Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Since the area with all the informational signs was bound to get a bit clogged up, even more tables and chairs had been set up on the lawn, in a slightly different spot.

"Really?" Gabrielle squinted at the scroll. "It looks just fine to me. I'm not writing a letter, just writing down everything I've seen so far. I'll tell Xena all about it when I get home in person, but there are going to be so many interesting stories here!"

She took a breath. "I'm a bard, actually," she said, nodding, as if she was more than just an amateur at the moment. "Okay, I'm learning to be one. I didn't get to spend more than a little while at the academy with Homer and Euripides and the others, but why just learn to tell stories when I could be living the new ones?"

Jaw-drop.

"Seriously? I mean. I've heard of Homer, and that other guy sounds familiar too, and you know them? Are you kidding me?"

"Oh, I wouldn't say we're close friends, but . . ." Gabrielle thought for a moment, beamed, and nodded. "We shared some interesting moments, definitely. Homer's going to be a great bard someday, I can tell, even if he has a bad habit of keeping his eyes closed when he tells stories -- but if you've heard of him, then he must have."

"And I thought knowing Merlin and Arthur was a stretch," Dinah muttered. "And yeah, we read the Odyssey last year in school... well, the short version." She shook her head. "Which he probably hasn't written yet, if he's still in school, and ow, time-travel, break my brain again." She huffed out a breath. "So who's Xena?"

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, I don't think he's written that one yet," Gabrielle mused; she hadn't met Odysseus yet herself, so she actually had no idea. "You've heard of Homer but not Xena?"

She looked absolutely scandalized.

"We might not be from the same worlds, if that's your Greek alphabet, and Xena's someone I should've heard of," Dinah said, pointing to the scroll. "'Cause our Greek looks different, and no, sorry." She shrugged apologetically. "What's she famous for?"

She might still be stuck back on, eyes-closed-Homer-omg-whoa.

"She's only the Warrior Princess!" Gabrielle exclaimed. "Think that girl Francine, if you know her, only if Francine could kill you with her little toe and catch arrows out of the air with her bare hands! We've only helped Hercules and Iolaus rescue Prometheus, gotten Helen out of Troy, and kept Pandora's box from falling into the wrong hands! How can you not have heard of her?"

"... I didn't sleep through that much Greek mythology or history," Dinah said, blinking at her very hard. "Um. Gabrielle?" Pause, and consider that name, too. Hunh. "Everybody here who's heard of most of those names thinks they're just stories. Not real. And that's not the first time that's happened, but..."

Re: More General Mingling [Summer 2009]

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, it's real," Gabrielle said, a little affronted now. "All of it's real. Believe me, I was there."

Re: More General Mingling [Summer 2009]

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"I believe you," Dinah assured her. "Just, a lot of people may tell you you got it wrong, because they've heard a different version. But it's happened before. Two of my friends? Have names just like these two heroes in some stories from about a thousand years ago, and they get annoyed if anyone tells them the other stories."

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"The other stories got it wrong if they left Xena out," Gabrielle said indignantly. "So I think I know how they must feel. Is this the Arthur and Merlin you were talking about?"

Re: More General Mingling [Summer 2009]

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Gabrielle kind of looked like a less-psychotic-and-pissed Katchoo there, when she was mad. It made Dinah smother a giggle. "Um, yeah. Arthur's a prince. Merlin's his manservant. The stories all say Arthur becomes king after being a stable hand first, and Merlin's supposed to be this really old wizard." She shrugged helplessly. "No idea what's up with that."

And in a couple of years, everyone else's version of how the Battle of Marathon really went would be completely the opposite of Gabrielle's version. Go figure.

"I suppose two thousand years or so would get things a little confused," she said, considering.

"Or three," Dinah offered. "I think our version of Homer was that long ago. Anyway. What are you here to study, if you want to be a bard?" She grinned. "If you stick around here any time at all? You'll have a ton of stories."

Re: More General Mingling [Summer 2009]

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-05-10 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not sure yet," Gabrielle admitted. "Xena wants me to get a chance to brush up on my fighting skills while I study. I didn't exactly get a chance to look at the course listing before Ares sent me here though . . ."

Re: More General Mingling [Summer 2009]

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-05-10 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"There's lots of chances to study fighting here and if I pretend you didn't say Ares will it help not to break my brain when I wonder if you mean the Greek god of war?"

Facepalm.

"That's the one." Gabrielle rolled her eyes. "I'm never telling him you recognize him. His ego's insufferable enough."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-05-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh sure," Dinah said agreeably, rubbing her head. "Not like I'd expect anything else... so you're friends with Xena, and you write down her adventures?" She grinned. "Sort of like a sidekick?"

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-05-10 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
"I prefer to think of myself as a trusted companion," Gabrielle replied with a modicum of dignity. "But yes. I write down our adventures. She can't hog all the fighting even though she tries."

Who was that screaming person I thought I just saw?

Who, her? Just an animated homage on crack. Smile and nod, pretend she's gone already.

"Hey, I'm all for sidekicking. We're the ones who save the hero after the hero saves everyone else," Dinah said with a small grin. "And cooooooool. Oh, nuts. I was going to ask if I could read some, but I can't read Greek."

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-05-10 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh. That could be a problem," Gabrielle said. "I could read them to you sometime?"

She brightened considerably at Dinah's assessment. "We do, don't we? I happen to think it's an important job."

"Cool! We'll be in the cabins for two weeks in a couple days, that sounds like the perfect thing to listen to around a campfire." Dinah bounced, grinning. "And yeah! I mean, it's not like it's permanent. You have to learn crimefighting and weapons first on the job, before anyone lets you fight evil on your own, right? We're young, we have some time."

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-05-10 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Around the campfire is where I write some of my best scrolls," Gabrielle said brightly. Most of her scrolls at the moment, if you could read them, would read a lot like something on fanfiction.net actually. "I'd love a chance to tell some of those stories. So you know how things really happened."

"Cool!" Dinah bounced, then clarified, "Um, that means great, if it doesn't mean the same thing back in Poteidaia. And maybe we'll get a couple workshops together, that'd be fun."

Re: More General Mingling [Summer 2009]

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-05-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
"New words." Gabrielle beamed. "I like learning new words. They're so . . . interesting and full of potential. What sort of workshops are you taking?"
