Functional Fashion, Thursday, June 19

Class was, again, in the Danger Shop, although this time it was set up almost like a laboratory -- sleek, pale grey walls, a long counter on which stood bottles and vials and jars. Along the back was a display case, in which sat...

Superhero costumes?

"... Good morning, class," Lulu said, eyeing the set-up of the room a little suspiciously. "Today, we have a special guest lecturer joining us. She has come highly recommended to me for today's topic: disguise. Specifically, she focuses on how to hide one's identity when using one's... skills in public, most especially skills that could cause one to come under... investigation from sources by which one does not wish to be investigated.

"There are some of us here, in Fandom, who have abilities beyond the 'norm' for many versions of Earth. Some of us are not even from Earth, originally, and yet we find ourselves here, now. When travelling, there might be times we wish to use our abilities, to get ourselves involved in something while wishing to keep our identity unknown. That is when we look to disguise as a function of our clothing -- something to shield our identity while we work.

"Today," Lulu continued, "each of you is going to work with Ms. Edna Mode, who will guide you through the process of designing a costume that reflects your abilities and your personality. If you don't possess the kind of abilities about which I'm speaking, be creative: think about the skills you possess, and how they might suit the kind of role we're thinking of today.

"After all, today everyone gets to be a superhero." Lulu paused. "Or a supervillain. You will find no judgment here."

[... I have been looking forward to this class since the beginning. :D OCD will be up in a moment is up!]

Edna Mode is maybe 4' tall, with Coke-bottle glasses, a bowl cut, and enough energy for a dozen ferrets on double mocha espressos. Several notepads are scattered around her space at the end of one counter, along with rolls of fabric, boots, visors, and masks. Large sketches of Mr. Incredible (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver2.jpg), Elasti-Woman (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver8.jpg), and their (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver18.jpg) charming (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver15.jpg) family (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver9.jpg), as well as Frozone (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver7.jpg) and other heroes are posted around the room.

Edna smiles graciously, and says in a voice like a Teutonic buzz-saw: "Students! Greetings! I am here to assist you in finding your destiny! To dare, to be brave, and to LOOK GOOD DOING IT!" She holds up a roll of drawings and gestures dramatically. "Call me E, everyone does, darlings. Now. Come and tell me about how ridiculously heroic you are, and I will make you a costume to let the whole world know you are super without knowing who you are!"

Mac would never in a million years call herself heroic, but she still approached Edna, shooting her a little smile. This could be interesting.

"Can I design mine to co-ordinate with the hair?" she asked, gesturing at her pink streaks.

"But darling, of course! Wine and Strawberry! With Indigo accents, yes! Original, but feminine." Edna's colored pencil is already moving over the page. "So, a mask, dahling? Something, small, timeless? It will accentuate your cheekbones, fabulous. And what is your powers, my dear?"

It didn't take Mac all that long to figure out what she'd want as her superpower.

"Technopathy," she said immediately. Not that she knew how that would affect costume design.

Jeff had dragged himself over to speak to Edna for one simple, fundamental reason: to avoid spending another class sitting in the corner, saying nothing, his mouth fundamentally obstructed by the hugeness of Lulu's assets.

...Although, when he thought about it, really, assets didn't make for a very good euphemism considering that technically, it included a reference to the bottom, rather than the top, and...

It took Jeff about two minutes between making a move to look at Edna and actually opening his mouth to say anything. "Top," he said, eloquently.

"Hmmmmmm! Definitely. I wholly agree. Super-spandex, yes? To show off the muscles of a superhero, and define the form?" Edna inquired, peering at him over her glasses, pen going to work on the outline as she chattered away. "A place to start. Take off your shirt, dahling."

Wait, his shirt? Jeff fought back the urge to stare at his shirt. In the process, he wound up gaping at Edna, instead, with roughly the same level of confusion. "Won't that cause a bit of a draft?"

"I want something fashion-forward," Blair said. "Something the other heroes haven't even thought of wearing yet."

Blair didn't care so much about whether she was a hero or a villan, but hero sounded good in a class setting.

"HA! Edna Mode is always looking to the future! New fabrics! New colors! New combinations! Excellent, excellent." Edna had grabbed a piece of color chalk, then five, and was already doing a preliminary sketch, fingers flying. "So, dahling, mask, or no mask? Facepaint? It is new, yes, but aerodynamic. The right colors can conceal as well as emphasize. Do you need a visor? Perhaps the right sunglasses can BE THE MASK, ha, yes, I am genius. Talk to me dahling, inspire me!"

"Glasses," Blair said. "Sunglasses. Big but chic. Something with gloves and no ponchos."

Chad looked down...and down...at Miss Mode and considered this carefully.

Whatever it turned out to be, Chad was feeling slightly glad Teddy wasn't around to make fun of him about it.

"Um. I got this arm thing? It can't obstruct that," he offered.

Re: Assignment: Designing with Edna!

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Edna looked up... and up... at Chad, and then very quickly hopped up on the counter to peer at him, now about three feet closer than she was. Still not tall enough, but whatevers! "An ARM thing! Marvelous! A punch? A transformation? An energy bolt? Tell me, dahling, super-lycra or super-spandex?" A sketch took shape as she talked, then two, both thrown away at random. "Does it need support? Shielding!"

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh, well, no," Chad said, still trying to get over how wee tiny Miss Mode was. "Well. The arm is a shielding. Errr...hold on."

Chad took in a breath as he stepped back a little. His right arm drew back as well, and, as he gathered his spirit energy, smoke started to collect around it. He then brought it forward in a sharp jab and the hard red and black armour encased it almost quicker than the eye could discern, although the trailing smoke from the limb left a good indication of it. Chad tried to wave some of it away with his other hand before presenting the arm with a flex.

"See?" He knocked on his forearm a little. "Hard as rocks. So I guess nothing with sleeves, 'cause that'll get in the way. And no spandex, so I guess that other one."

Temari wasn't giving the sketches an annoyed look. Really.

She just adored spandex.

"Nothing that hinders my movements."

"Of course not! What kind of designer gets in the way of TRUE ARTISTRY!" Edna is so horrified she clutched a sketchpad to her chest for a moment, appalled. "And that is what heroism is! ART! Dahling, trust me, I have your interests at heart, I have fabrics that absorb friction, fabrics that can become invisible, getting in your way is the last thing it will do!"

"Hn." That was at least promising. "Anything that can take care of bullets?"

Hinata might have been looking at the pictures in horror.

"A-Ano... d-does it h-have be be s-skin tight?"

"Dahling, of course not. Skin-tight is for distraction as well as distinction!" Edna waved a pencil in the air, looking like the Statue of Liberty for a second. If the Statue were waist-height. "But you are young yet. If you are not comfortable, or wish to meld into shadows, there are options! Always choices." Colored pencils were already sketching away at Hinta's form in rough outline. "Tell me, your powers, your mission, what do you want your clothes to say? Intimidation, or invisible agent of justice?"

Hinata knew which one her father would prefer but...

"I-Invisible agent, p-please," she squeaked out, because there was no way she'd be intimidating people. "A-And I can s-see through t-things."

She had no idea how that could help or not.

Superhero? Yeah. Right.

Still, this looked fun, so Dōjima bounced over to their guest. "Ohaiyo, sensei. What can you do with me?"

Re: Assignment: Designing with Edna!

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Daimyo, darling. So good to see respect! Ahhhh, so many possibilities!" Edna's pen flashed across the page as she sketched Dōjima's face and outlined her body from different angles as she chattered on. "Your powers, your mission, your favorite color! Do you have a secret identity, or do you wish to declare to the world I AM SUPER??"

Finally, someone who spoke her language, in more ways than one.

"Me? My powers are all in the mind," she said, flipping her hair over her shoulder. It was true, since she felt like one of the only non-powered students on campus. "I don't do anything flashy, so I need something to declare my fabulousness."

Summer really only had one requirement. "I just want something that looks fabulous."

"Darling, naturally, but we have options. Skin-tight? Silhouette? Hmm, what are your powers, darling? Your mission. Who do you defend? Who do you fight?" Edna whipped out a sheet of paper and started making a preliminary sketch, muttering happily to herself. "Hmm, gold accents, maybe?"
