Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Jack strolled around the edge of the crowd, standard smile firmly in place, wondering which of these people he might actually know. Or who might know him.

Since he had no idea when he'd last eaten, he headed towards the food table, intent on snagging something and watching from the sidelines until he figured this out.

As he slid through the people, he couldn't help but grin: he didn't think he'd ever seen so many pretty people in one place. Maybe this would turn out to be all right after all.

"Hey Jack!" Pippi waved to him. "I don't think I've seen you round since your birthday. What'cha been up to?"

Okay, someone who knew him. He flashed her a grin. "Yeah, I've been away, but hey - back now. Looking forward to making up for lost time."

"How're you doing?"

"I'm doing well." she said, "Very pleased it's summer vacation. I hope we can hang out more, you seem like a lot of fun... Just don't have any more parties at the Arms okay?"

She laughed and punched him (lightly, gently) in the arm.

Summer vacation, huh? He filed the information away. He had no idea what she was talking about with the party stuff, but grinned back at her. "Yeah, that's always good advice." Never one to miss an opportunity, he winked at her. "Any time you care to grace me with your company, I'll be more than willing."

"Jack!" Elizabeth exclaimed gleefully. Thankfully she wasn't holding anything at the time as she hugged him. "Where have you been? It's been ages! Are you okay?"

"Hey!" Jack returned her hug enthusiastically. "Me? I'm a hell of a lot better now. If this is going to be my reception, I'm gonna go away more often." Arms around her waist, he leaned back to look at her, having absolutely no idea who she was. "What about you, what have you been up to?"

"Next time you might want to tell us you're disappearing into parts unknown," Elizabeth said, nudging him slightly. She pulled away, grinning. "End of classes, planning for summer vacation. Was six for the weekend before last; that was an experience." Her smile faded slightly. "You missed CJ leaving."

"Ah, you know me, got to cultivate an air of mystery." He flashed her another grin. "Sounds like I missed some fun times."

"CJ left?" Jack might have fidgted slightly, as if he wasn't quite sure how to react to that. "I tried to call her and the number was disconnected. She was okay, though?"

She looked at him critically, before shaking her head and grinning. "I can't see you at six," she said. "Or any indeterminate age from three to nine really. But yeah. Fun. And now you're back, and it's summer and they'll hopefully be more fun."

Elizabeth nodded. "Yeah, fine. She's gone back to DC; staying with, ah, Carol, I think? Someone she knew from her White House days." She sighed. "It's odd without her."

"Jack!" Janet grinned and walked over to him. "You're back! Where the heck have you been? I haven't seen you since Monopoly night, and that was ages ago."

"Ah, it's so nice to be missed!" His grin was getting a work out today. "I've been about. So many things to do, people to see." He resisted the temptation to reverse those, but his grin might have become more of a smirk. Just a bit.

"But how have you been? Did you get turned into a kid? Cause that sounds pretty," Jack wanted to say: insane, freaky, downright bizarre, but he went with, "interesting."

"Of course you were missed." Well. He certainly had the charm on full-force today. "Just 'about?' Come on, this is Fandom. Were you kidnapped by aliens?"

"Embarrassing is more like it," groaned Janet. "And yes, I was wee and adorable. And a brat. Be thankful you missed out on that one."

He shrugged. "Well, I wouldn't exactly call it kidnapped..." He waved his hand around vaguely.

"I bet you were utterly adorable, but yeah, I'm glad I missed it. Being reduced to a kid again is not my idea of fun."

Janet nodded. "But aliens were involved? Because really, it could be anything around this place."

"It was fun at the time," said Janet. "But in retrospect, I think fingerpainting Dr. Jackson's walls was a very bad move."

Parker spotted Jack through the throng, and buzzed over to him, high heels clicking like sledgehammers. "Jack Harkness, you incredible disappearing jerk, what do you mean just leaving me a phone message like that? Aghhh!"

Phone message. His brain clicked over, combined that with dangerous if riled, and came to the only logical conclusion. "Parker?"

"Don't 'Parker' me in that innocent tone, you doofus! You disappear for six weeks, don't return phone messages, then come back with 'hi, I'm back'? Gah!" She thwapped at his arm, then smiled, still furious, but so damn relieved the smile escaped. "I thought Locker 327 ate you!"

Jack ducked away from her with a laugh, but it's quite possible it was a bit strained around the edges. Scratching his head, the very picture of innocence, he looked up at her through his lashes. "Sorry?"

How did he say: And by the way, it wasn't my fault, and I don't remember you, and help? He settled on, "I promise to explain if you promise not to hurt me," flashing her a grin.

"Grrrr. You damn well better." Parker relaxed a little, looking him over, and said, "You don't look like you're bleeding, or have been recently. Is there anyone I have to help beat up, or was this just one of those Fandom things?"

From across the room, she couldn't take her eyes off him but was in no way going to crush on anyone this soon after saying goodbye to Emmett.

No way.

Ok, maybe a little way...that guy was cute.

She looked down into her bag and Bruiser looked back up at her with a doggie look of 'you have got to be kidding.'

"What? I just want to say hi." she said as she looked back up and smiled at cute-boy-who-wasn't-Emmett.

Jack glanced up and saw a very, very cute girl staring at him. He flashed her a grin, tilting his head to the side in question and raising an eyebrow in invitation.

That was all the invite she needed. She patted Bruiser on the head and walked confidently across the room until she was within arms reach. Thrusting her hand forward, she tossed her hair over her shoulder and smiled. "Hi! I'm Elle!" she exclaimed.

Jack smiled slowly, and reached for her hand, drawing it up and pressing a kiss to the back of it. "Jack Harkness at your service." He was still holding it when he asked, "And who's your friend?"
