Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

As the day went on, the humidity didn't get much better, but the fall decorations seemed to be holding out. If some of the apples and pumpkins disappeared... well, the wildlife deserved to have a festive day too, right?

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nina had... not... gotten a lot of sleep last night but, like, because the shrimp had swayed her into not doing what she'd been considering this time, she'd gotten some!

She had also done away with the Cup Noodle dress and was now looking sweet and innocent as could be as she looked around to see who there was to see.

It was was the dawn of her final year here, after all, so she wouldn't miss this for the world!

Whenever one of these days came around, Tisarwat always felt a little left out, no longer bieng a student and not being a teacher, either, to the point where she almost wondered if she should follow in the footsteps of some of her former classmates and pick up a faculty position after all. But what would she even teach? AI Uprisings? How to Handle Tyrants Hijacking your Brain? Proper Tea Brewing and Why It Matters?

...actually, that last one might not be too bad. Either way, Tisarwat was trying to be more social around here, anyway, so to the picnic it was, where she would try her best to ignore people eating with their hands and be grateful for her tea flask.

Seivarden had brought her own. She hadn't talked to her fellow lieutenant in a while, so a brief conversation might be in order.

Perhaps, they could at least agree that a class on tea would be useful?

Sometimes old habits resurfaced. Octavia had been out for a walk, with half a plan for visiting the preserve for a while, but then she'd spotted the whole thing outside the school, and...

Here she was, pocketing a few things from the food tables.

She wouldn't stay long.

Astrid found herself both relieved and a little disappointed not to have a little sibling this time around; she generally felt she wasn't very good at it, anyway, but it was always interesting to try. That did mean the pressure of confusing or traumatising some hapless classmate was off her shoulders, though, so she was mostly going to grab a few things she could nibble on while staking out her usual claim underneath a tree off to the side, keeping an eye out for any new faces that might be particularly interesting to draw and revisiting some of her old favorites.

At some point Stark made his way over to the food and filled a plate. He was confused about what was happening with the classes but that didn't mean he wasn't hungry. And hanging out outside at the picnic would keep him occupied for a good portion of the day which was almost always a good thing.

Troy had approached the picnic tables with every intention of loading up his plate with as much food as he possibly could, but that was before....

"Whoa!"

Shocked by his own luck, Troy reached forward to pull something from the table, that something being a very large cookie, practically the size of a wheel.

"I can't believe nobody's taken this cookie!"

There was a good chance it was supposed to be reserved for someone size-appropriate to such a giant cookie, like that shark guy or something, but Troy was going to see if he could get away with claiming it for himself, and would now be toting it around almost proudly, nibbling at it in intervals and thinking that there was no way this could possibly turn out badly for him.

Irene wasn't teaching this semester, but she was familiar enough with the picnic practice to know that this was a wonderful way to meet new people and to socialize a bit.

And frankly, it was too damned hot to exist regardless of whether she was indoors or not, so she might as well exist outside where the people were.

She found herself somewhere to sit with a tall, cool drink, taking a moment to double-checking her updo (flawless) and her Hervé Léger sheath dress (also flawless) in a compact for any evidence of the humidity on her person before she took a seat.

Free food? Check. People? Check. Sunshine? A firm check.

Faye might have been in something of a shitty mood the last week or so (not to put too fine a point on it), but the welcome picnic was still a draw she wasn't going to resist, and frankly, it kind of helped. She'd been out of sorts since last weekend, sure, but free food and open air would help her shake it off, right?

Or at least act like she shook it off, anyway. So cue Faye loading up her plate with as much food as she could actually carry before taking it over to a picnic table.

She didn't have the pockets to take stuff home with her, but she'd probably just carry more off later, anyway.

Sakaki had spent maybe the last hour or so in her room, in front of a mirror and an audience of all her stuffed animals, trying to pump herself up to be more social at this picnic, and more social with her classmates in general, that she was going to make some actual friends and participate in more things, and...and...and...

...and then she actually got down to the picnic, found a big lump in her throat, and, despite all the pep talks and encouragement from her stuffed animals, she...mostly just got some food and found a table out of the way to sit down and mostly just ended up people-watching.

Occasionally, a thought of inspiration to get up and say something to someone would pop up, but it didn't really stay for long, skittering off just as she was about to actually pursue it.

She'd get there! Sometimes it just took some baby steps...

At least this place was better than a monastery. He kept telling himself that whenever there was a pang of homesickness.

You know what sucked worse than being trapped on an island straight outta that Mooby flick about the guy with the back hump? Watching other people walking straight across that causeway like they didn’t have a care in the world. Margo hated them for it on principle. But she could multitask: hate people, follow ‘em to wherever the hell they were going.

Which was. . . a picnic.

“I swear this better be a real shitty dream or one of Josh’s latest batch of brownies screwing with me,” she said. You could get far paving over your panic with bitterness and a twinge of irony, she knew that much. And joining them, obviously, if you couldn’t beat them right now.

She sat down in her new purple dress, long and with some shimmer. The eye patch didn’t match: spelling cash out of an ATM was a lot easier than getting someone on Etsy to hurry the hell up shipping their homemade junk. “Wait, is that carpaccio over there?”

Okay, fine, Queen Margo was also just hungry.

Seivarden had no particular reason to be here. The food was likely going to be finger food, it was going to be hard to avoid seeing people eat it, and she had brought her own tea just to be on the safe side.

If someone asked she was going to say she had nothing better to do (which wasn't entirely untrue), but to herself she could admit that she was hoping someone Radchaai would show up. One that wasn't Tisarwat, and preferably one she actually liked.

After visiting Diego at the trooper station, Annie hadn't really wanted to go right back home -- she had all this free time since she'd called off work with a family emergency (which was kind of feeling more and more...like maybe she'd presumed too much calling it that when she'd told Ashley why she'd be gone a few days? But whatever. Things were just kind of temporarily hard. Not about her. She could deal.)

And okay, even if she wasn't teaching, free food and mingling was something she could always get down with, so Annie found herself a spot to plunk under a tree with a snack, mostly people-watching though she was also keeping an eye on her phone. Just in case.

This was Harry's first time on this side of the picnic, and he felt like he should have certain people with him for something like this. It was interesting to watch, though, and compare it to what he was used to.

And to get a plate of food and hang out at a table to watch, because teenage boy.

So Jo was from England and was discovering that she did not like the heat at all.

She was definitely making sure she was having water and helping herself to some food as she found a place in the shade to stay.

Sitting on one of the tables was a plush toy cat, with a red cape and little gold crown.

He was drinking out of a red solo cup that was absolutely filled with alcohol.

Goose helped himself to a plate of food and looked around the picnic, he definitely didn’t think he’d be back for one of these.

Rey's reason for being here was mainly the free food, along with having time after training. She found a spot under a tree where she'd be mostly unnoticed, with a plate and watching.

Alara was already missing the moderate climate of Xelaya as she helped herself to some food and water and decided to wander around the picnic.

Right, then. So far, there really didn't seem to be a whole lot of difference between the First World and back home. Except for being held outdoors, this picnic reminded her a lot of the welcome party at Alfea.

(Which she'd never actually participated in, mind, though she did have vague memories of being cooed over by some of the students as a toddler.)

The fact that it was being held outdoors meant she'd found herself a nice shady spot to enjoy her plate of snacks. Had that shady spot been quite as shady before Terra had sat down? Hard to say.
