Accelerated Scouting: Period Five, Week Two

Dale is dressed in full scouting regalia and in a very chipper mood as he sits at the main campfire sipping his coffee.

Apparently tussling with Dinos agrees with him

Sick bastard.

"Good Afternoon campers! I hope you remembered to wear comfortable shoes because we're going on a hike today. And not just any hike..."

Dale gestured to a stack of backpacks and camping equipment.

"We're going fully loaded. Why? Well you never know what you might need on a hike. So pack up your back with items you believe you might need and then lets get a move on. And for next week's class I'll need you to bring a swimsuit and report to the school pool."

Then Dale pointed to a collection of canteens. "It's going to be a hot one today, so make sure to stay hydrated."

But before we begin our hike, I'm proud to announce that all of you have achieved the rank of Tenderfoot. From what I've heard on the radio you've all been pretty busy, and I'm happy to pass out the following merit badges to all of you.

Naminé looked at Dale curiously. "I restored someone's existence from an interdimensional void, for whatever that may count for. And when did I care for the mentally ill?"

"I handwavily went camping," Z said. "Okay, I sent a replicate camping, but it adds up to the same thing."

"I did spend a whole night in a little cave thing," Troy asked. "Does that count for camping? I mean, I'd planned to actually go camping on Saturday night, but then ended up trapped in the cave by a dinosaur, so..."

"Oh, I worked on my knot tying while I was camping. I can show you if you want." Robin bounced.

Because I apparently missed this thread when pinging in before fleeing to work Tuesday "Sir, I, uh, worked on my knot-tying while camping." He rummages through his pack until he finds the rope, and demonstrates a knot or two.

Claire packed lightly. Very lightly. Canteen-and-binoculars-and-not-much-else lightly. After a moment's thought she added a Swiss Army knife as well.

And her new hiking boots were kind of light weight and stylish over function as well. It wasn't as if she was going to get blisters.

Jo started carefully packing any items she thought she might need.

Funny how this included salt and lighter fluid.

This wasn't completely new for Dean, though camping hunts weren't usually the norm. He carefully packed the essentials (salt, lighter fluid, matches, a couple of knives) along with the canteen and some trail mix, compass, map, GPS, blanket.

Nobody said anything about packing for an overnight hike so he figured that would do it. Though he really wished he could've included a gun or two as well.

Peter carefully took what he thought he might need. Which was mainly along the line of canteen, matches, rope, and a first aid kit.

After a considerable amount of thought, Bridge carefully packed up everything he thought he might need, like matches, rope, a compass and a small notebook. Plus an item or two that he probably wouldn't need, like a fork and some double chocolate chip cookies.

Dick packed lightly. Canteen, Swiss Army knife, rope, trail mix, compass, map. He felt around in his pockets to make sure his lighter was there. He never left home without one.

Turtle got some water. More water. Lots of water, and some rope (you always needed rope) and a Swiss army knife, and some trail mix, and matches, and her little earpiece radio, so that she could check the stocks on their hike.

Ami packed water, a lightweight tent and a bedroll. Matches in a waterproof container. She filled her canteen with water and then packed a second canteen. She also added a can of tinned meat product and a multi-tool with a can opener in it.

Pam packed up water, a couple granola bars, first aid kit (because she was pretty sure she'd probably fall down at some point) and a swiss army knife, though she'd probably have to ask someone else to show her how to use it without stabbing herself in the face.

Plenty of water, food, trail mix and a knife. River didn't like carring heavy things if she didn't have to.

Naminé had never been camping in her life. She looked at the array of items for a few minutes before sifting through carefully.

Finally she took a canteen filled with water, binoculars, matches, a flashlight, sunglasses, a compass, some trail mix, a canvas bucket hat and a lot of sunscreen. (It's not easy being pale.)

She also brought along her sketchbook and crayons, in case she saw anything interesting.

Johnny tried to think about what to put in his knapsack. He'd have to pack fewer things than usual, since he had to carry the bag himself, and not just tie it too the back of a bike.

After a minute of thought, he threw in a bottle of canteen of water, a couple granola bars, a lightweight blanket, a compass, a lighter, and a small AM/FM radio.

And he didn't actually own any sneakers, so he hoped a comfy pair of broken in ankle boots would do just as well.

Abigail looked through the supplies, and tried to pack as lightly as possible. She ended up with, among other things, a first aid kit, a blanket, water and granola bars, a compass, and a Swiss army knife (just in case).

Claire managed to keep pretty much in the middle of the group; neither too keen up front nor trailing behind, and just generallykept an eye out and enjoyed the sights.

"My apologies," Naminé said calmly. "There appears to have been a mistake in the wash."

The mistake would be that she - accidentally, you understand - had added enough bleach to turn all of her scouting uniform, if not white, then a delightful (if splotchy and uneven) pale shade of its former hue.
