Pie for Beginners - Monday 2nd period - Week 2

The class met the same place it did last time and each table this time had all the ingredients and supplies for making their own crust, as well as a mysterious box marked; "Open only in case of emergency".

"Good morning everyone! We're continuing to work with pie crusts because they are the most important, and most difficult element of the pie. It's a pretty basic part of pie, and adding small ingredients like more salt for a savory pie, or more sugar for a sweet, can make all the difference. There are different kinds of crusts as well other than the one that was demonstrated in the film, such as a graham cracker or saltine cracker crust. Last week, the film focused on the basics of crust making for the traditional kind of crust and at your stations there are the supplies to make it, as well as instructions from the show. If you mess up on your crust don't worry. There are boxes at each of your stations that will help if you do. Try not to use the words 'tender'." A puppet suddenly appeared and smacked him in the head. "....or 'flakey'," Arashi winced as one appeared on the otherside, then both promptly disappeared. "The Danger Shop seemed to think last weeks video was rather hilarious. Work with a partner, follow the instructions hand waving the part about refrigerating the dough, have fun, try not to burn the place down or get punched out by the puppets."

Maybe he should have included instructions on the ovens....? Nah.

[Plz wait for ocd ETA: The "Emergency Box" contains a pre-made pie crust if you mess up.]

The puppets were back! Oh yeah, Bart was so digging some of those up at work today.

Bart bounced a bit, looking around for a partner. There was pie to be made!

He just wasn't quite sure how still.

Setsuna sighed worriedly. She didn't think she'd ever quite get used to those puppets.

To be honest, the puppets were about the only thing he could remember from the film... With the exception of a disturbing re-enactment of bungee jumping as performed by the Alton-Ken doll and some bad acting by a small asian woman.

Some familiarity was good to have... Maybe? Instructions on the other hand? Definitely good.

In any case, his beak was sealed. He hoped just thinking 'flakey' and 'tender' (and he looked from side to side suspiciously just in case) wouldn't get him punched in the head. He'd be kicking some puppet--? Uh... Puppet something, anyway...

Anne was busy scribbling away in a notebook: her notes might have seemed to hover around the topic of Puppets as Teaching Device, and How and How Not to Employ Them.

Even if she still had no idea how this class was going to help prepare her for teaching, she was determined to make the most of it.

FLAN IN A CUPBOARD!

This gives me amusing mental images of the kitchen being taken over by FF flans, you realize.

"Need a partner?" Anemone sidled over with an evil glint in her eyes. "I do know how to do some baking, like brownies and cookies, but I have never made pie. How much harder could it be?"

Anemone was doodling puppets vs. dinosaurs in the margins of her notebook. The puppets were totally winning.

Bart was completely oblivious to any evil glinting. If had noticed, he still would have been a bit too oblivious to the meaning of it. "Sure!"

He eyed the ingredients warily. "It can't blow up or anything, right?"

"Right. Unless they substituted C4 for butter, but I doubt Mr. Yondaime is trying to kill us all with pie." Anemone looked thoughtful. "Although that would be a great prank to pull on someone. Exploding pie. Hmmm."

Anemone shook her head and began studying the instructions intently. "So, do you want to cut the slippery things, or play with the food processor?"

Bart was pushing random buttons on the food processor before she even finished the sentence. It was like a miniature spinning blade of death! "Huh?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] death-of-hope.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nevermind." Anemone shoved the flour and salt in his direction, along with the measuring utensils. "Measure those out, then put it in the nice processor-thinggie and mix it all up."

She grabbed the butter and lard, and started chopping out single tablespoon sided chunks, just because that was easier for her than trying to do big measurements. "Do you know how to turn on the oven, Bart? Or will you blow us up?"

Making a face, Bart took the flour and salt. "I can!" He just never done it before this.

Man he hoped it wasn't explosive.

After fiddling with the controls on the over for seconds hours, Bart took to the measurements. And learned a valuable lesson about speeding through it and the fluffy cloudness of flour. He coughed and blinked as he was covered in the white powder. "Oops?"
