Pie for Beginners - Monday 2nd period - Week 2

The class met the same place it did last time and each table this time had all the ingredients and supplies for making their own crust, as well as a mysterious box marked; "Open only in case of emergency".

"Good morning everyone! We're continuing to work with pie crusts because they are the most important, and most difficult element of the pie. It's a pretty basic part of pie, and adding small ingredients like more salt for a savory pie, or more sugar for a sweet, can make all the difference. There are different kinds of crusts as well other than the one that was demonstrated in the film, such as a graham cracker or saltine cracker crust. Last week, the film focused on the basics of crust making for the traditional kind of crust and at your stations there are the supplies to make it, as well as instructions from the show. If you mess up on your crust don't worry. There are boxes at each of your stations that will help if you do. Try not to use the words 'tender'." A puppet suddenly appeared and smacked him in the head. "....or 'flakey'," Arashi winced as one appeared on the otherside, then both promptly disappeared. "The Danger Shop seemed to think last weeks video was rather hilarious. Work with a partner, follow the instructions hand waving the part about refrigerating the dough, have fun, try not to burn the place down or get punched out by the puppets."

Maybe he should have included instructions on the ovens....? Nah.

[Plz wait for ocd ETA: The "Emergency Box" contains a pre-made pie crust if you mess up.]

Bart bounced a bit, looking around for a partner. There was pie to be made!

He just wasn't quite sure how still.

"Need a partner?" Anemone sidled over with an evil glint in her eyes. "I do know how to do some baking, like brownies and cookies, but I have never made pie. How much harder could it be?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] fastestkidalive.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Bart was completely oblivious to any evil glinting. If had noticed, he still would have been a bit too oblivious to the meaning of it. "Sure!"

He eyed the ingredients warily. "It can't blow up or anything, right?"

"Right. Unless they substituted C4 for butter, but I doubt Mr. Yondaime is trying to kill us all with pie." Anemone looked thoughtful. "Although that would be a great prank to pull on someone. Exploding pie. Hmmm."

Anemone shook her head and began studying the instructions intently. "So, do you want to cut the slippery things, or play with the food processor?"

[identity profile] fastestkidalive.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Bart was pushing random buttons on the food processor before she even finished the sentence. It was like a miniature spinning blade of death! "Huh?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nevermind." Anemone shoved the flour and salt in his direction, along with the measuring utensils. "Measure those out, then put it in the nice processor-thinggie and mix it all up."

She grabbed the butter and lard, and started chopping out single tablespoon sided chunks, just because that was easier for her than trying to do big measurements. "Do you know how to turn on the oven, Bart? Or will you blow us up?"

Katara was still half-bouncy from yesterday as she looked around for a partner.

Raph caught Katara's eye. This was possibly not on purpose, as he was scanning the room at random. Truthfully, he was trying to decide if he could work alone without drawing too much attention, but there she was, bubbly and bouncy and...

Barring ducking his head into his shell (which he would definitely not be doing), he'd just gotten himself a partner. He wiggled fingers at her in sort of a half-hearted greeting.

[identity profile] southernbender.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara noticed and grinned at him. "Hi! You need a partner?" She tilted her head. "I know I saw you out at the cabins, but I don't think we ever talked. I'm Katara."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] turtle-toughguy.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, Katara. I'm Raphael." He kept the long suffering sigh to his inner-monologue, glad Fandom hadn't broken it for the day, or something vile like that.

"I guess, yeah... I don't have a partner yet so..." He shrugged a little, nodding. It was obvious there would be no magical ninja-fairy of solo-pie-crust-making to save him. Partners it was.

"I have to tell you I have no idea how to make pie crust," she admitted, trying to be stealthy.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] turtle-toughguy.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, don't worry. Not like I know, right? My idea of makin' pie is puttin a frozen one in the oven on whatever heat the box says." which wasn't saying much, since he'd never actually done that. At least never with any pie other than the 'pizza' variety.

"We got directions. We can just, y'know, follow those."

Evie was all for the scientific method of baking. Measure, and check, and be very very precise. She weighed the butter to make sure she was getting exactly the right number of ounces while she waited for a partner.

Somewhere, Irulan's eyebrow was twitching.

Faile looked around for a partner and spotted Evie. "Excuse me?" she said when she walked over. "Do you have a partner yet?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, I don't!" Evie smiled enthusiastically, and put the bag of flower down with a small cough. "I'm Evie. Have you ever baked anything before? Or cooked anything? Not that it matters, I'm not very skilled at it myself."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"I am Faile," she said, pronouncing it fah-EEL. She looked at the kitchen appliances and the stove. "I have cooked, but never with any of these things. Baking is something I have never done."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm very pleased to meet you." Evie smiled encouragingly. "It's not too difficult, really it's not. My boyfriend and I did quite well!" She waved the recipe at Faile. "And see? Instructions!" She looked slightly worried. "You're not from this world, I take it?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Faile shook her head. "No, my world is very different from this one. Are you from here?"

Will grabbed her supplies, and started working on the basics while waiting for someone free to be her partner.

She really hoped there wouldn't be any surprise puppet attacks while she was waiting.

Pam waved. "Want to be partners?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] notawitch.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Will waved back. "Sure! I don't think it'll be too hard, so long as there aren't any big surprises in this class."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] keds-champion.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"This can't be too hard to mess up, right? Probably? Unless we get attacked by puppets," Pam commented.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] notawitch.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
She shuddered. "Yeah, I hope not. These pie puppets are the most violent ones I've ever met. Well, not met per se, but ... you get what I'm trying to say, right?"

She checked over the recipe. "Is the butter pre-frozen, or do we have to freeze it ourselves?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] keds-champion.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I know, and that's kinda saying something in this place. And I think maybe it's pre-frozen?" Pam replied, poking at the butter and lard to see if they were cold. "Why do you think we have to have it cold?"
