Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Not when it's three in the morning and he's hungry." Faithful hit her on the head with his paw. Alanna stuck her tongue out at him. Faithful returned the gesture. "At least you have the right attitude! Because I'm one of the relatively more normal students here." She paused. "Kind of."

"Kind of?" Dawn looked Alanna over. "How come only kind of?"

"If you consider a girl who's disguised as a boy back in her home world who also can cast spells and is training to be a knight and has purple eyes and a talking cat normal, then yes, she is. Can I have another anchovie?" That would be Faithful. Alanna groaned. "Actually, that does make me normal by Fandom standards."

Dawn handed Faithful another anchovy, then scritched him behind the ears as her curiosity got the better of her. "You can cast spells? What kind? What system do you use? What do you have to do to train to be a knight? Did you give up your sword, or did they let you keep it to train? They made me give up my axe." She may have may sounded a little bitter about that.

Okay, the purple eyes and talking cat were a little unusual, but it wasn't like Alanna was the first spellcaster she'd met. "Why do you have to pretend to be a boy?"

Alanna smiled and turned to her cat and politely expressed everything she was thinking about him right now. In French with a few choice Japanese words thrown in. Then she turned back to Dawn. "Um...System? I'm Gifted and just use that to cast spells. I can do a bit of thread magic as well. Um, what else? Oh, only boys can train for their shield at home, so my twin and I switched places. I got to keep Lightning because other wise things would be bad. Did I get everything?"

Dawn grinned a bit as she listened to Alanna express herself at Faithful. "Okay, that boys only training thing? Bites hardcore. I see why you switched. Is it weird for you, being able to be a girl again?"

Alanna rolled her eyes. "Yeah, a bit. Not to mention that there is also the culture shock from coming from the equivolent of your 14th century or so. But I've been here about nine months and haven't killed anyone yet!"

"is that an accomplishment, or have you been slacking?" Dawn asked, smiling slightly.

"My friends back home don't believe me." Alanna admitted. "And I've never been in detention, which causes them to completely break down laughing." She pondered this for a minute.

"Why?" She drank some soda, realizing as she did so that Alanna hadn't answered her question. "Did you get in trouble a lot back home?"

"Just a little! And it's not always my fault!" Alanna grabbed a sode for herself as well.

Alanna considered this. "Was kidnapped once. Got into a fight every single day for almost a year."

"You should really meet my sister," Dawn grinned. "She held the record at Sunnydale High for most fights."

"I like her." Alanna replied quickly. "Were they all with just cause?"
