Pie for Beginners - Monday 2nd period - Week 2

The class met the same place it did last time and each table this time had all the ingredients and supplies for making their own crust, as well as a mysterious box marked; "Open only in case of emergency".

"Good morning everyone! We're continuing to work with pie crusts because they are the most important, and most difficult element of the pie. It's a pretty basic part of pie, and adding small ingredients like more salt for a savory pie, or more sugar for a sweet, can make all the difference. There are different kinds of crusts as well other than the one that was demonstrated in the film, such as a graham cracker or saltine cracker crust. Last week, the film focused on the basics of crust making for the traditional kind of crust and at your stations there are the supplies to make it, as well as instructions from the show. If you mess up on your crust don't worry. There are boxes at each of your stations that will help if you do. Try not to use the words 'tender'." A puppet suddenly appeared and smacked him in the head. "....or 'flakey'," Arashi winced as one appeared on the otherside, then both promptly disappeared. "The Danger Shop seemed to think last weeks video was rather hilarious. Work with a partner, follow the instructions hand waving the part about refrigerating the dough, have fun, try not to burn the place down or get punched out by the puppets."

Maybe he should have included instructions on the ovens....? Nah.

[Plz wait for ocd ETA: The "Emergency Box" contains a pre-made pie crust if you mess up.]

"Hey, Katara. I'm Raphael." He kept the long suffering sigh to his inner-monologue, glad Fandom hadn't broken it for the day, or something vile like that.

"I guess, yeah... I don't have a partner yet so..." He shrugged a little, nodding. It was obvious there would be no magical ninja-fairy of solo-pie-crust-making to save him. Partners it was.

"I have to tell you I have no idea how to make pie crust," she admitted, trying to be stealthy.

"Yeah, don't worry. Not like I know, right? My idea of makin' pie is puttin a frozen one in the oven on whatever heat the box says." which wasn't saying much, since he'd never actually done that. At least never with any pie other than the 'pizza' variety.

"We got directions. We can just, y'know, follow those."

She chuckled. "Right then. I'll measure the flour and you get the lard and butter?"

Katara had been taught how to cook in the dump and taste method. Therefore there was a lot of dumping and much less measuring of the flour than Alton would probably appreciate.

Raph liked to read, but only certain reading materials were that interesting. That's not to say he didn't try to be accurate and do things according to the instructions, but he certainly wasn't especialy precise about it, either.

Cutting butter and lard (even frozen, or very cold) proved to be rather slimy and disgusting. He was awfully warm-blooded for a reptile. "'Kay, whenever you're ready..."

Katara made a bit of a face and held out the bowl to him.

"Dump it in," she said, brandishing a pastry mixer.

He dumped it in as directed, one bit sticking stubbornly so that when it finaly flinged itself into the bowl there was a small mushroom cloud of flour. Raph's beak was lightly dusted enough to roll dough on.

"Special... So, does this cut down on the glare off my beak?" he asked, utterly deadpan.

Raph didn't want to call it a loss already, but he had a feeling 'flakey' and 'tender' weren't going to be words associated with their future crust.

She snickered as she looked up at him. "You look like an aged turtle now. With whiskers."

Raph almost crossed his eyes to try looking, then shook his head a little, rubbing his nose. "I don't think I'll ever have facial hair... Or any hair for that matter. I'll always have my boyish good looks."

He snerked a little at himself, then took a look at the instructions again. "So, where were we? What's next?"

"Next time I'm going to find a camera or something," Katara said, still snickering. "This class is obviously going to need to be documented." She studied the instructions, spelling the words out carefully. "We have to put it in this thing -" she pointed at the food processor. "-put the top on and push the pulse button to mix it up."

"Ooh.. I'm a ninja. Might be too stealthy for the camera." Ok, Raph wouldn't die if he kept pairing off with cute, friendly people. He could live with that.

He vaguely remembered the food processor from the film the class before. "Ok. In it goes, I guess." He checked to see that the food processor was plugged in, then grabbed the top. "Dump it in and I guess we'll.. pulse it into submission or somethin'..."

Katara studied him with a grin. "I'm sure I can catch you!"

She dumped the bowl carefully, trying to make sure all the crumbs went in. "Okay. Pulse like a pulse burger."

Raph smirked. "We'll see when you train a camera on me if you can actually catch me."

He reached out for the pulse button as he capped the processor. "...What's a pulse burger?" He couldn't exactly remember the specific 'technique' to 'pulsing', so he just pulsed until it seemed to have had enough.
