Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Just got in from Seattle, when I decided I wanted to be away for the summer, I took it literally." He smiled, "about as far away as I could get without leaving the continent. How about you? Travelled far to get here?"

Dawn glanced over at Xander, then at Willow. "Maybe farther than I think, though I'm most recently from California. Yay, West Coast!"

Shawn chuckled, "I get the feeling there are people who've come even further than us. I met a guy earlier, he came here all the way from England." He kept quiet about the whole, 'over sixty years ago' part. He'd learned a while ago that saying things like that never went down well.

He followed her gaze. "You know them?"

"Maybe?" Dawn tried to do the calculations in her head. "I think that it's more like I will know them. Soon. Ish."

Blinking Shawn almost decided he didn't want to know. Curiousity got the better of him however. "Uh, how does that work?"

Dawn grabbed her soda in preparation for when Shawn ran screaming from the table, "I think they're younger versions of people I'll meet in a year or two. Maybe. Or they're evil alien robot clones and will try to kill us in our sleep."

"Er, not that that ever happens."

This place, was definitely not normal. Shawn didn't really know how he was supposed to respond to that so instead he supplied, "I met a guy ten minutes ago who said he was from 1940. I'm starting to think, there is something a litte weird about this place."

"1940? Really?" Wow, older than Giles. She grinned. "And yeah, kind of a high weirdness quotient, but it makes it feel more like home. Sorta. What about you? What do you like to do, when you're not meeting old people?"

"He wasn't old," Shawn blurted. Then realised that maybe he shouldn't have mentioned that, but he really couldn't stop there. "He is uh, our age... is your home that weird?"

"Huh." Dawn took another bite of pizza, then shrugged. "Yeah, I guess so. I mean, it's not so weird to me anymore, but I can't imagine a place without some of the stuff it's got."

"Maybe a little," Dawn replied, "but not as much as it probably should. My life's been kind of strange up to this point."

Starting with the fact that she was technically four.

"Until pretty recently, so was mine.. normal that is." Shawn decided he wasn't really lying, it totally depended on what she counted as recently, and it seemed her definition of normal was pretty liberal too.

"So, what exactly makes your life weirder than the average?" He couldn't help but be curious, and he wanted to take the attention off his life anyway.
