Functional Fashion, Thursday, June 19

Class was, again, in the Danger Shop, although this time it was set up almost like a laboratory -- sleek, pale grey walls, a long counter on which stood bottles and vials and jars. Along the back was a display case, in which sat...

Superhero costumes?

"... Good morning, class," Lulu said, eyeing the set-up of the room a little suspiciously. "Today, we have a special guest lecturer joining us. She has come highly recommended to me for today's topic: disguise. Specifically, she focuses on how to hide one's identity when using one's... skills in public, most especially skills that could cause one to come under... investigation from sources by which one does not wish to be investigated.

"There are some of us here, in Fandom, who have abilities beyond the 'norm' for many versions of Earth. Some of us are not even from Earth, originally, and yet we find ourselves here, now. When travelling, there might be times we wish to use our abilities, to get ourselves involved in something while wishing to keep our identity unknown. That is when we look to disguise as a function of our clothing -- something to shield our identity while we work.

"Today," Lulu continued, "each of you is going to work with Ms. Edna Mode, who will guide you through the process of designing a costume that reflects your abilities and your personality. If you don't possess the kind of abilities about which I'm speaking, be creative: think about the skills you possess, and how they might suit the kind of role we're thinking of today.

"After all, today everyone gets to be a superhero." Lulu paused. "Or a supervillain. You will find no judgment here."

[... I have been looking forward to this class since the beginning. :D OCD will be up in a moment is up!]

"Dahling, of course not. Skin-tight is for distraction as well as distinction!" Edna waved a pencil in the air, looking like the Statue of Liberty for a second. If the Statue were waist-height. "But you are young yet. If you are not comfortable, or wish to meld into shadows, there are options! Always choices." Colored pencils were already sketching away at Hinta's form in rough outline. "Tell me, your powers, your mission, what do you want your clothes to say? Intimidation, or invisible agent of justice?"

Hinata knew which one her father would prefer but...

"I-Invisible agent, p-please," she squeaked out, because there was no way she'd be intimidating people. "A-And I can s-see through t-things."

She had no idea how that could help or not.

Edna peered at Hinata's white-on-white eyes, then beamed at her. "Stunning! Original! Ahhh, a mask with a visor, perhaps? Something geometric, to protect your face?" Scribble scribble, and an outfit with a trenchcoat, flaring out at the edges, started to form. "Come come, darling, don't be shy, I am on your side, you are my muse, I am at your service! Simply tell me what you wish, and I will make it real, like Cinderella, yes?"

"S-Something I can k-kick in?" she suggested meekly. "A-And... this n-needs to be visible," Hinata added, fingering the forehead protector she wore around her neck.

"Ahhh, wonderful, now I have a motif to return to, yes yes yes--" And the design on the forehead protector got repeated at the waistband and cuffs of the jacket, then Edna paused, peering at Hinata. "Darling. The colors. You are too pale. Be bold! Dare! You are a hero! Sand, with Midnight Black, perhaps? For added effect? And boots! Not heels, no no no no, but solid, for impact, no?"
