Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Dawn went up to the food table and returned with what other people might consider an odd assortment, not that she did.

Pizza with pineapple and anchovies was perfectly normal, thank you very much.

"Hey there, new person," Molly said, walking up to her. "I'm Molly. Welcome to Fandom High."

Dawn swallowed her mouthful. "Hi, Molly. I'm Dawn. Nice to meet you. I like your hat."

Molly grinned. "Nice to meet you too, Dawn. And thank you. About the hat. I'm kind of know for them. If you ever forget my name, just mention 'the girl with the hats' and people will pretty much know you're talking about me." She grinned again.

"So, where are you from? How old are you? What year are you in? Are you just here for the summer? Do you know who your roommate is yet?"

Dawn laughed. "Wow, you're just as rambly as I am. Cool!"

"Um, I'm from Sunnydale, CA, which is a little town that fell into a huge sinkhole no one's ever heard of. I'm sixteen, I'll be a junior, I'm not sure about whether I'm staying on or not yet, and I'm rooming with him," she said, inhaling deeply as she pointed in Sam's general direction. "You've been here a while, right? The rooming assignments? They're not a misprint or a hallucination or anything like that?"

Molly turned to see where Dawn was pointing. "Whoa. The tall one? I either pity you or envy you. And no, no mistakes. Guys and girls room together. I haven't heard of anyone having an issue with it though," she said with a grin when she turned back to Dawn.

Considering Isabel was dousing her food (including the cookies) with tabasco, she really can't comment on anyone's eating habits.

"Hi, Isabel. I'm Dawn. Ooh, tabasco." She reached for the bottle, then pulled her hand back, "Do you mind?"

"I'm always happy to share the spiciness," she said as she held out the bottle. "I'm glad to meet a fellow fan. Most people around here think I'm nuts."

Dawn took the bottle, and added a couple of drops to the piece of pizza, concentrating particularly on hitting the pineapple.

"Then we can be nuts together," she grinned, "but I am the originator of the peanut butter and banana quesadilla, so you may not want to be seen with me. Or, y'know, eat it. Not one of my better experiments," she mused.

Isabel noticed her preferred targets, "Sweet and spicy isn't that the best combination?" She laughed, "the peanut butter and banana part sounds okay. But quesdilla? Doesn't that imply cheese as well? And heat?"

"As for being nuts, we have a lot of company. Trust me."

Shawn decided that taking himself off to find people to talk to himself was probably a better plan than waiting around for people to come talk to him. The cute girl with the odd food choices seemed a good place to start.

"Hi, you mind sharing a table?"

Dawn looked up. "No, not at all." She licked some sauce of her thumb, then waved. "Hi, I'm Dawn. Are you new?"

Shawn smiled and sat down opposite. "Yeah, arrived not half an hour ago, and already totally confused. I'm Shawn."

"Just got in from Seattle, when I decided I wanted to be away for the summer, I took it literally." He smiled, "about as far away as I could get without leaving the continent. How about you? Travelled far to get here?"

"Isn't it?" Dawn grinned at him. "I was so excited they had one. I'm Dawn Summers, by the way."

"Jamie Madrox," he replied returning the grin. "My buddy Guido usually has something like that when he hosts poker night. I think it's mostly to distract that he's such a bad card player. You new around here too?"

"Room 507," Jamie said reading off his packet of information. "You wouldn't have happened to run into a 'N. Santos', have you? And I'll have to say that Anchovies and I don't get along to well."

"I'm sorry, but a world of no." Faithful on the other hand? Pointed at an anchovy and meowed politely. Alanna ingored him. "I'm Alanna by the way."

"Hi, Alanna," Dawn said, pulling an anchovy off the pizza after noticing Faithful's gesture. "I'm Dawn. Okay if I give your cat a fish? No bones in them."
