Writing Workshop - 5/23 - Journalism Classroom - Tuesday Morning

Chloe greeted each of the students as they followed the handwavied instructions and came into the Journalism classroom. Anyone who had been in here during the last semester might notice that all traces of Rita had been removed; the room had definitely become Chloe's domain.

"Good morning," she said brightly, distributing a syllabus to everyone. "Welcome to the writing workshop. For anyone I haven't met extensively yet, I'm Chloe Sullivan. Please, please call me Chloe, because any of that 'Ms. Sullivan' stuff is just going to remind me that I'm old and I have to leave this place at the end of the summer."


She gave everyone a smile and turned around to address them fully. "So, the basic idea of this workshop is to give you all a chance to experiment with different writing styles that are out there. We're going to start with non-fictional styles, and then move into some of the more entertaining fictional forms. I will warn you, I'm probably going to be doing some heavy pimping of the school newspaper, because it's kind of my baby, and it needs good people to take care of it next year. Those of you who were my minions part of the staff should know what I can get like." Chloe smirked.

"I figured the best way to start would be to talk about writing biographies," Chloe said, outlining a few of the characteristics of this style on the board. "This is also my sneaky way of making you all talk to each other on the first day. I've assigned each of you into a pair, and what I want you to do is get together with your partner, talk a little bit about yourselves, and then give me a minimum of 50 words on what you learned."

After not managing to get out of the course, Cameron grabbed a chair and sat down beside Marie. "Yo, I see you've survived Fandom so far."

"Yes, I have. And I found out that all the stuff you told me the first day was true, so I probably owe you an apology for thinking you were crazy," Marie said with a smile. "How've you been?"

"Don't worry about it," Cameron waved it off. "I've been good. Went to visit my folks for a couple of days and now I'm back to follow all the wrong workshops."

"Ah, so that's why I haven't seen you around lately," Marie said. "Did you have a nice visit? And what do you mean by wrong workshops?"

"That and the dorms have been crazy with so many newbies, I've gone into hiding," he grinned. "But it was good. And I'm not sure what's up with the workshops, I never signed up for this or photography and yet I somehow ended up in them. I think it might be a conspiracy."

Never underestimate the power of the snarky blondes. "That's odd. Are they your only two workshops?" Marie asked.

"No, at least my sign ups for Flight and Wilderness Survival didn't get messed with," he shook his head and looked at their assignment. "I'll survive. So let's talk about you."

Kawalsky shifted his chair over to Rory who I am modding omg, because she's Rory and she always shows up.

She shook her head. "And I need to stop thinking as a journalist, since this isn't an interview, really. Um. You can go first. Where are you from, what's your family like, what do you like about Fandom, blah blah?"

"Okay," Kawalsky replied, thinking of where to start. "I was born in New York, moved around a lot because my Dad was in the Air Force. My Dad died a few years ago now and I'm not allowed to see my mom or sister because they think I'm dead, but as far as I know they're both okay where they are. I like the people in Fandom. Met a lot of cool people since I got here, you included. It's nice to have some friends whose lives are more normal than yours and some whose lives are weirder, y'know? Anything else?"

Janet took a seat, pulled out her notebook, and looked around for Alanna.

Janet covered her mouth as she yawned. Stupid reflex. "Why did we take a morning workshop?" she asked.

"Telling each other our life's stories," said Janet. "Which is something I'm not generally capable of at this hour." She offered Alanna a chocolate-covered espresso bean.

Alanna happily munched on it. "Thank you! Let's see, life story. Born in a northern fiefdom in Tortall to Lord Alan of Trebond and his lovely wife Lady Thomasia. Mum died after she gave birth to Thom, my twin. Was raised by my nurse and a man-at-arms. Switched places with Thom at age ten. Have lived in the capital of Chorus since then. Oh, and Father dearest died a few years ago. You?"

"Sounds easy to write up," said Janet. "I grew up all over the place. My father was in the military. My parents died in a car accident a while ago. My uncle is my legal guardian. I like biology and plan to become a doctor some day." She grinned. "Is that enough?"
