Pie for Beginners - Monday 2nd period - Week 2

The class met the same place it did last time and each table this time had all the ingredients and supplies for making their own crust, as well as a mysterious box marked; "Open only in case of emergency".

"Good morning everyone! We're continuing to work with pie crusts because they are the most important, and most difficult element of the pie. It's a pretty basic part of pie, and adding small ingredients like more salt for a savory pie, or more sugar for a sweet, can make all the difference. There are different kinds of crusts as well other than the one that was demonstrated in the film, such as a graham cracker or saltine cracker crust. Last week, the film focused on the basics of crust making for the traditional kind of crust and at your stations there are the supplies to make it, as well as instructions from the show. If you mess up on your crust don't worry. There are boxes at each of your stations that will help if you do. Try not to use the words 'tender'." A puppet suddenly appeared and smacked him in the head. "....or 'flakey'," Arashi winced as one appeared on the otherside, then both promptly disappeared. "The Danger Shop seemed to think last weeks video was rather hilarious. Work with a partner, follow the instructions hand waving the part about refrigerating the dough, have fun, try not to burn the place down or get punched out by the puppets."

Maybe he should have included instructions on the ovens....? Nah.

[Plz wait for ocd ETA: The "Emergency Box" contains a pre-made pie crust if you mess up.]

"You have more experience," Faile said warily. "I will do as you instruct."

"That's very generous of you," Evie said, beaming. "I cut up the butter bits already, if you could just put them in, I'll pour in the flour?" She started measuring, and dumping in big cups of flour. "Oh, how big of a pie do we wish to make? Should we double the recipe?"

Faile put the butter bits into the food processor. She looked at the pie pan. "Do we get a choice about how big to make it? I thought it had to fit in this pan."

"Oh, perhaps you're right. But then, we might have some left over!" Evie is nothing if not ambitious. "We can try that next week, though." She dumped in the flour, and carefully measured out the salt. "Hmmm. Right. 'Pulse 5 to 6 times until texture looks mealy.'" She frowned at the buttons. "I don't see one that says pulse. 'Chop.' 'Puree.' 'Blend.' 'Whip.' 'Pulverize.'"

"Pulverize sounds close to pulse," Faile offered helpfully.

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Pulverize it is!"

Evie hit the button.

Flour shot up and spread everywhere. "Ack ack ack ack!"

Faile put her hands over it to try and keep the flour in. "Make it stop!" she yelled.

"Eeeee!" Evie batted at the processor, hitting buttons randomly, up, down, and by sheer accident hit OFF. She coughed as the cloud of flour settled. "Well. That was-- bracing."

Faile exhaled in relief and dropped her hands. "Is it required that we use this thing?"

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Evie wrung her hands, then shook her head, coughing again as flour fell from her hair. "Perhaps not? Perhaps we can just mix them by hand? I think?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Faile nodded and began to brush flour off of herself. "I think that would be best."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right." Evie ahem'd, and then carefully dumped what was left of the flour/butter/salt mixture into a bowl. "I don't think we can make too much of a mess with a spoon, can we? What do we do after that?" she asked, starting to pat the butter-and-flour together.

"I have no idea," Faile said.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Evie blinked, and picked up the instructions. "Hmmm. It says 'Add lard.' And, also, 'spritz thoroughly with water'." She cocked her head. "Perhaps if we add the water slowly, that will make up for not using the processor... thing?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Faile gave her a blank look.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
"You have no idea either," Evie said, discouraged. "Well then. All we can do is try, right? You pour, I'll stir."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Faile shrugged. "Alright."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Evie stirred. And stirred. And stirred.

Hmm. "Is lumpy the same as mealy, do you think?"

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know what mealy looks like," Faile said with a shrug.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Your turn," Evie said, putting down the spoon and bowl. "And I'll read the next bit to see what we do. Hmm...." She pulled out a ziplock bag and re-read the directions.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"What am I supposed to do?" Faile asked, looking at the mess on the counter.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Keep stirring for a bit," Evie said, "then we put it in this bag," she held up the clear, ziplock bag, "and squeeze it into a ball."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Faile picked up the spoon and began stirring.

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Evie finally got the ziplock bag open, and beamed at Faile. "Right. Let's scoop that into here. Then squish it!" She held the bag open for Faile, and commented, "Faile, that's a very pretty name. Where are you from? I don't think I've ever heard that one before."

Re: Make Crust

[identity profile] falcon-or-blade.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
"I am from Saldaea in the Westlands of my world," Faile explained as she scooped the lumpy dough into the bag. It didn't look like the dough in the video from last week, but Faile didn't know what to do to fix it so she just let it be. "Faile means falcon in the Old Tongue."
