Functional Fashion, Thursday, June 19

Class was, again, in the Danger Shop, although this time it was set up almost like a laboratory -- sleek, pale grey walls, a long counter on which stood bottles and vials and jars. Along the back was a display case, in which sat...

Superhero costumes?

"... Good morning, class," Lulu said, eyeing the set-up of the room a little suspiciously. "Today, we have a special guest lecturer joining us. She has come highly recommended to me for today's topic: disguise. Specifically, she focuses on how to hide one's identity when using one's... skills in public, most especially skills that could cause one to come under... investigation from sources by which one does not wish to be investigated.

"There are some of us here, in Fandom, who have abilities beyond the 'norm' for many versions of Earth. Some of us are not even from Earth, originally, and yet we find ourselves here, now. When travelling, there might be times we wish to use our abilities, to get ourselves involved in something while wishing to keep our identity unknown. That is when we look to disguise as a function of our clothing -- something to shield our identity while we work.

"Today," Lulu continued, "each of you is going to work with Ms. Edna Mode, who will guide you through the process of designing a costume that reflects your abilities and your personality. If you don't possess the kind of abilities about which I'm speaking, be creative: think about the skills you possess, and how they might suit the kind of role we're thinking of today.

"After all, today everyone gets to be a superhero." Lulu paused. "Or a supervillain. You will find no judgment here."

[... I have been looking forward to this class since the beginning. :D OCD will be up in a moment is up!]

"PFftttttt. Easily. Kevlar-mesh with high-cotton count, RatMan discovered it but I perfected it." Edna's eyebrows danced as she grabbed another pencil, working away, scribble scribble. "Now, form-fitting, or form-concealing? Do you wish a mask, darling? Do you need a belt for weapons? Tell Edna everything!"

"No mask," Temari replied. Because that would just be pointless with the forehead protector. "Something strong enough to hold up a steel fan across my back about this big--" She held her hand up to about the height of her bust.

It was taller than Edna, still.

"Anything else, you decide."

"Ahhh, yes, like the chiyome, yes? Deadly flowers. A cut-away sheath, one which you can reach easily, but not risk injury to yourself. So important not to do that. The villains laugh." The pencil is flying faster, sketching something vaguely Japanese, with slightly closer-cut lines, but still open in the arms, with the robe stopping at the knees, with leggings beneath it. "Tell me, darling, colors, and boots? Or gloves? Or merely bracers, one needs support when wielding a weapon, after all."

An oddly familiar design.

"Gloves, fingerless in order to have better grip."

"Ahhh, yes. Hmmm, right-handed? Left-handed? I will put the hilt on the correct side. Unless you are ambidextrous? And I think, with your coloring--" Edna had grabbed Spring Rose inks before, but now pounced on her Violet Evening Destruction marker, darkening the sketch. "Yes! Feminine, yet most importantly heroic, yes yes YES!"

"Ambidextrous, but right if given a preference," Temari replied, tilting her head to try to look at the design.

"Ahh, then yes, hilt over here grip there repeat the symbol from the head protector here, for symmetry, darling, and VOILA!" Edna showed Temari her sketch (http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/74204597/15362827), action-pose, with fan drawn. "Intimidation! FASHION! HEROISM! Hmm, maybe some more pink, what do you think?"

"No pink."

"Then it is gone!" Edna slashed through it with a black marker, then crumpled it up, throwing it at the trash can. "More blue? Black? The color of bruises you will inflict on your enemies? You decide, darling."

"Blank and blue," Temari suggested. "Both are good colors."

"Brilliant darling, perfect," Edna was still sketching, finger flying faster than human eyes could almost follow, and then she ended it on a flourish. "YES! Behold! Fatal and fantastic!"
