Functional Fashion, Thursday, June 19

Class was, again, in the Danger Shop, although this time it was set up almost like a laboratory -- sleek, pale grey walls, a long counter on which stood bottles and vials and jars. Along the back was a display case, in which sat...

Superhero costumes?

"... Good morning, class," Lulu said, eyeing the set-up of the room a little suspiciously. "Today, we have a special guest lecturer joining us. She has come highly recommended to me for today's topic: disguise. Specifically, she focuses on how to hide one's identity when using one's... skills in public, most especially skills that could cause one to come under... investigation from sources by which one does not wish to be investigated.

"There are some of us here, in Fandom, who have abilities beyond the 'norm' for many versions of Earth. Some of us are not even from Earth, originally, and yet we find ourselves here, now. When travelling, there might be times we wish to use our abilities, to get ourselves involved in something while wishing to keep our identity unknown. That is when we look to disguise as a function of our clothing -- something to shield our identity while we work.

"Today," Lulu continued, "each of you is going to work with Ms. Edna Mode, who will guide you through the process of designing a costume that reflects your abilities and your personality. If you don't possess the kind of abilities about which I'm speaking, be creative: think about the skills you possess, and how they might suit the kind of role we're thinking of today.

"After all, today everyone gets to be a superhero." Lulu paused. "Or a supervillain. You will find no judgment here."

[... I have been looking forward to this class since the beginning. :D OCD will be up in a moment is up!]

"I want something fashion-forward," Blair said. "Something the other heroes haven't even thought of wearing yet."

Blair didn't care so much about whether she was a hero or a villan, but hero sounded good in a class setting.

"HA! Edna Mode is always looking to the future! New fabrics! New colors! New combinations! Excellent, excellent." Edna had grabbed a piece of color chalk, then five, and was already doing a preliminary sketch, fingers flying. "So, dahling, mask, or no mask? Facepaint? It is new, yes, but aerodynamic. The right colors can conceal as well as emphasize. Do you need a visor? Perhaps the right sunglasses can BE THE MASK, ha, yes, I am genius. Talk to me dahling, inspire me!"

"Glasses," Blair said. "Sunglasses. Big but chic. Something with gloves and no ponchos."

Edna actually paused in horror for a moment, shuddering as she grabbed pen-and-ink to emphasize the lines. "Dahling no. No no no no no. PONCHOS? Oh, are you trying to kill me? Why not just get a CAPE and then arrange a lovely state funeral? Augh." The face on her super-heroine now resembled Blair, but had big dark sunglasses that cut off some of the lines of her face, but still looked good. "Gloves, yes, with mesh? Or perhaps breathable fabric? Tell me dahling, what super-powers do you have? Mental, physical? Hmm. Perhapssssss, yes, a matching hair accessory, to coordinate with the glasses..."

"I'm fond of headbands," Blair told her. "And my abilities are all mental. I think breathable fabric for the gloves. Mesh is a little too retro-80s in the bad way."

"Brava, my dear. Without physical powers to make them necessary, the mesh is redundant. We throw it away!" Edna balled up a piece of paper and threw it in the air in her enthusiasm. "Excellent, yes, hairband, to avoid bad hair days, so important when fighting crime. The supervillainess must NEVER look better than you! And since your powers are mental, we are free to do as we want. Gloves! Hmm, colors, dramatic, yes, but not so dramatic one mistakes you for an emo-heroine, bah, no, that is also retro."

"There is retro in the good way," Blair pointed out. "'30s and '40s style, or anything Audrey Hepburn would look good in. I'm not afraid of color, or patterns."

"Patterns, no, unless hmm perhaps lightening bolts of mental power, small ones, as nuances, intimidating, yet feminine?" Forest Green with silver bolts at the arm seams, neckline, and one small badge on the hip took shape, as Edna frowned, trying to decide. "Perhaps black? No, no, I think not, later, when you have already saved the world three times. A skirt? With tights? Yes, Audrey Hepburn! Darling, it is so good to know the next generation is aware of the masters."

"She is a goddess to me," Blair said, with a tone that implied Audrey being a goddess pretty much went without saying.

"Then yes, sunglasses hairband gloves, dress darling, exactly, with tights, like Funny Face only not, you are a brilliant and sneaky icon of classic mental intimidation!" The green sketch got scrubbed for one in black-and-white, now that Edna had a firm goal, and she beamed in satisfaction at the sketch that took shape. "You will immediately COMMAND THE ROOM as well as any aspiring supervillains, ha!"

Blair looked rather happy about all that. "Perfect."
