Pie for Beginners - Monday 2nd period - Week 2

The class met the same place it did last time and each table this time had all the ingredients and supplies for making their own crust, as well as a mysterious box marked; "Open only in case of emergency".

"Good morning everyone! We're continuing to work with pie crusts because they are the most important, and most difficult element of the pie. It's a pretty basic part of pie, and adding small ingredients like more salt for a savory pie, or more sugar for a sweet, can make all the difference. There are different kinds of crusts as well other than the one that was demonstrated in the film, such as a graham cracker or saltine cracker crust. Last week, the film focused on the basics of crust making for the traditional kind of crust and at your stations there are the supplies to make it, as well as instructions from the show. If you mess up on your crust don't worry. There are boxes at each of your stations that will help if you do. Try not to use the words 'tender'." A puppet suddenly appeared and smacked him in the head. "....or 'flakey'," Arashi winced as one appeared on the otherside, then both promptly disappeared. "The Danger Shop seemed to think last weeks video was rather hilarious. Work with a partner, follow the instructions hand waving the part about refrigerating the dough, have fun, try not to burn the place down or get punched out by the puppets."

Maybe he should have included instructions on the ovens....? Nah.

[Plz wait for ocd ETA: The "Emergency Box" contains a pre-made pie crust if you mess up.]

"Think the pie will do the same?" Bart asked, shaking some of the flour out of his hair in a puff of white powder.

[[So jealous!]]

"I hope not." Anemone finished chopping up her lard and butter, and took a moment to turn on the oven to the proper heat. It wasn't that she didn't trust Bart....no, wait, after that display she didn't quite trust him to not blow them up.

"Try again with the lid-y thing? If it mixes without going BOOM, we can toss in my slimy things." Anemone eyed the emergency box thoughtfully. "I'd rather not use the mystery box if we can help it."

Placing the lid on with an exaggerated care, Bart pushed on of the buttons to get it to work. No explosions yet.

"Alright!" He held his hand out for a highfive. It seemed like the right thing to do.

Anemone giggled and returned the highfive. "Yay! Partial victory is ours!" She snatched up the rolling pin, and made vague knighting motions in the air with it. "I hereby dub you Sir Knight of the Pie Crusts! Defender of flour!"

Bart bounced. "Does that make you the Pie Princess? Oh! And we an make you a giant pie hat like Irulan has too!"

"Someone has a hat made out of pie???" Anemone's eyes grew huge. "How do they keep the birdies from trying to eat it?"

She slid the butter and lard towards the food processor. "Do it again! Do it again! Then we get to add water and squish it all up! Like that sculpty-toy dough stuff in funny colors. I like that stuff. Maybe we can make little pie people before we roll it into the crust-shape." Anemone nodded seriously. "I can totally be the Pie Princess. Together, we rule over our court of pies."

How would she keep birds from eating a pie hat? "I don't know..." He'd have to ask her that now. And if she had a pie hat too.

Adding the butter and lard to the food processor, Bart pushed the button again. It kinda looked like peas now. Yellow-ish and brown peas. "And then we'll have to defeat the ice cream dragon to save the pie kingdom from a la mode doom!"

Anemone wrinkled her nose at the color of the mix. Ew. She looked at the directions again, and added a little water. "Mixy mixy mixy up! And what is a lamodie? Is it another kind of treat?"

Eying the directions suspiciously, she looked at her pie-buddy. "Bart? What is a 'zip-top bag'? This is not an item I am familiar with."

"Ice cream, I think," Bart replied. "They had it in one of those cooking magazines at the store."

He blinked at the second question. "Uhh, it's a bag with a top that sticks together. Kinda." Disappearing for a moment, he returned holding up on of the bags. "See?"

"I've heard of ice cream, but I haven't tried any yet." She inspected the bag Bart had provided, poking it experimentally. "Ok, so we have to put the goopy ick in the baggie? This seems like a lot of work for just the crust of a treat."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] fastestkidalive.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"You have to try it!" Bart said quickly. Because ice cream was right up there with coffee in awesome food from this era. "And um... I don't know. Maybe it's good enough to be worth the work?"

"Neither of us has ever had pie..." A smile twitched at the corner of Anemone's mouth. "And we are trying to make one. I think we should have gotten to *eat* pie before we were expected to create pie. Of course, that shall not stop us from creating a pie masterpiece."

Re: Make Crust

Bart grinned back at her. "And if it doesn't we can always use that as an excuse!"

"No excuses! Take no prisoners! We shall be victorious in our pie campaign!" Anemone was waving the rolling pin again. "Would you be so kind as to hold open one of the baggies for me while I pour and scrape the icky goop? Unless you want to do the pouring. I don't care, as long as I don't have to touch the stuff. It might be firm, but it still looks icky."

[identity profile] fastestkidalive.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Bart held out an open bag, looking at the goop like it might try to eat him. "Can't we just use the box?"

Anemone gave Bart The Look. The one that had quelled members of the U.F. Force and uppity scientists for years. "No. If we don't figure this out, we can't make our own pies later. Besides, I'm pretty sure the dough is not sentient." She shook the food processor until the last bits fell into the bag. "See? It didn't protest. We win."

Crossing off the previously done sections of the instructions, Anemone grinned. "Now we wait until chilled pound it to death! Violence!" Holding up the rolling pin reverently, she winked at Bart. "Would my Knight of Crust care to do the honors?"

Bart ducked and looked for a place to hide. She was scary!

"Okay..." And then, fear forgotten completely, because it had already been ages ago, he bounced and took the rolling pin to thwack the pie dough into submission. ...it couldn't end well for anyone.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, unleashing Bart with the rolling pin probably wasn't her best idea ever, but Anemone appeared unconcerned as she continued perusing the directions. "Why are pies round? What if I want to make a square pie? Or a triangle? My creative impulses are being stifled."

Bart paused long enough to think that over. Quite the accomplishment, really.

"Do we have those shapes for pans?"
