Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

"Yes." Cedric smiles, dropping his bag near his feet. "People seem to have an easy time guessing where I'm from."

"It's the accent," Rory said helpfully. You know, in case Cedric hadn't picked up on this development. "Um, what brings you to Fandom?"

"The accent?" He smirks. "I hadn't noticed," he says coyly.

"Transferred from my other school," Cedric supplies. "Reasons aren't really known to me but I suspect I'll find out as the summer progresses.

"Always fun," Rory said, grinning like a dork. "What year are you, then? I'm going to be a senior in the fall."

"Second year. Sophomore, I believe. I'm not entirely familiar with this way of sorting students," he relpies.

"Oh, so I'm two years ahead of you," she replied, biting her lip. "Huh. Are you just staying for camp? Or sticking around through fall, too?"

"I'm honestly not sure," he responds. "I was transferred quite suddenly without a lot of explanation so, for all I know, I could be here for just the summer or through the fall. Two years ahead of me would make you a fourth year?"

"We call it a senior, but yeah," she said, nodding. "Um. So...what do you do for fun?"

Yes, she was making small talk.

Yes, it was because he was cute.

Look, her boyfriend had left this morning for God knows how long. Let the girl enjoy her eye candy.

"Sports," Cedric answers. "That makes me sound quite dull, doesn't it? I lik sports and that's it. I'm honestly not that dull, I promise."

Rory shrugged. "I'm a bit of a bookworm and really bad at sports, so I guess I'm more dull."

"Perhaps you just haven't found the right sport?"

Rory giggled.

"Well, I fence? But not particularly well. I'm kind of clumsy."

"I think you're being too hard on yourself, Rory." He smiles at her again. "Sometimes clumsiness is an asset. Fall right into something good, you know."

"Um," she said eloquently. "No, I'm really, really clumsy. Really. My mom says it's because my legs are too long."

Of course, that only draws Cedric's attention to her legs.

"They look perfectly normal to me."

Rory shuffled her feet.

"So...how old are you, anyway? If you're a sophomore, you've got to be like...fifteen?"

"Sixteen," he corrects. "And yourself?"

"Seventeen. Eighteen in October," she replied shyly. "So I'm like, way old."

"I don't think you're old at all," Cedric replies, shaking his head. "Old is my father's age. Old is grey hair and wrinkles. You're young and I see no sign of grey hair anywhere."

"It's because of the coffee addiction," she babbled. "Keeps me young-looking. Really."

"If you insist." He ducks down so he can see her face and smiles again. "Although, I do think you're wrong. You're not old."

Rory blushed some more. "You are very tall," she noted. Helpfully.

"Is that a bad thing?" Cedric asks. "I can kneel down if you're getting a crick in your neck."

"No, no I like tall boys."

Oh God. Worst thing ever to say.

"I mean, um, I'm used to them. My best friend is a really tall guy. And so is my ex. So yes. Used to it. And it's not like I'm tiny. Really."

He smiles and runs a hand through his hair.

"Glad to hear that. Would've been dreadful if we couldn't be friends due to my height. And no, you're not tiny. Not at all."
