Library [08/19]

Instead of his usual plain morning coffee, Sam had gotten the biggest, sweetest coffee concoction that the Perk had to offer, and then headed to the library. If he was going to try to live in the land of denial about how close they were to the end of summer, he was going to need a sugar high on which to cruise.

Obviously. Claire was a bit taken aback. "Yes, regular gardening," she finally said. "Rose mentioned that other-me was growing tomatoes and, I don't know, it made me curious."

"Are you thinking about taking up vegetable gardening?" Sam asked, looking it up on the computer to see where the books would be here. "That would be useful to all the people who love to cook."

"Maybe," she said. "I haven't really decided. Just thought it was something I'd look into."

"Well, if you want to find books, that's what I'm here for," Sam said. "Someday, I'm going to have the whole place memorized."

"You mean you don't already?" Claire teased.

"Almost everything," Sam said. "Plants aren't a section I go to often though." He came around from behind the counter to lead her to the right section. "It's good that you're getting something good out of what happened to other-you."

Claire shrugged and followed him to the correct section. "I was up on the roof the other night and noticed the garden up there. Got me thinking."

Which reminded her. "So, what's this I hear about you and Chuck and a kilt?"

Sam almost stopped walking, but he recovered with little more than a stumble. "What do you mean? He has a kilt?" he asked, trying to be smooth.

"That's what he said," Claire told him. "And he said that you seemed to enjoy it."

"Oh, you mean the kilt he wore to class," Sam said lightly. "Yeah, it was funny 'cause he lost a bet."

Claire smirked. "Uh huh, sure."

"What? It's true. He lost a bet to Hannibal, so he had to wear a kilt to class in front of everyone," Sam babbled.

"And you checked him out."

The whole pretending not to remember and the babbling were pretty good clues about that.

"I didn't--" Sam started, before sighing. "Kilts are really interesting, that's all."

"Chuck is pretty hot," Claire said.

"Peter's hotter," Sam said in an instant.

"Well, yeah," Claire said, as if there was no question about that.

Which may not have been what Sam wanted to hear from his boyfriend's niece, but oh well.

She glanced at the shelves they stopped in front of and pulled a book (http://www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Gardening-Editors-Readers-Digest/dp/0762102764/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250726303&sr=1-9) from the shelf at random.

"Ooh, how colorful," Sam said, smiling. "That seems like a good beginner's guide."

Claire flipped through some of the pages before nodding her agreement.

"Yeah, it does. I think I'll take it out."

"Do you promise to bring it back on time?" Sam asked. "I'm a stickler for late fees."

God, he was such a nerd.

He really was. But he was a cute nerd and Peter loved him and that went a long way in Claire's book.

"I'll do my best," she promised. "Besides, I think I have an in with one of the library aides."

Sam laughed as he took the book to check her out. "Yeah, you just might."

Claire grinned and followed him back to the desk. "I'll try not to take advantage of that."

"If you're going to take advantage of me, I should at least get a bribe out of it," he said. "I take all forms of caffeine."

"I'll keep that in mind, Sam," Claire promised.
