If Sakura noticed anything amiss about some of her students today, she didn't bat an eye, instead directing their attention to the display screens, which featured a small ornamented mallet and a round board covered with Chinese trigrams. Not, perhaps, coincidentally, there were two lockboxes on the table.

"It's been my experience," she noted dryly, "that teenagers are even less inclined than usual to devote attention to their studies the week after a holiday. It would be a less than efficient use of my time to try and make you all pay attention today. So instead, you'll be examining a relatively harmless artifact: Uchide's Mallet, or the Mallet of Luck. It's the basis for the tale of the One-Inch Boy, and is said to grant its holder's wishes when swung, although its more common and obvious feature is the ability to make its wielder grow."

"Why is this dangerous?" asked Sakura, shrugging one shoulder. "You shouldn't have too much trouble imagining the kind of damage a rampaging fifty-foot creature can do."

She passed a stack of handouts around the room and continued, "The other object you'll be examining today is the Dragon Eye Compass Board, which uses the Chinese practice of Feng Shui to alter the luck of the people around you for good or ill. Please take a moment to read the handout and write a brief essay listing three ways you could use something like this to change your own fortunes. Once you've turned that in, you may come up and examine the Mallet."

"Because you're not you," Sam replied. "I guess it's a little different for you guys than most people though, since you like girls too."

"You telling me you wouldn't still like Dawn if she woke up a boy?"

"Of course I'd still like her. But I wouldn't want to make out with her or anything," Sam replied.

"No? You sure about that?" Dean pressed.

"Of course I'm sure! I don't have the same-sex desires that you have, whether you want to believe that or not. Are you saying you think Dawn should want to make out with me while I look like this?"

"Well, what if we were stuck like this? You'd just give up your relationship with Dawn?" Dean asked curiously.

Sam frowned. He hadn't honestly thought about that possibility. "I guess I'd have to," he said.

Dean stared at him. "You're serious. You'd give up Dawn just because a change in plumbing?"

"Well I wouldn't have much of a choice, Dean. She doesn't like girls like that," Sam replied. "I wouldn't make her stay with me, that would be cruel."

"What if she got turned into a boy? Would you leave her then?"

"Not unless she wanted me to," Sam replied easily. "But I still wouldn't do anything physical with her," he added.

Dean shook his head and shrugged. "Your loss."

"So you're saying that if you were in my shoes, you wouldn't let Dawn go?" Sam asked. "You'd try to make her stay with you, even if she wasn't attracted to you, and you knew you could never do anything sexual with her again?"

"I'm saying I'd try to make it work before dumping her," Dean said.

"I wouldn't dump her, I'd let her dump me," Sam explained.

Dean shook his head. "I don't think she would."

Sam rolled his eyes. "That's because you believe that deep down, everyone is willing to be with someone who's the same sex. Which is noble, I suppose, but not actually true."

Dean shrugged. "Maybe I just think the contents are more important than the wrapping. Least when you're talking a relationship and not just a quick roll in the hay."

"Not all of us can look past the wrapping though," Sam replied.

"Like I said, your loss."

Sam sighed, and rolled his eyes, knowing he'd never get through to Dean. "Whatever."

Dean waved the whole subject off with a hand. "Well, anyhow, it's Fandom so if it's like the other unexplained transformations, it'll probably end as mysteriously as it began. If it doesn't in a few days, we can panic then."

"Yeah, I guess," Sam said, doodling in his notebook. "And we're keeping all the real girls entertained for the time being."

"It's kinda interesting too," Dean said. "Getting a glimpse of the other side and all that."

"I'm trying my best to get as few glimpses of this side as I possibly can, thank you."
