New teacher, new class

The professor strides into an empty classroom, absently and arrogantly flipping his cloak back over one shoulder. When he whirls to face the classroom, his eyes flare. His voice booms out across the room. "I am Camulus, your go- ah, teacher. You may refer to me as 'sir', 'Professor', or 'my lord'. The courses that I will be teaching will be focusing on the mighty civilisation that I ruled that stretched from Asia Minor to the westernmost points of Europe and the British Isles." He pauses, gazing around with a slight sneer on his face. "I will be teaching three courses on the Celts. Here are the syllabi. You may sign up below. I will be accepting students until the first class on Monday."

Vulcan philosophy

The class originally scheduled was, "Ancient Vulcan weapons and modern applications of their uses". However, after reviewing the medical facilities on this campus and finding them woefully inadequate to deal with types of injuries that were sustained during this class at the Klingon Military Academy, decapitation being the most sever, and finding the psychological profile of the students at this campus to be more prone to violence than the Klingon's, live weapons will not be used in the class. The class will now resemble the philosophy class as inspired by Jedi Master Yoda.

Instructor: Spock
Office Hours: By Appointment
Class Meetings: Tuesday/Thursday 1:30-2:30pm

The class curriculum will focus on the academic aspects of training, offering a unique system designed to foster the best qualities in each student. It encompasses the Vulcan philosophy that blends obedience, divergence and separation. The system-like all substantial karate systems- is demanding; its philosophical and ethical teachings help the student endure the hardships and trials of training.

The system embraces the principles such as humility, truth, self-discipline, self-reliance, peace, respect, unselfishness, honor, courage, loyalty and perseverance. To be one with oneself allows oneness with all to be achieved. Knowledge and understanding of self allows knowledge and understanding of others.

Also do not chew gum during class. I will deduct 5% from your grade if you are caught chewing gum during class time. I will also physically remove you form the class room by whatever means are necessary and all violators with be turned over to [livejournal.com profile] principalconnor.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Written Exercises: There will be three short (2 pages) written exercises asking you to apply a theory we have studied to a concrete case. Written exercises count 70% toward your overall grade.

Class Discussion: Philosophy cannot be passively learned. It requires active engagement, both with the texts and with individuals in the form of discussion. For this reason class participation counts for 30% of your overall grade. In order to get a good participation grade, you must have excellent attendance, do the assigned reading for each class period, and regularly take an active role in class discussions.

Class space is limited to the first 10 people who respond to this post. I will be updating this post and listing people's names as they apply.

2. [livejournal.com profile] oatmanspatient

UPDATED: First class will being this Thursday (9/15).

Discussion the 1st: When using the non-lethal Vulcan nerve pinch* to incapacitate, why is it unethical to go through your victims pockets and look for loose change?

*Vulcan nerve pinch: A Vulcan technique in which finger pressure is applied to certain nerves at the base of the neck, instantly and nonviolently rendering that individual unconscious. Although the technique appears to work on nearly all humanoid species, and several non-humanoids as well, few non-Vulcan have been able to master the nerve pinch.

[note: I tried, unsuccessfully to teach the nerve pinch to Kirk, but many years later, Data was able to master the technique. If you ask politely I will teach this in class and see if you terrans have any better success than Kirk did.]

Home Economics Class Sign-ups.

Good Afternoon, students of [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh!

My name is Mrs. Van De Kamp, and I am going to be chairing the Home Economics Department this year. I know that some of you may believe that Home Economics is a field of study that went out the way of the dinosaurs, but let me tell you, proper manners never go out of style.

Please sign up below, and indicate which class you would like to take. More specific details will follow at the first class meeting. And although Home Economics has traditionally been a female pursuit, I encourage both genders to sign up.

Home Ecomomics 101 )

Perfect Party Planning (Home Ec 301) )

Classes will begin tomorrow, and an updated roster and syllabus will be available at the first class. If you need to speak to Mrs. Van De Kamp, her office hours are posted here, feel free to stop by anytime.

QUANTUM PHYSICS DEPARTMENT: COURSE INFORMATION

[Tacked to the main school message board is the following, printed on slightly psychic paper.]

QPHY 123 Monday and Wednesday (chronofluid)
'I'm My Own Grandfather?!': Essential Quantum Theory for Beginners
This course will be a basic overview of what one needs to know in order to understand the basics of time travel. Of particular note will be sections on preventing harm to the spacetime continuum, the structure of the universe, and the limitations of temporal dynamics. Twenty student cap.

QPHY 305 Thursday (chronofluid)
'What's a Temporal Anomaly, Anyway?': Secondary Quantum Physics Seminar
This course goes beyond QPHY 123, focusing on more complex problems faced by the time traveller. Includes sections on stabilising wormholes and changing historical events without rupturing a society. An overriding theme will be the mental and emotional results of leaving and returning to one's 'home' era. Course is limited to ten students who have had at least some time travel experience.

If there is interest, there will be an open weekly single credit course (one short final paper) on the emotional and mental effects of time travel in application. Please leave me a note if you would be interested.

Performing Arts Classes and Syllabus

All classes will take place in a fluid-type of time so as not to interfere with the classes that you are already taking.

Theatre 101 : What is Drama? MWF
This course will cover the basics of stage movement, the different genres of stage and screen, and performing short scenes in front of the class. We will be watching different movies and stage productions as well, and discussing their merits and flaws. There may be guest speakers from time to time.

Theatrical Theory and Interpretation MF
This course will delve deeper into the origins of theatre and the part it has played in societies everywhere. There will be field trips to different productions in different realms. You will need permission slips.

Due to the intense nature of this course, only ten students will be accepted.

Theatrical Dance TTh
This course will cover all aspects of dance and the performance of dance. This is a sliding scale class, so no matter your profiency in dance, there will always be a challenge for you. We will study the different Dance methods and specialties and your final exam at the end of the semester will be a live performance.

Voice Performance: Choir TTh
This course will cover the training of your voice for singing in productions and making yourself be heard.

Advanced Theatre MWF
This course will be intense. From day one you will vote on two plays to be performed by the class for other classes at the end of the semester. We will work on the audition process, stage blocking, interpretation of lines, and how to interact with your fellow players.

This is a fast-paced course. If you are not positive that you can meet the demands and obligations, please do not enroll.

Directing 101 T
Directing 201 T
Directing 301 Th
These courses will focus on the more focused aspects of directing in the theatre and film. Each course is a semester long and at the end of the semester you will have learned the following:

101: What makes a good director as opposed to a bad director
201: How to make sure that you pick the right projects worthy of your skills and talents
301: How to put on a show from beginning to end

Theatre and Production
In this course you will learn all of the intricacies of producing your own show. This is a year-long course

In addition, I will be forming a Performance Arts Club. Auditions will take place next week. No matter what category of performing arts you fall into (Drama, Choir, Dance), the Club will be open to you. I will draw up a charter for the club sometime before auditions next week.

If this is something that may interest you, please reply in the appropriate thread.

Also, I find myself in need of two teaching assistants. Sawyer has volunteered to be one of them. Are you still interested in the position, Sawyer? TAs will get full course credit.

Looking forward to seeing you in my classes.

Rosters as of the end of open enrollment

All right, here's the compiled lists of admin, teachers, and students as of the end of Sunday:

Current rosters )

I've removed a few names -- teachers who haven't been around and students whose journals have been deleted -- and added everybody who asked to enroll today, as far as I know, with the exception of one character who's still coming as soon as they get an RP journal name to me. (And for the record, no more teachers. Seriously, I think we're good now.)

You should respond to this post if:

-- You enrolled before the previous cutoff or before today's open enrollment ended and you're not on the list.
-- You haven't yet received an invitation to join [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh. (Everybody check your invites ... I was adding people as I went, so everybody on that list should either have an invite waiting or have already accepted it.)
-- Your character name, RP journal name, or fandom are listed incorrectly.

DO NOT respond to this asking to be added to [livejournal.com profile] fandomhighdorms or [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh_ooc if you haven't already been invited to join. [livejournal.com profile] jerusalem_s is still working on that, so be patient. Also, for all of the newbies, [livejournal.com profile] fandomtownies is our only comm with open enrollment and [livejournal.com profile] fandom_lounge is only open to teachers to post in (although others can comment and watch).

(no subject)

Hey kids,

President Beeblebrox here, other wise known as "The best bang since the big one."

As I'm currently outrunning a few guys who feel that borrowing without intention to return intact is somehow punishable by lashing, I decided this would be a keen place to lie low.

I'm opening up registration for my class, "Fashion, Style, and all other things you need to know to be a Generally Hoopy Kid."

You lucky dogs.

I like to keep it wild and surprising, so there's not going to be a syllabus until the first day of class. This class is going to be a once a week deal, that goes down Thursdays at 4pm. Attendance is mandatory, unless you've got some hipper place to be.

Here are a few stipulations.

1. You must join the class with a partner. I can take 16 cats total, so that's eight pairs of partners.
2. You can't join with someone you know. Chat up a stranger, pair up in the comments, just get it done. Think of this as a way to sass out the hoopy from the tragically unhip.
3. Anyone who can float Principal Conner’s phone number my way gets…well, nothing, but it would definitely make you one heck of guy. Or girl. Or android.

EDIT: Registration will stay open until we have 8 pairs, or until the first class starts. Whichever comes first, you know?

Enrollment Again

*After inwardly debating with herself, she sighs and posts a notice.*

Enrollment in Biology, Geology, and Physics is open once again. If you were not able to get into one of the classes previously, or if you wish to take one now, please comment below and you will be added.

You are responsible for all required materials and the introductory lectures you have missed. Consult with your classmates and share notes if needed.

Each lab requires you have a partner, unless you are auditing. This is not optional.

Edit: Biology is closed! Sheesh..I'm going to have to do three separate field trips to the body farm at this rate.

Edit 2: Registration is closed! I'm going to find a bar and drink myself into a coma.

Edit 3: I don't care if you're late or not! CLOSED! *now off getting drunk*

Music Class Enrollment

Music Class Stuff (Syllabus)

Hey little dudes! My name is Ted 'Theodore' Logan and I'm gonna be your music teacher. Uh, I don't do mornings or Mondays, so here's, like, the time you need to show up. If you don't show up and the reason is a sugar hangover, I *totally* understand.

Music 101 - 12-2 Thursday
Band Practice - 2pm Thursday (and will probably go on late into the night, so show up whenever) Chronofluid (sounds like something Rufus would use. Excellent!)

MUSIC 101

Course Description: Uh, this is where I'll teach you all the different kinds of music, like rock and.. well, rock. We'll get a guest in, Professor Beethoven, to do the classical stuff. You'll have to speak up though, he's kinda hard of hearing. You'll also get to listen to some most triumphant recordings from the best bands of all time and you'll learn how to tell the difference between Van Halen, Iron Maiden and Megadeth. This class'll mostly be teaching you little dudes how music isn't just music. It's a lifestyle, dude.

Grade Evaluation: Grades suck, but [livejournal.com profile] principalconnor said they have to be used. So, uh, dudes, show up (or give me a good excuse for not showing up - you get bonus points for creativity and stuff I haven't heard before) and listen to music and learn and if you know all of the songs on at least one Van Halen album by the end of the class, you're totally getting an A.

Course Text: I'll give out some of my old music magazines in class and will tell you what articles are the most excellent.

Instructor: Ted 'Theodore' Logan

BAND PRACTICE

Course Description: Depending on how many people sign up, you little dudes will split up into groups and make your own band. If you don't know an instrument, that's cool, we can give you the triangle or something, or your band members can teach you how to play bass or something like that. It's not hard. If I can do it, anyone can!

Grade Evaluation: Uh, well, there's team work and then there'll be a Battle of the Bands at the end of the class. You don't have to win to get an A, but you'll get graded on how you perform. Oh, and only enrolled members of the class can perform. You can't bring in someone from outside, even if you did use time travel to get them.

Course Text: None, but if you have your own instrument you can bring it. If not there's plenty of excellent stuff in the music closet.

Instructor: Ted 'Theodore' Logan

Comment to enroll and party on, dudes!

Martial Arts Syllabus and Times

My name is Beatrix Kiddo, you may call me Beatrix or Professor Kiddo, I don't mind either. I'm going to be the martial arts instructor here, as I have a lot of experience in the field myself. I will be offering martial arts classes to those students interested, and I just wanted to see how many people were interested and to see what kinds of martial arts you would like to see. So please tell me here. If you want to learn basic self defense or something more advanced, let me know. This is just so I can begin to put together a lesson plan and figure out times for classes.

Thanks,

Beatrix Kiddo
