Baking Workshop 7/10, Monday Morning

Piper smiles at the students as they arrive. She kind of already fears for the home ec classroom. "Good morning everyone. I'm Piper, in case some of you don't already know that."

She points out a plate of brownies on the counter. "I usually make samples of the assignments I choose. Today is no exception. As you can see, you're going to bake brownies today."

She hands them each a list of ingredients and instructions. "I try to make the instructions as easy to follow as possible, but, if you ever have questions or need help with anything, please don't hesitate to ask."

"Maybe only to a certain heat level?" Sam suggested. "Or for a certain amount of time. I stuck a plate in the microwave once for five minutes instead of 50 seconds, and it wasn't pretty."

Bel pried the hardening plastic off his hand and tossed it in the trash. "All right, I've made microwave popcorn before, melting butter can't be that hard," he said, measuring the butter again and putting it in the microwave. He completely guessed at the time needed and the butter ended up boiling over.

Sam, trying to avoid doing the same thing, was melting the butter slowly in the microwave. Like, ten second intervals slow.

Frustrated, Bel tried a third time, this time copying Sam. "This takes too long," he grumbled, however.

"Maybe," Sam replied. "But hopefully, we'll both end up with usable melted butter." He pulled the bowl out of the microwave and poked at the butter. It looked kind of melty, which was close enough, as far as he was concerned.

"You ever cooked before?" Bel said, peering at his own gooey mess zomg not dirty.

"Not really, no," Sam admitted, trying to measure everything else he needed. "My dad cooks when he's around, and Dean takes care of it when he isn't. How about you?"
demonbelthazor: (Headtilt)

Bel's measurements may not have been so precise. Ballpark, yeah, but not precise. "No," Bel said. "Well, other than just flat out roasting something in a fire. It's all the extra ingredients and measuring that I don't get."

"Me neither. I think the best rule of thumb is that if the food takes more time to prepare and cook than it'll actually take to eat it, it's a waste of time."

"Tell that to Piper and she'll blow you up," Bel said with a grin.

"And put me in the snickerdoodles?" Sam smirked. "I've heard stories."

"Don't let her hear you say that, or she'll really blow you up," Bel snickered. "Watch out for her Hands of Discontent."
likethegun: (i'm questioning your seriousness)

"Hands of Discontent? That sounds like the kind of thing that a teacher might not be allowed to use on a student unless you're into that sort of thing."

Bel grinned. "True enough. But still, not wise to piss off a teacher who's a witch."

He took a stick of butter and started buttering the brownie pan, then tossed a handful of flour into it, creating a small white dust cloud.
