Functional Fashion, Thursday, June 19

Class was, again, in the Danger Shop, although this time it was set up almost like a laboratory -- sleek, pale grey walls, a long counter on which stood bottles and vials and jars. Along the back was a display case, in which sat...

Superhero costumes?

"... Good morning, class," Lulu said, eyeing the set-up of the room a little suspiciously. "Today, we have a special guest lecturer joining us. She has come highly recommended to me for today's topic: disguise. Specifically, she focuses on how to hide one's identity when using one's... skills in public, most especially skills that could cause one to come under... investigation from sources by which one does not wish to be investigated.

"There are some of us here, in Fandom, who have abilities beyond the 'norm' for many versions of Earth. Some of us are not even from Earth, originally, and yet we find ourselves here, now. When travelling, there might be times we wish to use our abilities, to get ourselves involved in something while wishing to keep our identity unknown. That is when we look to disguise as a function of our clothing -- something to shield our identity while we work.

"Today," Lulu continued, "each of you is going to work with Ms. Edna Mode, who will guide you through the process of designing a costume that reflects your abilities and your personality. If you don't possess the kind of abilities about which I'm speaking, be creative: think about the skills you possess, and how they might suit the kind of role we're thinking of today.

"After all, today everyone gets to be a superhero." Lulu paused. "Or a supervillain. You will find no judgment here."

[... I have been looking forward to this class since the beginning. :D OCD will be up in a moment is up!]

Edna Mode is maybe 4' tall, with Coke-bottle glasses, a bowl cut, and enough energy for a dozen ferrets on double mocha espressos. Several notepads are scattered around her space at the end of one counter, along with rolls of fabric, boots, visors, and masks. Large sketches of Mr. Incredible (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver2.jpg), Elasti-Woman (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver8.jpg), and their (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver18.jpg) charming (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver15.jpg) family (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver9.jpg), as well as Frozone (http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/incredibles_ver7.jpg) and other heroes are posted around the room.

Edna smiles graciously, and says in a voice like a Teutonic buzz-saw: "Students! Greetings! I am here to assist you in finding your destiny! To dare, to be brave, and to LOOK GOOD DOING IT!" She holds up a roll of drawings and gestures dramatically. "Call me E, everyone does, darlings. Now. Come and tell me about how ridiculously heroic you are, and I will make you a costume to let the whole world know you are super without knowing who you are!"

"Lulu! Dahling. The dress! So bold! And your students! Very amusing, dahling, I'm thrilled to be here. If we can teach them good habits now, they will never be labeled as side-kicks." Edna bopped over to Lulu-- there's really no other word for it, then tilted her head first one way, then the other. "Dahling. Who does your designs? Daring! Cantilevers?"

"Genius! With your infrastructure, yes, there is no other option. Leave the bouncing to Elasti-Woman, yes? Three children, and everything is still as taut as a rubber-band. Lovely and smart! Good, good. But darling, skirts? Isn't that very Renaissance Jane? I worry, darling. What about dust-devils and tornadoes? You must have Dignity! No matter what!" You could hear the capitals she put on that.

"Very practical darling, to always have restraints for supervillains at hand. Is the jewelry solely decorative, if I may ask?" Edna's always looking for new ideas to improve on. "And the cleavage. Sunblock 9000?"

"You are so fortunate! That is an advantage. Miss Marvelous, lovely girl, freckles over every inch of her skin. Peels like an onion. I convinced her to at least wear a mesh. What is the point of saving the world only to die of skin cancer?" Edna shook her head and said, "And the cleavage is useful against so-called super-villains, isn't it? So boring, darling. But we can't lose any advantages possible."

Mac would never in a million years call herself heroic, but she still approached Edna, shooting her a little smile. This could be interesting.

"Can I design mine to co-ordinate with the hair?" she asked, gesturing at her pink streaks.

Jeff had dragged himself over to speak to Edna for one simple, fundamental reason: to avoid spending another class sitting in the corner, saying nothing, his mouth fundamentally obstructed by the hugeness of Lulu's assets.

...Although, when he thought about it, really, assets didn't make for a very good euphemism considering that technically, it included a reference to the bottom, rather than the top, and...

It took Jeff about two minutes between making a move to look at Edna and actually opening his mouth to say anything. "Top," he said, eloquently.

"I want something fashion-forward," Blair said. "Something the other heroes haven't even thought of wearing yet."

Blair didn't care so much about whether she was a hero or a villan, but hero sounded good in a class setting.

"But darling, of course! Wine and Strawberry! With Indigo accents, yes! Original, but feminine." Edna's colored pencil is already moving over the page. "So, a mask, dahling? Something, small, timeless? It will accentuate your cheekbones, fabulous. And what is your powers, my dear?"

"Hmmmmmm! Definitely. I wholly agree. Super-spandex, yes? To show off the muscles of a superhero, and define the form?" Edna inquired, peering at him over her glasses, pen going to work on the outline as she chattered away. "A place to start. Take off your shirt, dahling."

Wait, his shirt? Jeff fought back the urge to stare at his shirt. In the process, he wound up gaping at Edna, instead, with roughly the same level of confusion. "Won't that cause a bit of a draft?"
