Baking Workshop 7/10, Monday Morning

Piper smiles at the students as they arrive. She kind of already fears for the home ec classroom. "Good morning everyone. I'm Piper, in case some of you don't already know that."

She points out a plate of brownies on the counter. "I usually make samples of the assignments I choose. Today is no exception. As you can see, you're going to bake brownies today."

She hands them each a list of ingredients and instructions. "I try to make the instructions as easy to follow as possible, but, if you ever have questions or need help with anything, please don't hesitate to ask."


Equipment Needed

bowl

8x8 baking pan

dish towel or oven mitt

spatula

mixing spoon

measuring cups

measuring spoons


Ingredients

6 Tablespoons Cocoa

1/4 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1/2 Teaspoon vanilla

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup flour

1 cup toasted pecans (optional)

2 eggs


Instructions

Melt 1/4 cups of butter in a microwaveable dish.

Measure 6 tablespoons of Cocoa powder into the mixing bowl.

Add melted butter and mix.

Add to Batter (1 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/3 cup flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt).

Mix batter.

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.

Flour the Pan (cover pan with butter, then add some flour to keep brownies from sticking)

Pour the brownie batter into the dish.

Put the brownies into the oven for 35-40 minutes.

Let them cool until slightly warm.

Cally was also gathering her ingredients. She was pretty good and following directions, so this wouldn't be too hard.

"Hey," she said, as she went about her gathering. "I fully apologize if I end up getting flour everywhere today... or any day, for that matter."

Bel decided to be a smart ass and melted the butter in his hand. Unfortunately, he melted the microwave safe bowl, too. Oops. Mmm, burning plastic.

Sam tilted his head a little as he glanced over between Bel and the bowl. "Call me crazy, but I'm not sure you're supposed to start the recipe out like that."

Molly looked over the instructions. She'd never actually baked anything before, but it was just measuring and mixing. It couldn't be that hard. Right?

The recipe seemed pretty basic. Which may have been why Angela didn't pay very much attention to it, melted too much butter, and ended up with a soupy batter.

She tilted the bowl and swirled it around, scrunching her nose. "So will butter evaporate?," she wondered aloud.

Sakurazaki definately recalled her last attempt to make brownies. The thought still made her stomach feel like lead. But these were very good instructions. She considers them thoughtfully, studiously, before she begins. It's difficult to concentrate, though, because all her thoughts are interspersed with questions of why did I think this was a good idea?

Luna had never baked before.

It was rare that she ventured inside of a kitchen not helmed by someone much more grown up than herself. Usually several someones.

This was going to be an adventure! She liked adventures!

Unfortunately, she also liked to stick the spatula behind her ear much she as did to the wand behind her other ear. This made for an interesting pattern of spots on her robe.

Isabel has a favorite brownie recipe (http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/detail.aspx?ID=28489) that she's made for years. She's interested in seeing if this recipe matches it.

Tempe arranged everything she needed in front of her before beginning the recipe. Having to run around to look for an ingredient would increase the potential that something would go wrong in the recipe.

With a precision possessed only by scientists, bakers, and incredibly OCD-type people, Tempe measured each ingredient carefully before adding it to the mixture, and tried to follow the recipe to the letter.

Molly's brownies wouldn't win any awards for presentation. She'd had to pry them out of the pan because she hadn't gotten the pan buttered and floured properly. But, aside from being a little hard around the edges, they were completely edible.

Alanna's brownies aren't really sure if they are brownies. They're kind of darker than you would expect and a bit crumbly. Also, someone chewing on one would find them to be a bit crunchy.

Sam looked like he was wearing more flour than had ended up in the pan with the brownies, so they looked a little burned and sticky on the edges. But they were edible, as far as he could tell. He was a little afraid to check.

Isabel's brownies turned out well and were tasty. But she missed the chocolate chips.
