Since the area with all the informational signs was bound to get a bit clogged up, even more tables and chairs had been set up on the lawn, in a slightly different spot.

Gabrielle found herself a spot at a table and helped herself to a good pile of something that she thought was nutbread but turned out to be banana nut bread instead -- which was fine with her.

Spreading out a scroll on the table in front of her, she pulled out a quill and some ink and began to write . . . in a script that looked nothing like the Roman alphabet or, for that matter, the Greek one.

"Hi, there," Turtle gave the girl a tentative smile, tilting her head and not wanting to be too bothersome if she was busy, but also wanting to not leave any newbie stone unturned, "I'm not interrupting by saying hi, am I?"

"Not at all," Gabrielle assured her, setting the quill down. "Hello! Are you new here too?"

"Nope," Turtle shook her head, "not me. I've been around for a while now, so if you need anything, I should definitely be able to help. My name's Turtle, by the way."

"Gabrielle," she supplied, holding a hand out in the way that, where she came from, meant you clasped someone's forearm. But details. "So can you help me figure out exactly how far into the future I've come? I think I must have confused poor Peyton."

"Good to meet you, Gabrielle," Turtle said, taking the hand in a firm grip of her own for her own culture's customary business shake. "And I might? The calender year right now is 2009 A.D. Or C.E., I think. They changed it technically not too long ago, since A.D. was too religion-y, or something. Where is it you're from?"

"Good question," Gabrielle said, blinking a little at the handshake, but hey, she could go with it. "Peyton thinks it must be a really long time. How long ago was Oedipus king of Thebes for you, anyway? I'm from Greece, by the way. Poteidaia, but you've probably never heard of it."

Gabrielle's player fails at reading comprehension.

"Hmmm," Turtle said, tapping her chin thoughtfully. "Oedipus. That would be.....a really, really long time, I think. Like, probably over 2000 years. History was never my best subject, though."

"Two thousand years?" Gabrielle . . . actually took that pretty well in stride. "When I left home I never thought I'd ever travel quite this far."

"Okay, that's a new one," Dinah said, seeing the quill and scroll. "I haven't seen anyone here use those before." She grinned and waved. "New, hunh?"

"Just dropped in a little while ago," Gabrielle said cheerfully. "Literally, as a matter of fact. Not new, I take it?"

"Nope! Four months and counting." Dinah put up her mental shields and held out her hand. "Dinah Lance, senior-classmen, New Gotham City, New Jersey. And I'll be shocked if you've heard of it, no one else has."

"Well, now I have," Gabrielle assured her, and reached out to . . . well, she ended up halfway between the handshake Turtle had offered her earlier and the forearm-clasp she was accustomed to. "Gabrielle, from Poteidaia, in Greece. I'm sure you've never heard of it either."

"I've heard of Greece," Dinah offered, sitting down, and laughing as she untangled her hand from the-- wrist-shake? That worked. "Nice to meet you, Gabrielle. Are you writing a letter home already?" She peered at the letters. "Hunh. That's new too. That doesn't look like the Greek I've seen."

"Really?" Gabrielle squinted at the scroll. "It looks just fine to me. I'm not writing a letter, just writing down everything I've seen so far. I'll tell Xena all about it when I get home in person, but there are going to be so many interesting stories here!"

She took a breath. "I'm a bard, actually," she said, nodding, as if she was more than just an amateur at the moment. "Okay, I'm learning to be one. I didn't get to spend more than a little while at the academy with Homer and Euripides and the others, but why just learn to tell stories when I could be living the new ones?"

"Seriously? I mean. I've heard of Homer, and that other guy sounds familiar too, and you know them? Are you kidding me?"

"Oh, I wouldn't say we're close friends, but . . ." Gabrielle thought for a moment, beamed, and nodded. "We shared some interesting moments, definitely. Homer's going to be a great bard someday, I can tell, even if he has a bad habit of keeping his eyes closed when he tells stories -- but if you've heard of him, then he must have."

"Poteidaia. In Greece," Gabrielle said. Ignore the completely cracked-out script on her scroll. "I'm trying to reach a consensus on exactly how long ago that was from this time, but nobody seems to be able to agree."
