Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Since the area with all the informational signs was bound to get a bit clogged up, even more tables and chairs had been set up on the lawn, in a slightly different spot.

"Hi," Jennifer said, walking up. "Can I interrupt for a second?"

Gabrielle looked up from her scroll and set the quill down again. "Well, you're not trying to kill me, which is more than I can say about most interruptions, so sure. Why not?"

"Why would I be trying to kill you?" Jen asked. That seemed odd.

Gabrielle got a good look at her, and chuckled sheepishly. "Good question. You don't strike me as the warlord type. Sorry to assume."

"Warlord?" Jennifer said. "Whoa. I'm definitely not that."

Pause.

"Where are you from?"

"Poteidaia. In Greece," Gabrielle said. Ignore the completely cracked-out script on her scroll. "I'm trying to reach a consensus on exactly how long ago that was from this time, but nobody seems to be able to agree."

"Ancient Greece?" Jennifer said.

"Do I look that old?" Gabrielle asked. "Really?"

"No, of course not," Jennifer said. "But... the scroll and that."

"The last person I talked to said it sounded like it was about three thousand years ago, so let's go with that for now," Gabrielle decided.

"That's pretty old," Jennifer said. "But then again, I seem to travelled in time, myself."

"That seems to be going on a lot around here," Gabrielle mused.

Jennifer nodded. "This place defies all reason."

"You get used to that after a while," Gabrielle said breezily.

"Oh, you're not new here?" Jennifer said.

"Oh, no, I'm new," Gabrielle replied. "But my life in general seems to defy all reason, at least since I left home."

"I can hardly imagine that," Jennifer said. "So your parents didn't send you here?"

"Oh, no, Xena did," Gabrielle replied. "I suppose I should let my parents and Lila know at some point where I am, but they know I travel everywhere with Xena so I don't think they're too worried."

"You already left home?" Jennifer said. "Do you mind if I ask how old you are?"

"Fifteen, why?" Gabrielle asked. "Is that a big deal?"

"Wow," Jennifer said. "I just... people don't really leave home that young, anymore."

"Hopefully not because they've been married off younger than that," Gabrielle replied, looking suspicious.

Jennifer shook her head. "I mean, this is my first time really being away from home for longer than a vacation."
