Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

"Ah, you know me, got to cultivate an air of mystery." He flashed her another grin. "Sounds like I missed some fun times."

"CJ left?" Jack might have fidgted slightly, as if he wasn't quite sure how to react to that. "I tried to call her and the number was disconnected. She was okay, though?"

She looked at him critically, before shaking her head and grinning. "I can't see you at six," she said. "Or any indeterminate age from three to nine really. But yeah. Fun. And now you're back, and it's summer and they'll hopefully be more fun."

Elizabeth nodded. "Yeah, fine. She's gone back to DC; staying with, ah, Carol, I think? Someone she knew from her White House days." She sighed. "It's odd without her."

"I'm glad she's okay." He may have fidgeted again. "I'll get in contact with her in DC."

In a much lighter tone, Jack said, "But I definitely picked the right time to come back." He reached out, as if to tap her gently on the nose. "And I'll have you know I was very cute when I was six. And three. And nine." Eyes twinkling, he added. "Not as cute as I am now, but still cute."

"She's good," Elizabeth said in a reassuring voice. "And she'd love to hear from you, you know that."

She laughed. "I'm sure you were," she said. "You were the one probably trying to look under the girls' skirts at recess as well."

Jack attempted to look innocent and failed miserably. "If it's any consolation, it wasn't just the girls." With a wicked smile, he added, "Kilts were a marvellous invention."

Elizabeth giggled, shaking her head. "Of course. An equal opportunist, even at that age, huh?"

"Always. Why cut yourself off from half the population?"

Elizabeth nodded. "That is a very good point to argue," she said.

Almost gleefully, Jack nodded at the milling crowd, "And there's so much pretty here, on both sides. How could you possibly ever choose?"

He tilted his head sideways, and cocked an eyebrow. "Present company a perfect example, I might add."

"I'm sure you'll find a way to," Elizabeth remarked dryly, grinning.

She ducked her head and blushed slightly.

"Do I have to?" he replied wistfully.

Jack's smile may have gotten wider when she blushed, but just a little. He wouldn't want to make her uncomfortable, but it was quite cute.

Elizabeth giggled. "I think you'd have better luck if you did. Try leaving the ones who are involved with other people out to start with," she said, trying to keep a serious face.

"Spoil all my fun..." he said grumpily, smiling to show he wasn't serious. "No, no you're right. I shall take your excellent advice on board. But seeing as I've been away, you might have to point the taken ones out to me."

Elizabeth pointed a finger at herself first, tilting her head and smiling slightly apologetically at him.

She then looked out at all the people. "Okay, who's out there?"

"You're taken?" With an exaggerated sigh, Jack clasped his hands to his heart. "Ah, I'm wounded. However will I survive?"

Grinning boyishly at her, he let his hands fall to his sides. "Not surprising. Disappointing, but not surprising. Okay, give me the rundown, if you've got the time."

Elizabeth glanced at him curiously. Did he forget the macho posturing Charlie had adopted last time they were all in a room together? Not that she was still with Charlie, but that was another thing.

She forced a grin. "I'm sure you'll manage," she said, before looking for familiar faces. "Okay, first of all, Janet is. Who else can I see? Xander, Marty, Phoebe and Parker all are here and all are."

Nodding at each name, Jack followed her gaze, having absolutely no idea which of the many people in the crowd she was referring to. He was going to have to extricate himself from this before she figured out he had no clue.

He didn't think it would take long; something he'd already said hadn't been quite right, but he had no idea what. "Suddenly I feel like I'm cheating." He glanced at her. "Where's the challenge if you just tell me?"

Rubbing his hands together in anticipation, he said, "Much more fun to work it out on my own."

Elizabeth snickered slightly. "You do that," she said. "I've warned you off the most important one at least." She winked at him.

"For which you will be remembered most fondly." He grinned at her. "The lure of the unknown beckons me. Wish me luck?"

She laughed again. "Good luck! I'll catch you later."
