Functional Fashion, Thursday, June 19

Class was, again, in the Danger Shop, although this time it was set up almost like a laboratory -- sleek, pale grey walls, a long counter on which stood bottles and vials and jars. Along the back was a display case, in which sat...

Superhero costumes?

"... Good morning, class," Lulu said, eyeing the set-up of the room a little suspiciously. "Today, we have a special guest lecturer joining us. She has come highly recommended to me for today's topic: disguise. Specifically, she focuses on how to hide one's identity when using one's... skills in public, most especially skills that could cause one to come under... investigation from sources by which one does not wish to be investigated.

"There are some of us here, in Fandom, who have abilities beyond the 'norm' for many versions of Earth. Some of us are not even from Earth, originally, and yet we find ourselves here, now. When travelling, there might be times we wish to use our abilities, to get ourselves involved in something while wishing to keep our identity unknown. That is when we look to disguise as a function of our clothing -- something to shield our identity while we work.

"Today," Lulu continued, "each of you is going to work with Ms. Edna Mode, who will guide you through the process of designing a costume that reflects your abilities and your personality. If you don't possess the kind of abilities about which I'm speaking, be creative: think about the skills you possess, and how they might suit the kind of role we're thinking of today.

"After all, today everyone gets to be a superhero." Lulu paused. "Or a supervillain. You will find no judgment here."

[... I have been looking forward to this class since the beginning. :D OCD will be up in a moment is up!]

"Helmets! Of course, to protect your enormous brain! And that hair!" Edna was already designing one, complete with purple tinted glass on the visor. That Jeff has no mental powers doesn't occur to her: this is the Helmet of Truth Detection! "Talk to me darling, talk to me, a utility belt as well? Hmm. Or utility bandoliers yes, much more intimidating, possibly with Gauntlets of Doom?"

"Does it have to be Gauntlets of Doom, 'cos that sounds kind of threatening," he said, wobbling a little on his toes, "Can it be Gloves of Fire, instead? I've always wanted to have Gloves of Fire, they just seem to have a certain..."

He searched for the word.

"...Fireyness."

"Gloves of Fire, hmm, darling, it has been done, but for you? I WILL REINVENT IT!" Edna shouted, bouncing on her heels like a chihuahua on speed. "Now, extra-super flame-retardant flame-enhanced material, with the darts, so cunning, darling, for the streamlined look! And not red, but NUCLEAR SCARLET, much better, yes, exactly, and hmm, do we have Jet-Heels? Flying Boots? Gliding Shoes?"

"Jet-Heels," Jeff replied, instantly, even if he really wasn't completely sure about the whole heel part, but, "You've got to have jets. You can't be a superhero without jets these days, what if you wind up on an airport and you were overbooked?"

...He was pretty sure that made sense, somewhere. "I mean, really, going without jets is irresponsible when you... think... about it."

"Jet-Heels, brilliant, brilliant, yes, you will look like a wiry but intimidating inspiration for technological advance! I must insist on one thing if we give you these, darling." Edna paused, with a look of Awful and Awe-ful Consequence on her face. "NO CAPE."

There were no words for how much she reminded him of his mother in that moment.

"Okay," he said, meekly, and was immensely happy he hadn't suggested the whole cape thing before because then he might've lost a couple of his important bits. "...You don't have to yell," he mumbled, "I've seen 'Night of the Zombie Superheroes'."

"Darling, if only more people would. Documentaries are so depressing. It has been years, YEARS, and yet, the obvious still escapes the population!" She patted his arm, still scribbling with her other hand. "Darling, I only want what is best for you! I will restrain the voice, it intimidates, this, I know. Now! Armor! Where are you most vulnerable?"

That? Now that was a question Jeff didn't even have to think about the answer to. In fact, the answer was so glaringly obvious he couldn't even speak it, couldn't think it, couldn't make a single noise to communicate it or anything but...

...protectively cupping his crotch. He tried very hard not to think the word vulnerable.

Edna gave him a look of Extreme Sympathy mixed with Matter-of-Fact Eyeroll. "Darling. That is standard. Mr. Incredible will not even consent to try on a design without one! But for you, I make not just a cup, but a GRAIL!" Edna coughed, getting her voice to stop shouting again. "Of Protection. Invincible! Invisible! Integrity preserved? Happy, darling?"

"...Yeah."

He was nodding in a meek kind of way, but it quickly picked up enthusiasm. "...Really happy! That's excellent, is what it is!" A short pause, and then he was grinning like a moron. "Best thing I've ever heard!"

"Magnificent, darling!" Edna tore off a page done in red, black, and bright yellow, with a Helmet of Mind Reading, Jet-Heels, bandoliers of Useful Stuff, Grail Cup of Protection (TM), Gloves of Fire, and visor, and smacked it down in front of him. "Hero! Meet your destiny!!"

He took the page and held it up. Tilted it a little. And grinned. "That's me!" Jeff declared, "Turtle's got to see this. I've got the Helmet!"

"It is yours! Now! Go! DARE! BE! And darling, remember, it is wash-and-wear, but do not put the helmet in the dryer, yes? It will shrink."
