offer, and then headed to the library. If he was going to try to live in the land of denial about how close they were to the end of summer, he was going to need a sugar high on which to cruise.

"Not as much as they do," Sam admitted. "I want to find the demon that killed my mother, but that's personal. Taking down every evil spirit around for the rest of my life? That's not what I want, not like Dean does."

"It is not a healthy way to live a life," Raven said softly, nodding. "Helping others is a noble cause, but if the cost is your own happiness and peace of mind, it is not worth it."

"That's exactly how I feel!" Sam said. "There's loads of other ways I could help people safely. I just have to figure out which one I want to do."

"The freedom to choose my own path is one of the reasons I came here," Raven said. "I hope that you are able to do so for yourself."

"Thank you," Raven said. "I truly hope my father does not come to attempt to claim me. What he wishes for me goes against everything I believe in."

"I hope he doesn't either," Sam said. "I think it's really cool that you can use your gifts for healing, to turn them into something good like that."

"My father would have me use the fears and pains of man against them," Raven said. "But on Azarath I was trained to reverse that power and take such ills into myself and banish them, or replace them with hope or peace or something else pleasant. I would like to believe that everyone I help makes up in some small part for what Trigon has done. It does leave me somewhat vulnerable to the emotions of others, but I have been learning to deal better with that, and it is worth the risk to defy my father."

"Sometimes, what fathers want isn't what's best for us," Sam said solemnly. "Definitely not, in your case. I think you're right about how your healing balances things out. At least, that's how I see it too."

"If you have ever have need of my gifts, please, tell me," Raven offered shyly. She had liked Sam upon first meeting him, so it was a relief now to know he was not a threat to her.

"I will, although I hope I won't need them. I like staying healthy on my own," Sam said. He could hope, at least.
