Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

And Rory was there after getting some sleep and taking a real shower, figuring that hiding out in her room was the least productive thing she could do.

She glanced around at the new kids as she grabbed a cup of coffee, a small smile playing on her lips.

Cedric might be trying to escape the crowd just a bit and he might accidentally bump into Rory's shoulder.

"Excuse me. I'm very sorry."

"Oh, totally okay," Rory said, looking down to make sure she didn't trip. She barely had time to note the accent before looking up and immediately blushing. "Oh. Oh. Um. Hi."

"There's a lot of people around and I didn't see where I was going," he explains. "Hello. New student?"

"Nope. Old student. I'm Rory," she said, finally remembering her manners and offering a hand.

"You don't look so old to me," Cedric says, taking the offered hand. "Good to meet you, Rory. I'm Cedric."

"Where are you from, Cedric?" Rory asked, totally trying not to stare too much. "England?"

"Yes." Cedric smiles, dropping his bag near his feet. "People seem to have an easy time guessing where I'm from."

"It's the accent," Rory said helpfully. You know, in case Cedric hadn't picked up on this development. "Um, what brings you to Fandom?"

Sam had gone back to wandering through the crowd, looking at everyone a little shyly, and possibly checking for anyone else who looked like Dean.

No, that wasn't his name. But everyone learns to answer to their brother's name at some point. So he turned around.

"Um, yes?"

"Hey!" Rory said, grinning and walking over to give him a hug. "How come you didn't say anything about coming here when I saw you?"

Ooh, a girl hug. This was nice. Really really nice. And it made Sam have to pause awkwardly as he tried to understand what the girl was saying.

"Um, I uh, I don't know if we...I mean I thought you were talking to...someone else and uh, I..." he stammered wildly. "Did you call me Dean?" he finally said.

"...well, yeah, we never did the whole pet name thing and that would be kind of weird now, don't you think?" Rory said, raising a brow.

"Oh god," Sam said, backing away a little and looking around quickly to see if there was another version of him running around here somewhere. "I'm sorry, I think you've made a mistake. I'm Sam. My brother's name is Dean," he tried to explain.

Rory blushed.

Hard.

"Um. You look exactly like this guy I know - my ex-boyfriend," she explained. "Dean Forrester."

Sadly, though, Rory's voice was so soft that it's quite likely that Sam might have only heard "Dean ...ster."

"Hey, you. What do you think of the new battalion of zombie-fodder?" Parker might be having too much fun sizing up the crowd of newbies.

"They're...interesting. Lots of cute guys," Rory said. "Summer term will be easy on the eyes."

"That's for sure," Parker said, checking out a couple of the guys appreciatively, even if they look a little young for her taste. "Next dance, we won't have to worry about the girl-boy ratio again. Yay!"

"Though of course we're losing some of them," Rory noted quietly. She slanted a glance at Parker. "Anakin went home this morning."

Parker cocked an eyebrow, then looked concerned. "Permanently? I thought he wanted to stay this summer."

"We don't know. He has to make his case before the Council and stuff," Rory said, shrugging. "He said to tell you he says goodbye."

"He only left this morning. And last night was...fun. I'll miss him, but he's coming back," she replied almost confidently.
