Folklore and Fact: Mystical Artifacts, Week 8

If Sakura noticed anything amiss about some of her students today, she didn't bat an eye, instead directing their attention to the display screens, which featured a small ornamented mallet and a round board covered with Chinese trigrams. Not, perhaps, coincidentally, there were two lockboxes on the table.

"It's been my experience," she noted dryly, "that teenagers are even less inclined than usual to devote attention to their studies the week after a holiday. It would be a less than efficient use of my time to try and make you all pay attention today. So instead, you'll be examining a relatively harmless artifact: Uchide's Mallet, or the Mallet of Luck. It's the basis for the tale of the One-Inch Boy, and is said to grant its holder's wishes when swung, although its more common and obvious feature is the ability to make its wielder grow."

"Why is this dangerous?" asked Sakura, shrugging one shoulder. "You shouldn't have too much trouble imagining the kind of damage a rampaging fifty-foot creature can do."

She passed a stack of handouts around the room and continued, "The other object you'll be examining today is the Dragon Eye Compass Board, which uses the Chinese practice of Feng Shui to alter the luck of the people around you for good or ill. Please take a moment to read the handout and write a brief essay listing three ways you could use something like this to change your own fortunes. Once you've turned that in, you may come up and examine the Mallet."

[OOC: Speaking of less than efficient, that would be the way my brain is working this week, augh. Thus the incredibly short class post. OCD is up, and further details in the appropriate subthreads. Class Info Post here.]

Valentine wasn't paying attention in class today.

It wasn't because of the vacation, of course.

She was more busy trying to keep from bouncing in place to see what would happen.

Sam was listening, and trying to take notes the best he could. This plan wasn't working as well as it usually did though.

Jo stared at the lack of male people around the class and muttered Christo under her breath.

Chris took notes and slumped down his seat, hoping no one would recognize him.

Tori took notes and noticed the absence of males in the class. She wondered what Fandom had done this time.

Stark had managed to get the flailing mostly under control before coming to class. Now there was mostly the urge to hide under the desk to contend with. Still, some notes were taken. They just weren't all that good.

Walter took notes, sort of paid attention, and spent a fair bit of time looking amused by the not-usually-girls. Yes, she was one, too, but she had experience on her side.

The lack of boys in the class made Dean feel better as it was clear it wasn't just him and Alec. He glanced around, trying to figure out what Sammy would look like as a Samantha.

Haruhi noticed something a little different in class today-- namely, seeing people she could have sworn were never in the class before. Perhaps, with the amount of the classmates looking either uncomfortable or awkward, something was going on and she'd clearly missed the memo on it all.

Well, whatever it was, she wasn't letting it distract her from her work. Haruhi listened, jotting down notes whenever they were needed.

Valentine's essay might have had something to do with ensuring that he never, ever turned into anything that he wasn't supposed to be, ever again. The three ways? Were more like three things that he never again wanted to be. Faceless guys named Jason, weetiny chickens, and girls were those three things.
There might have been massive underline abuse in reference to never again wanting to be female.

Pippi reads over the instructions on Feng Shui and writes a short essay about three ways to make changes to create a zone of serenity, peace, and joy. That way, when the island is attacked, people could just go there and relax. And if she could extend it over the whole island when activated then so much the better, as invading forces would have no choice but to "chill the frack out".

Or something.

But she wouldn't want the whole island to be covered by this the whole time, as that might have some sort of adverse effect.

Phoebe examined the board very carefully and then started writing her own essay.

"First, I would use it to make sure that my soulmate and I never again woke up with the wrong person in bed, unless it was a threesome agreed upon before hand -- which I would not be adverse to. I would use the board first to change the fortunes of those that are having a hard time making it in the day to day world around us. I would also use such a thing to help protect those here at Fandom that are not able to protect themselves including some of the guys here. For myself, I would use it to help me get better at my powers holding my alcohol not accidentally sleeping with my male friends who have also slept with my soulmate my martial arts and fighting skills so I can better help people."

Wyatt wrote his essay about using luck to increase his powers, learn to control them, and to bend reality to bring his parents back to life.

Dawn wrote her essay, more than a little tongue-in-cheek, about wishing for good, supportive bras for all her newly female classmates, trying to get an advance schedule from Fandom about when it was going to do weird things to the boys so she could make sure she had film in her camera and chocolate in the room, and using the Feng Shui-o-meter to make sure Isabel came back to Fandom safely.

Hey, all the wishes couldn't be obnoxious.

Pippi peered at the hammer and tentatively reached out to pick it up.

As she hefted it in her hand, she realized she was hungry and wished she had a salami sandwich right about now.
